LMEOs Spatial Data Document December 2004

The development of Environmental Objectives (EOs) assists the achievement of Fish Community Objectives by identifying the biological, chemical, and physical needs of desired fish communities which relate to, or impede the success of FCOs. This project mapped and analyzed relevant environmental and fish data to help determine effective approaches to link environmental objectives to FCOs. The environmental and fish data collected for this project were placed within the Lake Michigan Geographic Information System (LMGIS) as a more holistic and sustainable approach for organizing the data. This document is intended to help introduce you to the LMGIS and direct you to the environmental layers that are most relevant to the data pertaining to the development of Environmental Objectives, such as maps of key life stages and their habitats and impediments.

Introduction to the Lake Michigan Geographic Information System v.1.0

The LMGIS is a subset of the Great Lakes GIS (GLGIS) which is a seamless, standardized, habitat-based GIS spatial database for each of the Great Lakes. The LMGIS is approximately 60 GB of data, images, and map projects contained on an external hard drive. A HTML user manual was developed to help assist you through the database. When you connect the hard drive to your computer and open the GLGIS folder you will find a user manual document along with four other folders. Begin by launching User_Manual.htm and navigating to the LMGIS page. This document contains an inventory of the data in the LMGIS as well as support documentation. The heart of the LMGIS is the raw data in the data folder. In the mini_projects folder you will find projects composed of data layers and maps that have been developed to answer a specific question using spatial data from the LMGIS. The LMGIS has four mini projects, an analysis of movement patterns of Chinook salmon, an analysis of species diversity of Michigan waters in Lake Michigan, an analysis of dams in the Lake Michigan basin, and a Lake Michigan Environmental Objectives project (see Appendix 1 for further details regarding these mini projects). In the project_files folder you will find ArcMap and ArcReader projects. These have been included to provide a structure for viewing some of the data included in this database. Finally, the support_documents folder contains this user manual and a table of contents of the GLGIS.

To fully interact with the geographic information in the GLGIS, you will need GIS software that supports the file formats inherent to GIS data. ArcGIS is recommended as there are many ArcMap projects that have already been created in this database. An ArcView user will be able to view and manipulate all of the raw data in the GLGIS but not open the pre-existing projects. If you do not currently have any GIS software on your computer, a free copy of ArcReader can be obtained online from ESRI. ArcReader is a relatively easy piece of software to learn as the interface is very intuitive and the available online help files are well written and quite useful. Please refer to the Support document page in the User Manual for more information on ArcReader. The raw data in the GLGIS are distributed in decimal degrees (i.e., latitude and longitude) in the NAD 83 datum. Several different projection files are included within the database, including a GLGIS projection specific to the Great Lakes region for users to be able to set an appropriate projection for their use. This approach was adapted to remain easily compatible with other projects having spatial foci. GIS data related to the development of Lake Michigan Environmental Objectives

Tables 1, 2 and 3 collectively are a comprehensive log of the data and maps contained in the LMGIS. A page in the user manual has been developed to highlight the data that specifically pertains to linking environmental objectives to fish community objectives. On this page are links to maps and databases describing fish distributions and movements, critical habitats and impediments. Below are the tables found in the user manual listing these data. Please open the User_Manual.htm and visit the LMEO page under the LMGIS to access all published map documents. NOTE- the User_Manual.htm is not on the WWW. It is located on the LMGIS external hard drive. The links in the tables below will not open a document unless you are within the User_Manual.htm on the external hard drive.

1.) CHS_CWT_Analysis\

Title: Analysis of Movement Patterns of Chinook Salmon in Lake Huron and Lake Michigan Inferred from Coded Wire Tag Returns, 1990-2000

Abstract: Analysis of Coded Wire Tag (CWT) returns from Chinook salmon planted in Lake Huron and Lake Michigan were weighted by fishing effort and mapped using ArcGIS.

Purpose: These maps allow you to visualize the movement of Chinook salmon from smolts released from 1990 to 2000. The Fundamental question: Is there a difference in the interpretation of salmon migration patterns using the CWT data if we standardize the tag returns for fishing and sampling effort?

Mini Project Organization: (Table 2) arcMap_projects: ArcMap documents that show tag returns in Lake Michigan from various stocking locations and summarized temporally (i.e. by year or by month) shapefiles_Geo_Ref: Stocking sites, return sites, shorelines and statistical districts. All of the files in this project are projected in the Michigan GeoRef projection.

