What is unique about the fourth week of Advent this year is that it is being observed for an entire week; seven days. Next year when Day falls on Monday, the fourth week of Advent will begin on December 24 and will be observed only one day. This being the case we still have an entire week of the Advent season to prepare ourselves for the celebration of the birth of .

These weeks before Christmas have been a busy time of getting ready. Christmas lights and decorations have been going up. Retailers have been busy with their Black Friday and Christmas shopping sales. Radio stations turned to playing Christmas carols 24/7, and the Hallmark Network, among others, started their countdowns with non-stop Christmas movies. As nice as all this is, other than an occasional carol, there really is not much said about the One who is the real reason for the season.

I understand the “holly jollies”, the Santa Clauses, the mistletoe, the stockings, the snowmen, elves and reindeer. These have all become a part of the festive celebration that Christmas is. What seems to be missing is the guest of honor at his own birthday party. How can we celebrate the birthday of Jesus without including him or mentioning his name? A few years ago I came across a little essay about the celebration of Christmas. It provides some food for thought and I’d like to share it with you. It’s entitled Mary’s Dream…

I had a dream, Joseph, I don't understand it, not really, but I think it was about a birthday celebration for our Son. I think that was what it was all about. The people had been preparing for it for about six weeks. They had decorated the house and bought new clothes. They'd gone shopping many times and bought elaborate gifts. It was peculiar, though, because the presents weren't for our Son.

They wrapped them in beautiful paper and tied them with lovely bows and stacked them under a tree. Yes, a tree, Joseph, right in their house. They'd decorated the tree also. The branches were full of glowing balls and sparkling ornaments. There was a figure on the top of the tree. It looked like an might look. Oh, it was beautiful.

Everyone was laughing and happy. They were all excited about the gifts. They gave the gifts to each other, Joseph, not to our Son. I don't think they even knew Him. They never mentioned His name. Doesn't it seem odd for people to go to all that trouble to celebrate someone's birthday if they don't know Him?

I had the strangest feeling that if our Son had gone to this celebration He would have been intruding. Everything was so beautiful, Joseph, and everyone so full of cheer, but it made me want to cry. How sad for Jesus -not to be wanted at His own birthday celebration.

I'm glad it was only a dream. How terrible, Joseph, if it had been real. (Copyright © 1986 Bethany Farms, Box 311, Carrllton, IL 62016)

May this fourth week of Advent and this final week before Christmas allow us to prepare for the One who is the real reason for the season. Let us remember to keep Christ in Christmas, as it is Jesus whom God sent into the world, because He cares enough for us to send His very best!

I would like to thank all our parish organizations and parishioners for all that you have done during these days before Christmas, for opening your hearts and for reaching out to those who are less fortunate. I thank the Women’s Guild for sponsoring the Angel Tree. Each year many people, seniors and children, are the recipients of much generosity at this time of year, thanks to your caring. Thank you to the men of the Society of St. Mary who sponsored the annual Breakfast with Santa, giving the opportunity to families to share in the joy of the season. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for sponsoring the Christmas Party. Thank you also to everyone for the financial donations and turkeys that we were able to share with Catholic Charities and families that have special needs. May God bless you all for you goodness, generosity and caring.

Fr. Gerry
