DIRECTIONS TO HARLAXTON COLLEGE HARLAXTON RECEPTION/SECURITY From England- 01476-403000 From the U.S.- 011-44-1476-403000 FROM HEATHROW AIRPORT TO HARLAXTON: From Heathrow you want to make your way to King’s Cross Rail Station. This is where you catch trains to Grantham. From Monday to Saturday, there are several trains per hour to Grantham between 6.00 am until 8.30 pm. On Sundays and weekdays after 8.30 pm, trains run less frequently. Options from Heathrow to Kings Cross: Heathrow Airport is connected to the London Underground (the “tube”) system, which can lead you to King’s Cross Rail Station. You can take the Underground directly. It is definitely the least expensive option but it can be tricky with luggage in tow. The Heathrow Express is another option. A taxi from Heathrow Airport to King’s Cross Rail Station is your most expensive option. It could run £60 and take longer due to heavy traffic. Underground directions to King’s Cross and the train to Grantham: 1. In the airport “Arrival Hall,” look up and follow the signs to the London Underground. This will involve going down some stairs or escalators (and luggage carts are not allowed on escalators) – so look around to find the elevators. 2. Once you find the London Underground window, purchase a ticket to King’s Cross. (approximately £5.) No more luggage trolleys allowed at this point-- another reason to travel light. 3. Get on the tube- Piccadilly line (blue) going east - settle back for lots of stops. In approximately one hour, you will arrive at King’s Cross. 4. Be sure to keep your ticket – you’ll need it at the exit turnstile. 5. Go up the stairs and up some more stairs. (Elevators are impossible to find here). Once you get to street level, follow the signs to the Brit Rail part of the station. Once there, go to the window again and purchase a 2nd class return ticket (round-trip) to Grantham. Here is a site that can assist with rail travel planning if you’d like to purchase tickets in advance - http://tickets.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/gw/en/journeyplanning/mixingdeck Ask when the next train departs and from which platform. Heathrow Express to Kings Cross: Heathrow Express operates trains to London’s Paddington Station every 15 minutes beginning at 5 a.m. from terminals 1 and 3. The cost is approximately £34 return (round trip). This will take you to Paddington Station where you need to purchase your underground ticket and catch a train on the Hammersmith and City (pink) or Circle Line (yellow). These lines run together through these stops. FROM KING’S CROSS TO GRANTHAM: Look on the big board to find the right track for the train to Grantham, which should be listed as one of the destinations. Check with others in the “queue” to be sure you’re waiting for the right train. It’s probably also heading to Peterborough or Edinburgh. When the train arrives and is ready for passenger boarding, walk along the outside of the train until you see a “2” on a car. It’s a long walk. Board the train, stow your luggage in the luggage compartment when you enter. Find a seat and keep your ticket handy because the conductor will come by to check it. And then keep it handy again; you may need to show it in the Grantham station. Settle down for an hour’s ride. When you arrive in Grantham, exit the train promptly. Please note that trains don't stop at Grantham station for very long and you need to open the door by pressing the big green button. Lots of groups fail to disembark in time and end up in Retford, which adds at least another hour to your journey. Take the overpass over the tracks, go through the train station, exit the front door where there are usually taxis waiting. From Grantham station, Harlaxton is less than ten minutes away by taxi. The College recommends using Street Cars Taxis on 01476 590008 as they have negotiated competitive rates with them. The cost is £6.00 and is about half the price of random taxis you pick up outside the station. The taxi will take you to the Pegasus Courtyard of the Manor. Just ring the bell and you will be buzzed in by someone in reception. FROM GATWICK AIRPORT TO HARLAXTON: From the “Arrival Hall,” you have two choices to get to Grantham, where Harlaxton is located. We highly recommend option #1a below unless you are traveling very light. 