Bleeding may be the result of an injury, medical condition, or certain . Some medical conditions that CAUTION PREVENTION result in bleeding are: ulcers, cancer and urinary tract infections. Examples of medications include: aspirin, motrin/ibutropin and coumadin. ƒ Try to prevent Falls (See Fact Sheet No. 11) The following injuries might cause bleeding: ƒ Be Careful using Knives and Scissors ƒ Falls or blows from tripping, car accidents, sports ƒ Do not pick up Sharp Objects like broken glass - injuries etc… use a broom ƒ Sharp objects that puncture the skin, such as knives, ƒ Shave when alert and not in a rush scissors, nails, pencils etc… ƒ Stay away from animals unless you know they are ƒ Shaving cuts friendly. WHAT TO DO CALL THE DOCTOR Call the doctor or the nurse if: ƒ Clean all MINOR cuts. ƒ The wound is large or deep, even if it is not ƒ Wash you hands with water and soap bleeding a lot. ƒ Wash the cut with mild soap and water ƒ Stitches might be needed ƒ Remove LOOSE dirt or objects from the wound ƒ The wound is on the face or reaches to the ƒ Put pressure on the wound to stop bleeding ƒ The person was bitten by an animal or a human ƒ Once bleeding stops, use antibacterial ointment (if ordered by doctor) ƒ The wound looks infected ƒ the wound if it is likely to get dirty ƒ it is red, warm, painful, throbs, pusses or ƒ For larger, more serious cuts swollen ƒ Apply pressure directly or with a ƒ It is accompanied by a fever ƒ Seek medical attention immediately ƒ red lines spread from wound towards the heart ƒ Observe for signs of shock ƒ The person’s last tetanus shot was more than 5 ƒ Check that they are up-to-date on their Tetanus years ago vaccine
