Corpus Christi , 2014 Second Week of The word Advent is from the word adventus for "coming" and is associated with the four weeks of preparation for . Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until . It blends together a penitential spirit, very similar to , a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event. Since the 900s Advent has been considered the beginning of the Church year. 2014 Advent & Christmas Season Schedule Come, with us! Baptism of the Lord Saturday, January 10th Vigil at 5pm Sunday, January 11th Masses at 7am, 9am and 11am Special Times In Which We Live: Advent and the Year of Consecrated Life

1. The beginning of Advent marks the start of a new . Every year, following a three year cycle, during the Sunday liturgies we listen to the history of ’ life narrated by a different author. This year we will follow the guidance of St. Mark the Evangelist, the companion of St. Peter the Apostle. His Good News is the shortest of all the four and also the oldest one (written around 65 A.D.). Jesus, the Son of God, as portrayed by St. Mark, keeps His identity , concealing it in parables so that even the disciples fail to understand Him. All this is in keeping with a prophecy, which foretold the fate of the Messiah as the Suffering Servant. St. Mark invites us to discover Jesus not only as Savior of the world but as our personal Savior as well.

2. The start of Advent is also the beginning of the Year of Consecrated Life which will continue until 2, 2016. The special year dedicated to consecrated life was announced by Francis and is similar to previously themed years announced by such as the Year of the Priest (2009-2010). It marks the 50th anniversary of "Perfectae Caritatis," (“of the Perfect Love”), the Decree on the Adaptation and Renewal of Religious Life issued by the in 1965.

The Year of Consecrated Life focuses our attention on women and men, nuns, religious brothers and priests who were called to lead a special life according to the three evangelical counsels: poverty, chastity and obedience. Throughout the centuries, a multitude of ways were developed to realize these counsels: living in community or alone, wearing religious habit or lay dress, dedicating one’s life to education, work, foreign missions, health services, or to a contemplative life. Every religious order, every religious congregation, and each of its members has a special charism that enriches both the Church and the societies among which they live. There is 910,000 consecrated men and women in the world, more than twice the number of diocesan priests. The popular joke saying that even God does not know how many women’s religious congregations exist in the world only underlines the variety of treasures of consecrated life that permeates the Catholic Church.

Unfortunately, many faithful have a very limited view of the life and ministry of religious congregations. In an effort to help lay Catholics, especially the young, gain a deeper understanding of religious life, priests, brothers and women religious intend to open their convents, , abbeys and religious houses to the public on February 8, 2015. On 13, 2015, a worldwide special day of prayer is scheduled inviting people to join religious men and women for vespers, the rosary or .

As the community of Corpus Christi we also want to actively participate in celebrating this year. First, we will periodically say a special prayer during the Masses for the Year of Consecrated Life. We will ask God for new and good vocations to the consecrated life and for support of current members of religious orders and communities. We would also like to organize trips to nearby convents and cloisters during open house days and invite its members to visit our parish.

Many nuns, religious brothers and priests greatly impacted our lives in the past or perhaps recently. Let us not forget their dedication to the mission of the Church as catechists, sacristans, musicians, educators, spiritual mentors and confessors, as well as serving the Church in many other capabilities. If some of you would like to share with our parish community a testimonial of how nuns, religious priests or brothers impacted your life, please send them to me at the parish e-mail; [email protected]

Brothers and Sisters:

It is time, once again, for the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR). Please join me in heartfelt support of the 2014 appeal scheduled to take place on December 13 -14, 2014.

Your efforts are vital to its success.

Catholic of the United States initiated the RFR in 1988 to address the deficit in retirement funding among religious communities. Despite ongoing generosity to the annual collection, numerous communities continue to struggle to provide for their senior members. Proceeds from the collection offer supplemental support for bolstering retirement Wednesday, savings and for meeting such day-to-day needs , as prescription medications and nursing care. 7:00 P.M.

Many of us may recall a sister, brother, or religious order priest whose life and ministry had a profound impact on us. You likely have also witnessed the selfless dedication of religious serving in Catholic parishes, schools, hospitals, Corpus Christi Memories and social-service agencies. I invite you, then, either to host an RFR speaker at Mass or to Whether you’ve been a parishioner for a month, 5 years make the appeal yourself, sharing with or 25 years, we want your memories and/or thoughts of parishioners the contributions religious have what Corpus Christi has meant to you.
