The Story of the Building of THE TUGU KUNSTKRING PALEIS Before and in the Future
This grand historical building housed the Fine Arts Circle of the Dutch East Indies (Nederlandsch-Indische Kunstkring of the Dutch East Indies) and was opened on the 17 April 1914.
This organization was founded for the first time on 1 April 1902 in Batavia, with the purpose to promote the practice of and the enthusiasm for the fine and decorative arts of the Indies.
The Nederlandsch-Indische Kunstkring was very active in organizing art exhibitions for those artists who resided in the Nederlands-Indië, as well as a center for young, learning artists to show their works.
Critics initially voiced rather negative reviews in the beginning on the exhibitions of these 'amateur' artists – however it was proven later on that these young painters became successful, professional artists.
This building had various functions, as it stayed faithful to its mission to promote anything related to the arts. Other than displaying 'second quality arts' between 1934 and 1939, it also presented world-class masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Marc Chagall and the likes. One of the wings of this building also housed a very popular café that sold fine food and wine, known as Stam en Weynes.
From 2013 onwards, this legendary building will maintain its original function from 99 years ago, thus it will be a proud center of art exhibitions, as well as other events with high appreciation to the beauty of arts and history. It will also house a gallery where guests can buy beautiful artworks, jewels, lifestyle products and other design items, a fine restaurant, a grand elegant lounge as well as a tea house.
The Tugu Kunstkring Paleis has been decorated and returned to its original splendor by the Tugu Hotels & Restaurants Group, who is known for bringing back to life the beautiful art, culture and history of the archipelago. Other than various international accolades received from international media and establishments as some of the best and most unique properties in the world, in 2013, The Tugu Hotels & Restaurants Group has received the 2013 HIW (Hospitality Investment World) CULTURE AWARD, an award that honours a successful hotel/hotel chain for outstanding work in growing their business in a way that has fully embraced and preserved the rich Indonesian cultures.