1. VIA GATWICK EXPRESS: TRAIN TO VICTORIA; TAXI OR TUBE TO KING’S CROSS; TRAIN FROM KING’S CROSS TO GRANTHAM • Ask Traveler’s Information or follow the signs to the “Gatwick Express,” a train connecting Gatwick airport to Victoria Station. Buy a ticket from Gatwick to Grantham at this point. • Board the train; the ride will be approximately 30 minutes. The conductor will come by to check your ticket. • Exit at Victoria Station, where you have two choices to get from Victoria to King’s Cross, where you need to be. a. Go to the front of Victoria Station and join the queue for a taxi. Go to King’s Cross Rail Station. The cost will depend on the traffic – approximately £15. Or b. Follow the signs to the London Underground. Go to the window (easier than the machines at this stage), buy a ticket to King’s Cross and ask directions. (approximately £2) Enter King’s Cross; look on the board to determine the next train to Grantham. Follow the directions “From King’s Cross to Grantham.” Or 2. VIA THAMESLINK: TRAIN FROM GATWICK TO KING’S CROSS THAMESLINK STATION; WALK ONE BLOCK TO KING’S CROSS RAIL STATION; TRAIN FROM KING’S CROSS TO GRANTHAM • Ask Traveler’s Information or follow the signs in Gatwick South Terminal to the Thameslink rail line. Buy a ticket to Grantham. Board the train to London. Exit at the King’s Cross Thameslink Station. • You are now one block away from King’s Cross Rail Station and you have two ways to get to the main King’s Cross station. a. You may exit the front door and walk the one block to the Rail Station. It is quite a depressed area, safe enough by day, but I do not recommend it at night. b. There is also a tunnel that connects the two stations. Once you arrive in King’s Cross Rail station, follow the directions from King’s Cross to Grantham mentioned earlier. Directions From Nearest Mainline Stations From Euston Station: Allow 40 mins from the Euston to the College including walking time By Black Cab: A cab will get you there in less than 15 mins – will cost under £10. By Tube: You will have to physically leave Euston Mainline Station and walk the 5 mins to Euston Square where you can get on the Hammersmith & City or Circle Line to Edgware Road. By Bus: The Number 18 from Euston runs to the Edgware Road. It leaves from the main road outside Euston Station but you need to cross the main road and check you are going in the direction of Harlesden. The buses will not accept money, so you either need to Purchase an Oyster Card and put money on it or you some but stops have ticket machines by them but not all.

    Westminster’s Conservation Areas - Character Overview Westminster has 56 designated conservation areas which cover over 76% of the City. These cover a diverse range of townscapes from all periods of the City’s development and their distinctive character reflects Westminster’s differing roles at the heart of national life and government, as a business and commercial centre, and as home to diverse residential communities. A significant number are more residential areas often dominated by Georgian and Victorian terraced housing but there are also conservation areas which are focused on enclaves of later housing development, including innovative post-war housing estates. Some of the conservation areas in south Westminster are dominated by government and institutional uses and in mixed central areas such as Soho and Marylebone, it is the historic layout and the dense urban character combined with the mix of uses which creates distinctive local character. Despite its dense urban character, however, more than a third of the City is open space and our Royal Parks are also designated conservation areas. Many of Westminster’s conservation areas have a high proportion of listed buildings and some contain townscape of more than local significance. Below provides a brief summary overview of the character of each of these areas and their designation dates. The conservation area audits and other documentation listed should be referred to for more detail on individual areas. 1. Adelphi The Adelphi takes its name from the 18th Century development of residential terraces by the Adam brothers and is located immediately to the south of the Strand. The southern boundary of the conservation area is the former shoreline of the Thames.

Heathrow Airport by Tube The Piccadilly line connects Heathrow Airport to Central London and the rest of the Tube system. The Tube is cheaper than the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect but it takes a lot longer and is less comfortable. Tube services leave Heathrow every few minutes from approximately 5.10am (5.45am Sundays) to 11.35pm (11.25pm Sundays). Journey time to Piccadilly Circus is about 50 minutes.
