PASTORS CORNER: I have heard it said, and yes, I have found myself some years saying it as well. “I can’t wait until this year is over!” We never have enough time, so do we really want to wish time away? There may be some years, some months, some days when we really wish that they would pass away quickly. It is in those times that we need to draw a deep breath and pause and see if we can pin point what God is doing in our lives. Regardless of how bad things may seem, God is with us, Emmanuel. The OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE challenge is to see the blessings in our lives. It is also to see the lesson we can learn from the events of our lives, both good and bad. Did I become more understanding, sympathetic, compassionate, and forgiving? Did the challenges and the joys of this past year lead me to a deeper relationship with God, with my family and with others? In the for today we see Mary reflecting upon the events that have taken place. “And Mary kept all these things, reflecting upon them in her heart.” The events of the past year for Mary have seemed like a whirlwind of activities. She finds out that she is pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Her cousin who has been barren and now older is pregnant. She has the baby after traveling miles by mule in a stable and now shepherds and wise men come to pay her son homage. Talk about someone who had her life turned upside down. And Mary takes all that has happened and reflects upon them. She meditates. As we begin a new year may we imitate Mary in taking time in our lives to reflect upon what God has been doing in our lives. In doing so I think you will be amazed that it was not just in the achievements and good times of our lives, but also in the midst of our challenges and sufferings that God was present. He is truly Emmanuel, God with us. And we have truly been blessed by God throughout the past year. It is with this assurance of God’s presence that we can enter the New Year confident that no matter what happens we will be okay.

Fr. John
