The Third Sunday of is known as “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete is a word that means REJOICE! This term is taken from the entrance antiphon of Mass of the third Sunday of Advent which says: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! Indeed the Lord is near.” This Sunday the third rose-colored candle of the Advent wreath is lit. The rose color brightens up the season and tells us that our time of waiting is coming to its completion.

Advent is a short, four week season that steers us towards the coming of Christ into the world. The ways that Christ comes to us are many. As a liturgical season, Advent prepares us for the liturgical celebration of . Advent also strives to make us aware of the fact that Christ will come again at the end of time, as he promised, to bring God’s final judgment on the world.

With our Advent journey already half way through, the Church gives us this Gaudete Sunday of Joy to help us realize what a great gift God is giving us in the person of his Son, Christ. As his arrival at Christmas draws nearer, our hearts swell with joyful anticipation. God makes his dwelling with us. He has not left us orphans. He brings with him the wealth of his grace and blessings for each of us.

Advent helps us to realize that God is always with us. At no time is he ever away from us. If we ever feel he is away, or distanced from him, then we ourselves have done something to cause that. Sin is what distances us from God. The good news is, however, that God waits for us as the good Father of the Prodigal Son. He waits to welcome us back with open arms. And once back in God’s embrace all that he has and is, is ours.

The Advent season offers us a perfect opportunity to experience God’s mercy offered to us especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is in this sacrament that God grants us forgiveness for our personal sins and brings us back into with Him. All of us are sinners, and we alienate ourselves from God through sinning. When we sin, we make a conscious choice, which injures our relationship with God and the Church. The more we make the conscious choice to sin, the farther away from God we move; and the farther away from God we move, the more we are apt to sin. The Sacrament of Reconciliation allows us to encounter God and experience his mercy as we own up to our sins, confess them and receive the cleansing absolution of God. It is this amazing encounter with our God that relieves us of the weight of guilt and sin.

God never expects us to be perfect. All he desires from us is to always try our best. When we do the best we can, even if we fall short, God is still pleased with us because of our sincerity in trying to do our best. It’s like when a child tries to draw a picture. He works on it very diligently and does the best he can. He then presents it to his mother. Even though the picture turns out terrible, mom loves it because it was her child who drew it and did his best. This is the way God sees us. He looks at our efforts. When he sees that we are trying our best, he is pleased with us, despite our shortcomings. That’s why God is always ready and willing to forgive us.

This week, on Wednesday, December 14, there will be an opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in our parish. Confessions will be from 9:00am to 11:00am and from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. What better gift to offer the Lord for his birthday than a pure and contrite heart; a heart filled with the joy of God’s grace.

Fr. Gerry

It's Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday! Light the third (rose-colored) candle on your Advent wreath. On Gaudete Sunday, the season of Advent shifts its focus. For the first two weeks of Advent, the focus can be summed up in the phrase, "The Lord is coming." But beginning with Gaudete Sunday, the summary might be, "The Lord is near." This shift is marked by a lighter mood and a heightened sense of joyous anticipation. Liturgically, the colors lighten as well. The priest usually wears rose-colored , a hue seen only on Gaudete Sunday and Laetare Sunday. In times when the focus of our anticipation is often on the negative and fearful, this celebration is a reminder that God who loves us is still in charge and that we await his coming not with fear, but with tremendous joy. —http://usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/advent/advent-december-11.cfm Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Coordinator: Julia Dodson 3050 Alta Drive | Las Vegas, NV 89107 Phone: 702-802-2300 Email: [email protected] 2016 - 2017 Schedule A full schedule can be found at www.ollvchurch.org Click on Faith Formation | Click on Becoming Catholic (RCIA) | Under Documents, click on Schedule
