Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 14, 2019

One of my favorite poems in the sacred scripture is Ecclesiastes 3:1-9. In the passage, the author, Qoheleth, presents a thesis: “there is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven.” We see that Qoheleth describes the cycle of human life, emphasizing that this life has an ordered time, which no human has control over, because God is in charge of everything, including birth and death, weeping and laughing, silence and speaking. These are God’s appointed seasons. He simply points out that nothing happens under the sun without God’s permission. Everything is in accordance with His will. He observes that God has determined and set the fitting and appropriate time for everything that occurs in this life, emphasizing the sovereignty of God in shaping events and capturing the essential message of the book – the temporal nature of human existence. He affirms that it is good that there is a set time in life. God, the creator of all things, and the starting point of human life, made everything beautiful in its time. Thus, the poem teaches us that there is a Divine order that permeates human life, which we should receive with unpretentiousness. Every day we encounter positive and negative seasons. We want to disentangle ourselves from these negative seasons because they cause a lot of sadness in our lives, but we cling to the positive seasons because they uplift our spirit. At some point, we have to realize that these seasons are part of the antitheses of life. We should seek God’s guidance as we deal with these changing times and seasons. Joy and sadness are part of our human destiny, part of the ordered cycle of human life that God created, which we should accept, knowing that God is always with us in every season of our lives. Everything happens for a reason, not by mere accident, as our destiny slowly takes form. Qoheleth wants us to recognize this truth about the peregrinations of life, namely that only God can help us to understand what we experience. God has a purpose in ordering and setting these times for us. He wants us to learn the cycle of human life is connected to His Divine will. Lastly, Qoheleth concludes that this life is beyond our control, and God is the one who controls this life. We should appreciate and enjoy the marvelous creation of God, cherishing every minute of our lives. It has been four weeks since I moved to St. Rose of Lima Parish. I have been enjoying Fr. Matthew’s company and you, the parishioners, have been very supportive. You are some of the nicest people I have met in my life. I have to say, what an amazing parish St. Rose of Lima is. I want to cherish my time with you, since it is my first assignment as a newly ordained priest. I always say to myself: “nothing in life happens by accident, as everything happens for a reason, as our destiny slowly takes form.” I am extremely happy to be part of St. Rose of Lima Parish. Now I have over a thousand names to memorize. I will take Qoheleth’s advice: “there is an appointed time for everything.” I have 365 days to memorize all your names. I promise I will cherish every minute of my life with you.

I humbly remain,

Fr. Kerwin Gaza

The Toddlers had Water Day! The water table is like the bathtub for many young children. It helps them unwind. It’s soothing. It’s easy for us to set up, and it’s fun for them! Oh, and it works those fine motor skills. All that squeezing, pouring and dumping? Yes, it has a purpose. We love those HOT July days when we can enjoy splashing and dumping water on ourselves! We can’t wait for more of those hot, humid days so we can enjoy exploring with Water!
