One of the most important feasts of the Church is celebrated each year on December 8. It is the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This year, however, as happens every few years, the Second Sunday of Advent is also December 8. When this happens, the feast of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to the following Monday, December 9. So, this year the Second Sunday of Advent is on December 8 and the feast of the Immaculate Conception is being observed on December 9.
The meaning of the Immaculate Conception of Mary is very deep and profound. However, because the passage from Luke’s Gospel about the “Annunciation” is proclaimed at Mass, there is often a bit of confusion. The Annunciation is the announcement of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary that she was chosen by God to be the mother of the Messiah. The Immaculate Conception is the dogma of our Catholic Faith that Mary, at the first moment of her existence in her Mother’s womb (St. Ann), that she was graced by God to be free from original sin. Every human being is conceived with original after the fall of Adam and Eve from grace. Mary was given this singular privilege of immunity so that she could bear the Christ and never be at odds with God because of sin.
The Annual Diocesan Novena of Simbang Gabi Masses will be celebrated this year at various host parishes throughout the diocese. As we do every year, our parish have our own novena of Simbang Gabi from December 15 through December 23. Our day to host the Diocesan Simbang Gabi is on Tuesday, December 17 at 7:00pm, with potluck reception following the mass in the gym. A potluck reception will also be held following the mass on December 22nd. Please see the Simbang Gabi schedule listed on page 12 of this bulletin.
Everyone is very much aware of the incredible musical talents of our parish music director, David Kowaleski. Not only is David an accomplished pianist and organist, he is also a talented song writer. David enjoys writing, producing and performing all genres of music, but one of his specialties is religious and faith-based music.
This past year, David has written and produced eleven original new faith-based songs featuring the lead vocals of Kristina Guerrero, the very talented lead singer of our Adoramus Schola group. There is also one song which features background vocals provided by yours truly!
This new CD, released under the Stone Chalice label, is entitled Through a Stained Glass Window. It is a beautiful collection of newly composed music and lyrics allowing for deep reflection and joyful celebration of Christian/Catholic faith. The songs are wonderful to listen to with melodies that resonate in the heart and soul, and with profound lyrics that capture the essence of our faith in God.
The CD is $15.00 and now available in the parish office. It is also available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon.
