Case Study – , Client: Carillion Services Project: , London Product: EcoCurve 550D Purpose: To determine the level of energy and resource efficiencies obtainable with the EcoCurveTM Date: August 2014 Background: Heathrow Airport, London is the world’s busiest by volume of passengers in 2013 (source Council International). The airport’s facilities are managed by Carillion Services and there is a desire by the owners, Heathrow Airports Ltd, to reduce the energy consumption of their estate.

The trial was conducted in Terminal 3 which has 45,000 passengers per day and approximately 19,000 staff employed.

Terminal 3 has approximately 150 public facing dryers and an additional 150 dryers used in the staff areas. The existing dryers have a power rating of 1100 watts, double that of the EcoCurveTM. In addition the warranty of the EcoCurveTM is 2.3 times longer than the existing dryers.

Details of Trial: One EcoCurve 550D Hand Dryer was installed at the exit of the Arrivals section of Terminal 3, in the male washroom adjacent to the bus stops for two weeks.

During the trial the dryer reported usage on a daily basis with the base data showing usage per hour throughout the day. The average usage per day over 16 day trial was 1,050 and an average drying time of 8.3 seconds.

Analysis: The drying time achieved is less than the advertised drying time of the existing dryers (11 seconds). The rated energy of the EcoCurveTM is 50% that of the existing dryer so the overall reduction in energy, carbon and cost per dry was 62%. Replacement due to warranty expiration is also reduced by a factor of over 2.

Outcome: The demonstrated savings have resulted in current negotiations with the client and property owners for installation of the EcoCurveTM throughout the estate.

Client Response: Carillion Facilities Management and Property Services have installed the new EcoCurveTM smart hand dryer by SAVORTEX Ltd at . According to the Chief Engineer at Carillion plc, “with the UK built environment alone contributing 28% to the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, smart energy/cost savings and effective washroom management based on real data intelligence is increasingly important to Carillion and our clients.

The EcoCurve smart hand dryer supports that strategy at Terminal 3 by reporting on energy, carbon and costs using actual footfall in the washrooms. With 45,000 passengers per day and

almost 20,000 employees at Terminal 3 the hand dryers get considerable use demonstrating unrivalled sustainability.

Based on the data intelligence produced by the EcoCurve, the smart dryer stands to reduce carbon emissions by 50% compared to previous solution, and offer the lowest carbon footprint per dry in its class.

Furthermore, Big Data is critical to managing facilities such as Heathrow and the SAVORTEX Data Intelligence Portal will help us manage and reduce the hidden costs in washrooms. The data will be used, not only for day-to-day washroom management, but for trend analysis over long periods of time supporting our sustainable procurement policy, allowing us to make decisions based on the intelligence the dryers are providing.

With its -low energy technology, SAVORTEX has developed a ground-breaking smart hand dryer that allows us to reduce carbon, waste and costs while improving our service to our clients.”
