Head of School Exams results to be proud of...

‘If you don’t want to pay, pray or sit an entrance exam, the first non-faith, non-selective school in the regional rankings is Cheadle Hulme High School’ - Alastair McCall, Sunday Times Parent Power Schools Guide 2019.

We also feature alongside many of the top independent schools in the newspaper’s other guides. In a recent feature on Stand Out Schools in Science and Engineering they wrote: “There’s a massive push on extra- curricular here (CHHS), with a whopping 18 science clubs, as well as house competitions and students even put on ‘flash and bang’ shows for younger students in primary schools.”

In 2019 GCSE results saw 67% of students achieve the gold standard of 9-5 in English and maths, meaning CHHS is one of the most sought after schools in Greater .

Last year, one in five of all A-Level students gained three or more straight A*/As. We also saw seven students achieve straight A*s.

In 2020 70% of our Year 13 students progressed to study at one of the top 30 most selective universities.

In the 2019 Progress 8 Headline measure CHHS came in the top 3% of schools nationally with a figure of +0.75.

‘Results that would make any school, state or independent, proud.’ - Alastair McCall.

The combination of academic success and wider opportunities resulted in Cheadle Hulme High School being named Secondary School of the Year in 2018, an achievement which reflects the commitment and hard work of our school community.

At the heart of our drive for excellent results is our firm belief that for many years there hasn’t been a level playing field for students who are educated in the state sector. As Cheadle Hulme High School shows, that ‘norm’ can be challenged. Extracurricular, Clubs & Careers

A focus on extracurricular activities is vital for building a love for learning. That is why we are proud of how our students excel on the stage, on the sportsfield and in our clubs and societies.

Each year, students from Years 7 to 13 work together to perform or play in the musical production and to stage a wide range of productions through the Limelights and Spotlights drama societies.

Many students from KS4 and KS5 take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards programme. Our Year 11 boys’ football team epitomises the school’s success on the sportsfield, having recently claimed the League and Cup double while our Sixth Form football team were North West Champions – all led by ex-Manchester City striker, and our Director of Sporting Excellence, Paul Dickov.

Artwork from students has been used in local exhibitions and we have even had students appear on national radio. Our House system provides leadership opportunities for students as well as a range of activities and competitions, while at the same time supporting students’ academic progress.

It is also our firm belief that we need to open our students’ eyes and ears to what they can achieve when they leave education and move into the world of work. Our careers programme is the envy of many other schools. Careers Week saw students from across the school go to some of the region’s most innovative and exciting employers.

At Cheadle Hulme High School we believe our role extends from the classroom into the wider community. Our onsite recreation centre, Club Cheadle Hulme, has more than 1,500 children and 500 adults visiting to take part in affordable activities to improve physical and mental wellbeing. We open our doors to local clubs, Sunday sports sessions and dance workshops.

Club Cheadle Hulme is part of our recently refurbished sports facilities which include a gym and weights room, a 3G pitch and a sports hall complete with climbing wall. Staff can join Club Cheadle Hulme for a reduced fee. Sixth Form

I have worked here for eight years and have been given countless opportunities to develop professionally and personally throughout that time. The staff and students at CHHS are encouraged to approach challenges with a growth mind-set which encourages everyone in our community to work hard and be the best they can be. I feel incredibly lucky to work within a school and a Trust that support each other in their pursuit of success.” Anna Ballard, Assistant Headteacher

“Since starting here in 2006 as an NQT I have loved every moment. Every year has brought a new challenge as the school has gone from strength to strength and I am extremely proud to be part of a team that has achieved such great success for its students. I have been given so many opportunities to develop, almost a new responsibility every year since I started, along with amazing support from the people I work with.” Lisa Brooks, Deputy Headteacher

“One of the best things about working at Cheadle Hulme High School is the camaraderie between different members of staff. Everyone works together and you are always encouraged to get involved in different departments and draw on their experience and opinions. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved in activities outside the classroom, such as taking part in the annual staff pantomime and going on school trips with the languages department. The opportunities here really are endless.” Will Gray, Head of Magnus House/ Teacher of Science

“As a member of staff at the Laurus Trust it has been a pleasure to come into work each day. Regardless of what department you work in as a teacher, or support staff, the Trust enables you as a professional to work at the highest possible standard, which ultimately positively impacts the students’ time here at the school. Specifically, as a Physical Education teacher, I have the facilities that most PE teachers can only dream of using at other schools which in turn allows me to develop further as a professional. I am very grateful to be involved in the Laurus Trust and part of Cheadle Hulme High School.” Mike Lawton, Teacher of Physical Education

“It is a pleasure working as part of the administration team here at Cheadle Hulme High School, I really enjoy coming to work. There is great team spirit and a massive sense of community between all members of staff. I enjoy working in such a positive environment and for a growing Trust and I look forward to what the future holds.” Paula Bridge, Secretary to English Department and Receptionist

The Laurus Trust and its affiliated schools are committed to safeguarding and protecting the children and young people that we work with. As such, all posts are subject to a safer recruitment process, including the disclosure of criminal records and vetting checks.

We ensure that we have a range of policies and procedures in place which promote safeguarding and safer working practice across the school. This is in line with statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education 2019 and The Education Act 2002, we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
