This term is taken from the entrance antiphon of Mass of the third Sunday of Advent which says: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! Indeed the Lord is near.” This Sunday, the third rose-colored candle of the Advent wreath is lit. The rose color brightens up the season and tells us that our time of waiting is nearly over. It reminds us that God is about to do something wonderful for us, and we are joyfully anticipating its happening. Advent is a short, four-week season that steers us towards the coming of Christ into the world. The ways that Christ comes to us are many. As a liturgical season, Advent prepares us for the liturgical celebration of Christmas. Advent also strives to make us aware of the fact that Christ will come again at the end of time, as he promised, to bring God’s final judgment on the world. With our Advent journey already half way through, the Church gives us this Gaudete Sunday of Joy to help us realize what a great gift God is giving us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ. As his arrival at Christmas draws nearer, our hearts swell with joyful anticipation. God makes his dwelling with us. He has not left us orphans. He brings with him the wealth of his grace and blessings for each of us. Advent helps us to realize that God is always with us. At no time is he ever away from us. If we ever feel he is away, or distanced from him, then we ourselves have done something to cause that. Sin is what distances us from God. The good news is, however, that God waits for us as the good Father of the Prodigal Son. He waits to welcome us back with open arms. And once back in God’s embrace all that he has and is, is ours. The Filipino tradition of celebrating Simbang Gabi has begun. The observance of Simbang Gabi began in our parish this past Friday, December 15, and will continue each day, for nine days, through Saturday, December 23. Our parish Simbang Gabi coincides with the diocesan celebration, which takes place each day in a different parish church. We will host the diocesan Simbang Gabi in our church on Tuesday, December 19, followed by a pot luck reception in Bevan Hall. There will also be a potluck reception after the last mass of Simbang Gabi on Saturday, December 23. With the exception of Sunday, December 17, Simbang Gabi novena prayers will begin at 6:30pm, and mass will follow at 7:00pm. On Sunday, December 17, novena prayers will begin at 6:00pm and mass will begin at 6:30pm. Please note the change in the Sunday mass schedule next week. The masses at 5:00pm and 6:30pm will not take place. The observance of Christmas begins next Sunday evening, December 24, with mass at 4:00pm. The Children’s Choir of Our Lady of Las Vegas School will be singing at this mass. Also the school children will give their annual presentation of the Nativity. Plus, a surprise visitor may be stopping by. The Polish Choir will sing at the Polish masses at 10:00pm on Christmas Eve and at 1:30pm mass on Christmas Day. The Filipino Choir, under the direction of Mark Esguerra, our school music director, will sing at the 10:00am mass on Christmas Day. The Adoremus Schola, under the direction of David Kowaleski, our parish music director, will sing at the 12:00am Midnight Mass and at the 12:00noon Mass on Christmas Day. Mr. Harvey Flemming will play at the 8:00am on Christmas Day. The Lord is coming! Let us prepare our hearts to receive Him!
