  • A Name Identifies You in a Unique Way, Not Just Your Physical Self, but Who You Are As Person
CHOOSING A CONFIRMATION NAME. A name identifies you in a unique way, not just your physical self, but who you are as person. One of the traditional practices in the Church at the time of Confirmation is choosing a name that will remind you of this sacrament. Your prayerful reflection will help you determine that name. You might want to recommit yourself to your baptismal name since it expresses the relationship that exist between these two sacraments, especially after you reflect on its meaning and discover some of the people who shared your name in Christian history. You might want to choose the name of a saint who represents the type of Cristian you wish to be. It is important to learn as much as you can about your patron saint. After all, you are asking this saint to be your friend and advocate for the rest of your life. Whether you decide to stay with your baptismal name or pick a new name, take the time to research and explore the root meaning of the name, for as Scripture says: “Yahweh calls each of us by name”. One of the most beautiful parts of your journey towards confirmation is choosing a patron saint, one of the great saints of our Church whose life in Christ is one that inspires you and calls you to be an ardent and radiant catholic. The saint are not just people who lived long ago! Moreover, they are alive in heaven now, totally present in our lives through God’s grace and their prayers.

Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ TH 45 GENERAL CHAPTER Rome – October 2006 Letter of Introduction 1 – Principal Decree 2 – Chapter discussion about the Charism, Mission and Restructuring 3 – Approved Proposals - 1 - General Secretariat Rome - January 2007 2 Letter of introduction Dear religious, sisters and brothers of the Passionist Family, “Let us go to meet the Lord who is coming.” The prayer and the liturgy of these days have repeatedly invited it to “seek” the Lord, to follow in his footsteps to find him and to celebrate with him. Throughout Advent Mary has accompanied us, she who “traveled to the hill country in haste” (Lk. 1:39), immediately after the Annunciation, humbly awaiting her Son. Together with Joseph, her spouse, “[they] went up from Galilee” to Bethlehem for the census. The Lord would be born in a stable for animals “because there was no room for them in the inn.” The all powerful Creator of heaven and earth who governs the universe and measures out time, the “Son of the Most High” to whom “the Lord God will give the throne of David and he will reign forever” is wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger (Lk. 2:7). We recall the feelings of tenderness and affection of St. Paul of the Cross when, during the procession of Christmas Midnight Mass, he gazed upon the image of the Christ Child, bound in swaddling clothes. It was similar to his experience of contemplating the picture that he had in his room of the Child Jesus sleeping on the cross.

  • A Brief History of the Parish of Saint Eugene up to the 60Th Anniversary
A Brief History of the Parish of Saint Eugene Up to the 60th Anniversary On Sunday, November 6, 1949, Father John Dougherty, Monsignor John Fearns and Father Roger Franklin offered four Masses at the Club House Inn on Tuckahoe Road, attended by a total of 378 members of the new St. Eugene's Parish. The official document establishing the parish and appointing Father Dougherty as pastor had been signed by Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, and dated October 31, 1949. In choosing as the patron of the parish the seventh-century Pope St. Eugene I, the Cardinal was honoring his great friend Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli). Northeast Yonkers, before World War II a more or less sparsely populated area, located between the urban west side of Yonkers and the established communities of Bronxville, Tuckahoe and Crestwood to the east, was by the late 1940S experiencing a period of rapid growth, typical of many suburban communities across the nation during the post-war years. The need for a new parish was clear. Cardinal Spellman had the right man for the job in Father Dougherty, then spiritual director of St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie. Old-time parishioners speak with great affection of Father-later Monsignor Dougherty, a man of holiness, vision and zeal, to whom we all owe so much. Father Dougherty's dream of a church and a school would soon become reality. To that end, 5.6 acres of largely wooded land on the northeast corner of Tuckahoe Road and Central Park Avenue-diagonally across from the Club House Inn property-were purchased.

  • Rose of Lima: Some Thoughts on Purity and Penance*
Rose of Lima: some thoughts on purity and penance* SARA MAITLAND Rose of Lima was born in Peru in 1586 and died in 1617 at the age of thirty-one. She was canonised in 1671 ± the first American-born saint of the Roman Catholic Calendar ± and was named principal patron of South America and the Philippines. She remains a popular saint, not just in her native Peru, but until very recently in Europe also. There are innumerable holy cards and representations of her. She is usually shown wearing a religious habit (although she was never a nun) and either surrounded by or wearing garlands of roses. She has a modest expression and a pale sweet face. Infantilized, she used to appear regularly in hagiographical volumes, especially those designed for the edification of small girls. All this is extremely odd. It has very little to do with her life, and they would be bizarre parents or catechetists who really wanted the girls in their charge to emulate Rose of Lima in any very direct way. Although such volumes endeavour valiantly to stress her various charitable works, especially among the enslaved and oppressed Indians, and her experiences of a mystical marriage to Christ, Rose of Lima's real claim to fame and sanctity was the extraordinary life of violent and self-inflicted penance which she maintained from extremely early in her childhood until she died. It was no less astonishing that she should find room on her emaciated body to engrave in it, by her discipline, the wounds of the son of God ..

  • Beginning Contemplation According to John of the Cross
JAMES W. KINN Beginning Contemplation according to John of the Cross t. John of the Cross deserves the title Mystical SDoctor. His writings are profound and original. He is without parallel in his rich content and brilliant teach- ing on the mystical life. To many, however, his writings seem almost opaque. They include tedious repetitions, disproportionate emphases, misplaced material, unwieldy sentences, and imprecise language. For example, John often speaks of "this night" without specifying the active night of sense, the active night of spirit, the passive night of sense, or the passive night of spirit. We can determine what night he means only by careful study of the con- text. Spiritual writers who interpret John often confuse his meaning instead of clarifying it because they mix the nights indiscriminately. The focus of this article is quite narrow: it centers on John’s description of the beginning of contemplation. 176 James W. Kinn is a retired priest of the Chicago Archdiocese. This article is a further development of his book Contemplation 2000: St John of the Cross for Today (Saint Bede’s Publications, 1997). He can be addressed 6318 243rd Court; Salem, Wisconsin 53168. Review for Religious First we will try to clarify his mystical teaching on the dark night as the actual beginning of infused contempla- tion. Then we will describe his practical advice for pray- ing this way. John treats this beginning of contemplation especially in his Dark Night, Books I and II. Spiritual writers agree with John of the Cross about the general description of contemplative prayer. They see contemplation as an integral -- development of prayer.
