The census is a complete registration of all inhabitants of a country. Here, not only the people are counted, but captures detailed information on the living conditions of the people. In addition, the existing buildings of a country are counted. The results are then used not only for one-time statistical analysis but rather as a basis for updating of all statistical quantities until the next census date.

While in the past 1987 "people, professional, building, housing and employment census" yet all 61.2 million inhabitants were interviewed (full survey), in 2011 for the first time in German history, a "register-based census“ was conducted. Note that the data that already exist in the administrative registers used and complemented by a combination of censuses and sample surveys were. As a result, two thirds of Germany’s population did not have to be questioned in 2011 to be coming at all levels to detailed results.
