Future Direction Subcommittee of the Supreme Council Polish National Catholic Church

The Solemnity of All Saints November 1, 2017

Dear Bishops, Very Rev. and Rev. Fathers, and Faithful of our Holy Church,

As we draw to a close this Year of Commitment across our Polish National Catholic Church we are called to commit ourselves to living thankful lives. St. Paul writes in his letter to the Colossians (3:17): whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Are we grateful for the blessings God has given us? Are we thankful for our faith, our family and our church? Do we show our thankfulness in the manner in which we live our daily lives? How does your parish show thankfulness to God for His many blessings? Some items for consideration during this month especially: Thanksgiving food drives, providing Thanksgiving meals to those in need or alone, drives to support homeless veterans (clothing, food, other items) and don't forget national collection week for Operation Christmas Child begins November 13. Just a couple of ways we can show our thankfulness by living as our Lord commands. Prayer of Thanksgiving (2010 PNCC Prayer Book): Father all powerful, Your gifts are countless and Your goodness infinite. We come to You, O God, offering our most humble and heartfelt thanks for the many blessings we have received from You. Open our hearts to the needs of others, so that we may share Your gifts in loving service. Teach us to express our PRAYER REQUESTS thanksgiving not only with our lips, but in all that we do. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES are extended to the following As we gather for Holy Mass on Thanksgiving Day one of the Gospel parishioners who are celebrating their birthdays this selections is from St. Luke 17:11-19: On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going week: through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers Mary Ann Wachna 11/24 approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves Barbara Kneeland 11/28 to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he Andrew Heath 12/01 saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, May God bless you and grant you all “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.” a very Happy Birthday!

Let us make sure we are always like the one that returned praising God and being PARISHIONERS: Bishop Stanley Bilinski, thankful! PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Cursory histories of Saints celebrated this week: 11/26 - Peter of Alexandria - When Peter became bishop of Alexandria in 300, he perceived the need for some rules which would lovingly but sternly welcome back into the Christian fold those who had lapsed from the faith and then returned. These rules were eventually accepted throughout the Eastern Church, but others criticized Peter of Alexandria for being far too lenient. Some of these critics were hypocrites. Peter of Alexandria excommunicated those who usurped his position. In 311 Caesar Maximinus Daia began persecuting Christians again. The bishop was put to death. The Coptic Church call him 'the complement of the martyrs' since he was the last Christian to die for the faith before Constantine granted religious toleration throughout the empire. 11/27 - James Intercisus - "Intercisus" means "cut to pieces", which is precisely what happened to James in 421. The king began to persecute Christians in 420. To his alter shame, James decided to apostatize from Christianity father than lose the favor of the king. When the king died, the parents of James wrote to their son to warn him of his ways. Ashamed, James quit the court of the king. Learning that James had become a Christian again, the new king debated with his counsellors what to do with James, and they decreed that unless he once again denied his faith, the saint should be hung from a beam and his body slowly cut to pieces. Those commissioned to perform this cruel deed tried to make him give way. So they began to slowly cut pieces from his body. When they cut off his thumb, he began to pray. Many Christians and others in the crowd begged James to give way. But the saint continued to pray, offering each hacked off piece of his body to God, until finally an executioner cut off his head. His dead body lay in no fewer than 28 pieces. 11/28 - Catherine Laboure - French, born 1816. 11/29 - Sernin of Toulouse - Sernin was born in Rome and in 245 was sent by the pope to preach the Gospel in Spain. Sernin was consecrated bishop of Toulouse after being sent there as well. His preaching soon gained many converts from Christianity. But it also offended the priests of the pagan temple at Toulouse. To show his contempt for the pagan gods, Sernin took a house on one side of it and built a small church on the other side. This is said to have silenced completely the temple oracles, from which the pagan priest drew their principal profit. These pagans, assuming that Sernin's behavior had displeased their gods, one day hauled him into their temple where there was a bullock about to be sacrificed. The angry priests tied Sernin to it by the feet, and drove the breast out of the temple sown a hill. The saint's head was smashed and his brains spilled out onto the ground. Today the church of St Sernin is the largest Romanesque church built in France, and the saint's body lies in the , in a great tomb constructed in 1746 and resting on bulls of bronze. 11/30 - Andrew the Apostle - Among the followers of John the Baptist was a fisherman named Andrew. After John had been arrested, Jesus came into Galilee. His message was, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent .Saints of God, pray for us! and believe in the good news." As he passed by the Sea of Galilee he saw Simon and Andrew, who were fishing. Jesus said, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Saint John's Gospel suggests that Andrew was the first to hear this message. He then went to his brother Simon and said, "We have found the Messiah." So Saint Andrew was the very first apostle to be called by Jesus. Andrew also proved to be the first of all Christian missionaries. The show Andrew ready to sit humbly at his Master's feet, asking questions on behalf of the others, alongside Peter, James and John, who were the leading apostles. When Jesus had been followed by about 5000 men, none of whom had anything to eat; the disciples wondered how Jesus would feed them. Andrew had enough faith to realize that however small the amount of food available, Jesus would be able to find food for all those present. He was the one who found the lad with the five loaves and two fish - though in bringing these to Jesus he did ask "what are they among so many?" Jesus used them to fill all 5000, with 12 baskets of fragments left over. He is said to have preached the Gospel in Scythia and Greece and even in Byzantium before being crucified (on an X-shaped cross) at Patras in Acaia in 60. 12/1 - Eligius - Eligius's father was a goldsmith and metalworker and when his son showed similar talent, he apprenticed Eligius to the master of the mint. Eligius acquired great skill at working in precious metals, and decided to seek his fortune in Paris. There he came to the notice of Bobbo, treasurer to the king. The king needed a treasurer and the post was give to Eligius. Soon he was rich. His wealth was devoted to the poor. Once a stranger asked the way to his home in Paris was told he would recognize it by the great concourse of poor persons outside. Eligius developed into a deeply religious man. When the king gave him land, he founded a monastery there, as well as setting up the first ever workshop for producing Limoges enamels. Soon after Clovis II came to the throne, Eligius was elected bishop. He spread the gospel. His most loyal assistants included several men and women who had been slaves, until Eligius bought and freed them. He founded nunneries, and ruled as bishop for nineteen fruitful years. Death approached in 659 and his body was laid in his cathedral. 12/2 - Viviana - Apronianus, governor of Rome in 363, lost an eye in an accident and decided to blame the Christians for this. A former prefect of the city named Flavian and his wife were amongst those unjustly punished for this. Flavian's face was horribly burned with a red-hot piece of metal. When he succumbed, his wife was taken outside the city and beheaded. These two Christian martyrs had two daughters, Viviana and Demetria. All their goods were not confiscated by Apronianus. For five months the two girls lived in terrible poverty, but their faith did not waver. Apronianus came to visit them, supposing that they would have by this time renounced Christ. Angered at their constancy, he summoned them to trial. In court Demetria spoke first. She boldly professed Christianity. The she fell down dead. A pagan woman named Rufina took the other girl into her home, instructed by the governor to make her forsake Christ. But nothing could disturb Viviana's composure. Apronianus sentenced her to be executed cruelly, ordering that the soldiers tie the saint to a pillar and scourge her with lead-loaded whips.

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Future Direction Subcommittee of the Supreme Council Polish National Catholic Church

The Solemnity of All Saints November 1, 2017

Dear Bishops, Very Rev. and Rev. Fathers, Deacons and Faithful of our Holy Church,

We come to You, O God, offering our most humble and heartfelt thanks for the Upcoming Events: PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
