SȱȹȾɄ JȿȸȾ NȵɅȽȱȾȾ RȿȽȱȾ CȱɄȸȿȼȹȳ CȸɅɂȳȸ Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, Last weekend I spoke to you about procedures we are putting in place to prepare for the inevitable entrance of the coronavirus onto the Eastern Shore and Lower Delaware scene. I want to thank you for your help in keeping us healthy. The World Health Organization (an agency of the United Nations) has issued the following “Protection Measures for Everyone”: Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcoholbased hand rub or wash them with soap and water; this kills viruses that may be on your hands. Maintain at least 3 feet distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately. Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. I want to recommend also that we seek the intercession of the saints as we ask God to spare us from the effects of this new virus. Specifically, I want to recommend to you St. Roch and St. Rosalie. St. Roch came from a noble family in Majorca; he lived in the 14th century. At age 20, his parents having died, he gave his entire fortune to the poor and went on pilgrimage to Rome. While there, he began to minister to victims of the plague that was ravaging Italy at the time. He himself was infected but recovered and was re- puted to have performed many “healing” miracles. When he returned to his native Majorca, he was misidentified and incarcerated; in fact, he died in prison and was only correctly identified when the coroner noticed a birthmark on Roch’s chest in the shape of a cross. Miracles were reported at hisintercessionafter his death and he is invoked against pestilence and plague. We know very little about St. Rosalie. She was born in Sicily in 1130 and died there in 1166, living most of her short life as a hermit in a cave. Five hundred years after her birth (more or less), in 1624, Sicily suffered a terrible plague. During this hardship Saint Rosa- lia appeared first to a sick woman, then to a hunter, to whom she indicated where her remains were to be found. She asked him to bring her bones to Palermo and have them carried in procession through the city. The hunter found her bones and brought them to Palermo, where the citizens processed with them around the city three times. The plague miraculously ceased. We believe that those members of the Body of Christ who have gone before us continue to be concerned on our behalf and continue to want to help us. Let’s enlist these two saints to intercede for us. O Blessed Saint Roch, patron of the sick, have pity on those who lie upon a bed of suffering. Your power was so great when you were in this world that through your intercession many were healed of their diseases. Now that you are in heaven, your power is not less. Offer, then, to God our sighs and tears and obtain for us that health we seek. (Repeat the next invocation three times): St. Roch, pray for us, that we may be preserved from all diseases of body and soul. St. Rosalie, confessor and virgin, we pray to God for our families and friends. Through your powerful prayers, may we ob- tain health, life, and eternal salvation. We pray today especially for protection against the coronavirus and from all viral infections. O glorious virgin and confessor, St. Rosalie, I promise henceforth to remember and follow your example of faith and love. Pray for me and mine. Father in heaven, we thank You for the communion of saints so that we can draw near to You through the prayers of St. Rosalie and St. Roch. Through their prayers, help us to remember that our destiny is heaven. As they gave up all things in this world for the sake of Your Kingdom, through their prayers, may we love more fully Your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who together with You and the Holy Spirit are one God forever and ever. Amen. May God keep us healthy, strong, and faithful as we make our way through this holy season of Lent. In Christ Jesus, Rev. • A Brief History of the Parish of Saint Eugene up to the 60Th Anniversary
A Brief History of the Parish of Saint Eugene Up to the 60th Anniversary On Sunday, November 6, 1949, Father John Dougherty, Monsignor John Fearns and Father Roger Franklin offered four Masses at the Club House Inn on Tuckahoe Road, attended by a total of 378 members of the new St. Eugene's Parish. The official document establishing the parish and appointing Father Dougherty as pastor had been signed by Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, and dated October 31, 1949. In choosing as the patron of the parish the seventh-century Pope St. Eugene I, the Cardinal was honoring his great friend Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli). Northeast Yonkers, before World War II a more or less sparsely populated area, located between the urban west side of Yonkers and the established communities of Bronxville, Tuckahoe and Crestwood to the east, was by the late 1940S experiencing a period of rapid growth, typical of many suburban communities across the nation during the post-war years. The need for a new parish was clear. Cardinal Spellman had the right man for the job in Father Dougherty, then spiritual director of St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie. Old-time parishioners speak with great affection of Father-later Monsignor Dougherty, a man of holiness, vision and zeal, to whom we all owe so much. Father Dougherty's dream of a church and a school would soon become reality. To that end, 5.6 acres of largely wooded land on the northeast corner of Tuckahoe Road and Central Park Avenue-diagonally across from the Club House Inn property-were purchased.

He was taken the same day to the parish church, baptized and named for one of the patron saints of his homeland, John Nepomucene. The baby was the third child and the first son in the family of Philip and Agnes Neumann. His father, a native of Bavaria, owned a small stocking mill and was a minor village official. His mother was a Czech, a devout woman who attended Mass daily. Painting of young John Neumann by itinerant artist Young John Nepomucene Neumann developed into a keen student with a passion for books and for learning. He was gifted with a quick mind for study and a rare ability for languages. His schooling began in Prachatitz and continued after he was twelve in the town of Budweis, twenty-two miles away. He attended the Budweis Gymnasium (high school) and a philosophical institute there. At age seven, the boy began to receive the sacrament of penance. At eight, he was confirmed by the Bishop of Budweis on the occasion of the first episcopal visit to Prachatitz that villagers could remember. Old print of town and church of Prachatitz.
