This is the Third Sunday of . It is also known as “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete is , which means REJOICE! It comes from the entrance antiphon of Mass of the Third Sunday of Advent which says:

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! Indeed the Lord is near.”

This Sunday, the third, rose-colored candle of the Advent wreath is lit. The rose color brightens up the season and tells us that our time of waiting is nearly over. It reminds us that God is about to do something wonderful for us, and we are joyfully anticipating its happening.

Advent is a short, four-Sunday season that steers us towards the coming of Christ into the world. The ways that Christ comes to us are many. As a liturgical season, Advent prepares us for the liturgical celebration of Christmas. More importantly, however, Advent also strives to make us aware of the fact that Christ will come again at the end of time to bring God’s final judgment on the world.

With our Advent journey already half way through, the Church gives us this Gaudete Sunday of Joy to help us realize what a great gift God is giving us in the person of his Son, Christ. As his arrival at Christmas draws nearer, our hearts swell with joyful anticipation. God makes his dwelling with us. He has not left us orphaned. He brings with him the wealth of his grace and blessings for each of us.

Advent helps us also to realize that God is always with us. At no time is He ever away from us. If we ever feel God is away, or distanced from him, then we ourselves have done something to cause that. It is sin that distances us from God. The good news is, however, that God is patient and merciful, and He waits for us as the good Father of the Prodigal Son. He waits to welcome us back with open arms, and once back in God’s embrace, all that he has and is, is ours.

God never expects us to be perfect. All he desires from us is to always try our best. When we do the best we can, even if we fall short, God is still pleased with us because of our sincerity in trying to do our best. He looks at our efforts. When God sees that we are trying our best, He is pleased with us, despite our shortcomings. That’s why God is always ready and willing to forgive us and lets us try again. And that is reason to rejoice!

The Filipino tradition of celebrating Simbang Gabi begins in our parish this Sunday, December 15. Simbang Gabi (Filipino for "Night Mass") is a devotional nine-day series of Masses practiced by Filipino Catholics in the Philippines in anticipation of Christmas. The Simbang Gabi Masses in the Philippines are held daily, usually from December 16–24 and occur at different times of the day, but are primarily celebrated in the morning hours. On the last day of the Simbang Gabi in the Philippines, , the service is called Misa de Gallo, which is Spanish for "Rooster's Mass".

Here in the United States, Simbang Gabi is more often celebrated in the evening. Our celebration in our parish will be from December 15th through December 23rd. Mass will be celebrated each day with novena prayers one half hour before each mass. See the Our Lady of Las Vegas Simbang Gabi schedule for prayer and mass times on page 5 of this weekend’s bulletin.

There is also a diocesan observance of Simbang Gabi with mass celebrated in a different parish church each day. Our parish will host the diocesan Simbang Gabi on Tuesday, December 17 with Mass at 7:00pm. A potluck reception will follow in Bevan Hall. There will also be a potluck reception following Mass on Sunday, December 22. Following Mass on Monday December 23, the traditional burning of the prayer intentions will take place outside the church. Please consider joining us for one or for all of the Simbang Gabi Masses.

May these days of Advent cause joy in our hearts as we prepare to welcome Christ in our midst! Gaudete!