Tables: Summarized tag return data. These tables are joined to the statistical districts to display tag return data on the maps.

2.) lm_envt_objectives\

Title: Lake Michigan Environmental Objectives

Abstract: The Great Lakes Fisheries Commission (GLFC) proposed the Joint Strategic Plan for Management of Great Lakes Fisheries (SGLFMP) in 1980 as commitment to an ecosystem approach to fisheries management. This plan called for the development of Fish Community Objectives (FCOs) for each of the Great Lakes as well as a request for Lake Committees to identify environmental issues that may impede development of FCOs. The GLFC continued stressing their efforts toward an ecosystem approach in fisheries management in 2001 with the Strategic Vision of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission for Healthy Great lakes Ecosystems.

Purpose: The environmental and fish data collected for this project were placed within the Lake Michigan GIS in an attempt for a more holistic approach for organizing the data. This mini project contains all of the data that was used as illustrative figures in the LMEO document.

Mini Project Organization: nearshore: Layers defining the nearshore area of Lake Michigan (up to 30m), the degree of shoreline protection and areas of rocky nursery habitats for yellow perch (adapted from J. Janssen unpublished data).

reefs: Reef locations and lake trout refuge areas in Lake Michigan and locations of historic spawning sites from Goodyear et. al. (1982) for lake trout and lake whitefish in relation to documented natural and artificial reef habitat.

tributaries: This folder contains various data sets that allow one to estimate potential stream habitat and the suitability of that particular habitat in Michigan. --Using the LMGIS dam database length of accessible stream habitat below the first dam and length of inaccessible stream habitat above the first dam of major river systems in the Lake Michigan basin was calculated. --Spawning habitat suitability for steelhead was calculated from landscape-scale attributes from the Michigan Valley Segments. --Number of smolts per river system below the first dam and the estimated total number of smolts to leave the river with the removal of the first dam was estimated. --Length of accessible stream to great lake spawners and the amount of additional stream that could be accessed with the removal of the first dam was also calculated

Abstract: This project analyzed data from the Michigan Fish Atlas to look at species diversity and distribution in Michigan waters of Lake Michigan. sampled by various which has presenence locations for fish

4.) MI_Downstream_Dams\

Title: Analysis of dams in the Lake Michigan basin and an analysis of Michigan dams and tributaries in the Lake Michigan basin

Abstract: The goal of this mini project was to provide estimates of the amount and type of available stream above major dams in the Lake Michigan basin. It uses the dams database and the Michigan valley segments to describe potential habitat above dams in the state of Michigan for the Lake Michigan basin.

Purpose: Analyze potential habitat above dams that would increase suitable spawning habitat to potamodromous species of the great lakes. These data layers are also designed to be used for simple dam removal scenarios.

Process steps:

For the entire basin, the NHD line work was broken at each dam an attributed as ‘YES’, reach is available to great Lake Spawners or ‘NO’, reach is not available to Great Lake Spawners (GL_accessiblity.shp). This attribution was done for all dams including low head barriers and for Salmonids which included all dams 5 feet or lower. From this shapefile you can get summaries of the total amount of accessible and inaccessible streams for the basin.

The Michigan Valley Segment (VSEC) line work allows more information to be extracted about the segments upstream of dams in the state of Michigan. The VSEC line work was broken at each dam and the segments accessible above that dam were attributed with the downstream dam name and ID number. Now, we were able to calculate the amount of stream above each major dam as well as the type of gradient available above the dams. This summarized information was attributed to each dam in the shapefile MI_major_dams.shp. By clicking on any particular dam in the MI_major_ dams.shp you can see the total amount of stream above that dam and how much of that stream falls into particular a gradient class (i.e. very low, low, moderate, high, and very high).

Organization:

GRADIENT ABOVE DAMS-MI SREAMs.xls: Excel Workbook of summarized data sheets of the stream length and gradient classification by major river system, and above major dams in the Lake Michigan basin.

GL_access.mxd: There are two data frames in this project. The top frame “Accessible streams in LM Basin” contains basin wide data layers and displays accessible stream segments for the entire Lake Michigan basin. The second frame “MI analysis of accessible stream habitat” contains layers that are specific to Michigan streams in the Lake Michigan basin.
