The Gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost

On Pentecost Sunday we remember and celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Blessed Mary and the disciples. This is the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church, and we commonly think of this as our birthday, the birthday of the Church. However, if we take a closer look at the origins of the Church, particularly from the viewpoint of the early Chris- tians, we gain a more detailed and instructive vision of God’s plan. Simply put, the Church is born from the side of Christ on the Cross and becomes manifest on the day of Pentecost.

As the Universal Church states in our majestic Catechism of the Catholic Church (Libreria Editrice Vaticana 2016 abbreviated CCC), “The Church is born primarily of Christ's total self- giving for our salvation, anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist and fulfilled on the cross. "The origin and growth of the Church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the open side of the crucified ." (CCC 766, St. ’s Catechism about 490AD, see also Dogmatic Constitution on the Church LG 3). On the other hand, at Pentecost, the Church becomes fully prepared for the mission of spreading the Gospel of Christ and begins that mission, “The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy SC 6, LG 2, CCC 1076).

An important question we should ask is, “where is the Holy Spirit active in my life?” I’d like to highlight three points. First, we have access to the truth of God in Sacred Scripture and Sa- cred Tradition, in the Church, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (CCC 80 – 82). Next, the Holy Spirit is active in our lives whenever we participate in the Sacramental Worship of the Church (CCC 1108). The gift of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the "dispensation of the mystery" the age of the Church, during which Christ manifests, makes present, and communi- cates his work of salvation through the liturgy of his Church.” (CCC 1076, SC 6, LG 2). Finally, the Holy Spirit is God’s agent of unity in the world, "It is the Holy Spirit, dwelling in those who believe…who brings about that wonderful communion of the faithful and joins them togeth- er so intimately in Christ that he is the principle of the Church's unity. Unity is the essence of the Church.” (CCC 813, , Commentary on John about 430AD).

The message of Pentecost is that, with the coming of Christ, God reveals to us His inner life, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We have access to God’s truth and His plan for our lives. When we cooperate, God strengthens us and guides us to authentic life that becomes eternal life. The fundamental meaning of our lives is unity with God and each other.

First Reading Acts 2:1-11 (63B) A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from , both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

Responsorial Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34 R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! How manifold are your works, O LORD! the earth is full of your creatures. R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD. R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

Page 9 - 646 Second Reading 1 Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13

A Reading from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.

As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Gospel John 20:19-23

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John Glory to you, O Lord.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Page 10 - 646
