This Sunday we observe the Third Sunday of . It is also known as “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete comes from which means REJOICE! The entrance antiphon for the Mass of this third Sunday of Advent reflects the joy in our hearts:

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! Indeed the Lord is near.”

This Sunday we light the third candle of the Advent wreath. The third candle is the rose colored candle, indicating that our time of waiting is nearly over. Besides the rose candle, you might even notice the priest wearing a rose colored at mass. This is all to remind us that God is about to do something wonderful for us, and we are joyfully anticipating its happening.

Advent is a short season that is only four weeks long. It’s the season that steers us towards the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior to us. The greatest surprise of all was something that no one ever expected; that the savior coming to us would be God himself!

The beautiful , O Holy Night, describes for us the condition of the world and the hope that the Savior brings. “O holy night, the stars are brightly shining. It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared and the soul felt its worth. The thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees…! Yes, oh world, fall on your knees, for God comes in the person of Christ to save us; to deliver us from our nonsense and foolishness; and, by the power of His grace, to lift us out of our sins. Advent reminds us of the coming of Christ.

The ways that Christ comes to us are many. As a liturgical season, Advent prepares us for the liturgical celebration of Christmas. Advent also strives to make us aware of the fact that Christ will come again at the end of time, as he promised, to bring God’s final judgment on the world.

With our Advent journey already half way through, the Church gives us this Gaudete Sunday of Joy to help us realize what a great gift God is giving us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ. As his arrival at Christmas draws nearer, let our hearts swell with joyful anticipation. God makes his dwelling with us. He has not left us orphans. He brings with him the wealth of his grace and blessings for each of us.

Advent also helps us to realize that God is always with us. At no time is he ever away from us. If we ever feel he is away, or distanced from him, then we ourselves have done something to cause that. Sin is what causes the distance between God and us to happen. None of us is immune from this either. We are all subject to temptations of selfishness and evil. Every time we choose selfishly, we partner with the Evil One, and we turn away from God. That is the choice we make. The good news is, however, that God waits for us. As the good Father of the Prodigal Son, God waits to welcome us back with open arms. And once back in God’s embrace, all that he has and is, is ours.

So, as Gaudete Sunday proclaims: Let us rejoice in the Lord!

The Filipino tradition of celebrating Simbang Gabi has begun in our parish. It began on December 15, and will continue for nine days, through Sunday, December 23. There is also a diocesan celebration of Simbang Gabi which takes place each day in a different parish church. We will host the diocesan Simbang Gabi in our church this Sunday, (today) December 16. After the 6:30pm mass, a pot luck reception will be held in Bevan Hall. There will also be a potluck reception after the last mass of Simbang Gabi on Sunday, December 23. Prayers each weekday of Simbang Gabi will be at 6:30pm followed by mass at 7:00pm. Next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, December 22 and 23, Simbang Gabi novena prayers will begin at 6:00pm, and mass will follow at 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome to join in this special Advent tradition.

REJOICE! Today has traditionally been called “Gaudete Sunday.” The Latin tag is derived from Paul’s appeal in the second reading to “rejoice always in the Lord,” and the text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God’s work.

Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy.

This, we are assured on all sides, is “the season of joy.” Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
