It is also known as “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete comes from which means REJOICE! In the second reading at mass this Sunday, St. Paul, in his first letter to the Thessalonians says:

“Rejoice always! Pray without ceasing!” (5:16)

This Sunday we light the third candle of the Advent wreath. The third candle is rose colored, indicating that our time of waiting is nearly over. Besides the rose candle, the priest wears a rose colored at mass. This is all to remind us that God is about to do something wonderful for us, and we are joyfully anticipating its happening.

Advent is a short season that is only four weeks long. It’s the season that steers us towards the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior to us. The greatest surprise of all was something that no one ever expected; that the savior coming to us would be God himself!

At this time of year, we hear carols almost everywhere. One of the most beautiful carols is O Holy Night. The words of this carol describe for us the condition of the world and the hope that the Savior brings. “O holy night, the stars are brightly shining. It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared and the soul felt its worth. The thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees…! Yes, oh world, fall on your knees! For God himself comes in the person of Christ to save us; to deliver us from our sinfulness; and, by the power of His grace, to lift us and heal us in body, mind and spirit. Advent reminds us of the coming of Christ.

The ways that Christ comes to us are many. He comes to us in the , in the reading of scripture, when we pray and when we gather in His Name. As a liturgical season, Advent prepares us to remember Christ’s coming at . Advent also strives to make us aware of the fact that Christ will come again at the end of time, as he promised, to bring God’s final judgment on the world.

With our Advent journey already half way through, the Church gives us this Gaudete Sunday of Joy to help us realize what a great gift God is giving us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ. As his arrival at Christmas draws nearer, let our hearts swell with joyful anticipation. God makes his dwelling with us. He has not left us orphans. He brings with him the wealth of his grace and blessings for each of us.

Advent also helps us to realize that God is always with us. At no time is he ever away from us. If we ever feel God is away, or that we are distanced from him, then we ourselves are the cause of that. Sin is what causes the distance between God and us to happen. None of us is immune from this either. We are all subject to temptations of sin. Every time we choose selfishly, we partner with Satan and we turn away from God. That is the choice we make. The good news is, however, that God waits for us. As the good Father of the Prodigal Son, God waits to welcome us back. And once back in God’s embrace all that he has and is, is ours.

So, as Gaudete Sunday proclaims: Let us rejoice in the Lord!

The Filipino tradition of celebrating Simbang Gabi, which normally begins on December 15 and runs through December 23, unfortunately will not take place this year because of all the restrictions with the Corona Virus. Even the diocesan celebration has been cancelled. We are hopeful that we will be able to celebrate Simbang Gabi next year. In the meantime, let’s everyone stay healthy and safe.

Last week, I announced that we still needed $49,000.00 to reach our parish 2020 CSA goal. I am happy to announce that this week we received some generous donations and we are now down to $23,000.00. I am extremely grateful for this very generous help. With a little over two weeks till the end of the year, hopefully we will reach our goal! Thank you so much!
