  • Rose of Lima: Some Thoughts on Purity and Penance*
Rose of Lima: some thoughts on purity and penance* SARA MAITLAND Rose of Lima was born in Peru in 1586 and died in 1617 at the age of thirty-one. She was canonised in 1671 ± the first American-born saint of the Roman Catholic Calendar ± and was named principal patron of South America and the Philippines. She remains a popular saint, not just in her native Peru, but until very recently in Europe also. There are innumerable holy cards and representations of her. She is usually shown wearing a religious habit (although she was never a nun) and either surrounded by or wearing garlands of roses. She has a modest expression and a pale sweet face. Infantilized, she used to appear regularly in hagiographical volumes, especially those designed for the edification of small girls. All this is extremely odd. It has very little to do with her life, and they would be bizarre parents or catechetists who really wanted the girls in their charge to emulate Rose of Lima in any very direct way. Although such volumes endeavour valiantly to stress her various charitable works, especially among the enslaved and oppressed Indians, and her experiences of a mystical marriage to Christ, Rose of Lima's real claim to fame and sanctity was the extraordinary life of violent and self-inflicted penance which she maintained from extremely early in her childhood until she died. It was no less astonishing that she should find room on her emaciated body to engrave in it, by her discipline, the wounds of the son of God ..

  • Biography of Saint Rose of Lima
Biography of St. Rose of Lima St. Rose of Lima was born Isabella Flores de Oliva on April 20, 1586 to a family of educated, but impoverished Spanish immigrants in Lima, Peru. At her confirmation, she took the name of Rose, because as an infant, her face had been seen as transformed into a mystical rose. She was pious from an early age. At age five, she built a small chapel for herself in the family garden. When she made her first Confession, she obtained permission from her confessor to make a vow of virginity. Rose had a strong devotion for Jesus and His Holy Mother and spent many hours praying before the Blessed Sacrament. With St. Catherine of Siena as her model, Rose fasted three times a week, offered up penances, cut off her beautiful hair, and wore coarse clothing. She frequently deprived herself of food, water, and sleep. As a result of her exterior mortification, she had interior mystical experiences as well as long periods of darkness and desolation. For fifteen years, she went through the "dark night of the soul." Rose worked hard to support her poor parents and she humbly obeyed them, except when they tried to get her to marry. For ten years she fought them on this issue as she had secretly taken a vow of virginity at the age of five. At age 20, Rose joined the Third Order of St. Dominic and thereafter increased her penances as well as her good works. She moved into a small hut in her parents' garden and served the poor and the sick in a makeshift infirmary.

  • Cooking with the Saints November
Meet St. Martin de Porres Martin was born in Lima, Peru in 1579 and had a tough childhood. His parents never married each other and after the birth of a sister, his father abandoned the family. Martin was bi-racial and reared in poverty, locked into a low level of Lima’s society. When he was 12, his mother apprenticed him to a barber-surgeon. Martin learned how to cut hair and also how to draw blood, care for wounds, and prepare and administer medicines. After a few years, Martin applied to the Dominicans to be a “lay helper,” not feeling himself worthy to be a religious brother. After nine years, the example of his prayer, penance, charity and humility led the community to request him to make full religious profession. Many of his nights were spent in prayer; his days were filled with nursing the sick and caring for the poor. It was particularly impressive at that time that he treated all people regardless of their color, race, or status. He was instrumental in founding an orphanage, took care of slaves brought from Africa, and managed the daily alms of the monastery with practicality, as well as generosity. Side by side with his daily work in the kitchen, laundry, and infirmary, Martin’s life reflected God’s extraordinary gifts and many extraordinary miracles took place in Martin's life: ecstasies that lifted him into the air, light filling the room where he prayed, bi-location, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures, and a remarkable rapport with animals. He was a good friend of another saint of Peru, Rose of Lima.
