Jesus is the Bread of Life come down from heaven, sent by our loving Father! Joy of joys!!! This week on Tuesday, we celebrate the feast day of St. Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney, who loved Jesus in the Eucharist and wanted everyone to understand this profound love of God for all of us. St. , a French priest and pastor of a parish in Ars, France, was born in 1786 and died on the August 4, 1859. He so profoundly believed and lived this truth: “Without the Holy Eucharist there would be no happiness in this world; life would be insupportable. When we receive Holy Communion, we receive our joy and our happiness. … In the presence of this beautiful Sacrament, we are like a person dying of thirst by the side of a river - he would only need to bend his head; like a person still remaining poor, close to a great treasure - he need only stretch out his hand. He who communicates loses himself in God like a drop of water in the ocean. They can no more be separated.” How close God wants and is to us! St. John Vianney became internationally notable for his priestly and pastoral work in his parish of Ars because of the radical spiritual transformation of the community and its surroundings, a transformation God brought about through the grace of St. John Vianney’s saintly life, mortification, his persevering ministry in the sacrament of confession, and his ardent devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, to the Blessed Mary and to . St John Vianney’s sermons have inspired generations of Catholics. Many find his writings and sermons easy to read and simple to understand. He was a common man with a simple education. And yet the sermons St John Vianney delivered were and still are profoundly insightful for the educated and uneducated alike. St. John Vianney saw the beauty of Jesus as our Bread of Life in a very practical and real way. Jesus feeds our souls. “The soul hungers for God, and nothing but God can satiate it. Therefore He came to dwell on earth and assumed a Body in order that this Body might become the Food of our souls.” St. John Vianney used a beautiful example of what is needed in all houses: a place where the provisions of the family are kept — the store-room. “Well,” St. John Vianney said while preaching in church, “in this house there is a store-room. Do you see the tabernacle? If the souls of Christians were asked, ‘What is that?’ your souls would answer, ‘It is the store-room.’” So what are we to do? “I throw myself at the foot of the Tabernacle like a dog at the foot of his Master.” And when we are not close to the Church, St. John Vianney gives some practical advise, so that even “When you awake in the night, transport yourself quickly in spirit before the Tabernacle, saying: ‘Behold, my God, I come to adore You, to praise, thank, and love you, and to keep you company with all the .’” Whenever possible, even daily, we should worthily receive Communion, when “the Adorable Blood of Jesus really flows in our veins and His Flesh is really blended with ours.” You see, “Every Consecrated Host is made to burn Itself up with love in a human heart.” Whether in Sacramental or Spiritual Communion, St. John Vianney encourages us: “O my children, how beautiful will a soul be in eternity that has worthily and often received the good God! The Body of Our Lord will shine through our body, His adorable Blood through our blood; our soul will be united to the Soul of Our Lord during all eternity. There it will enjoy pure and perfect happiness.” Jesus in the Tabernacle and in the Blessed Sacrament is with us: “If you are in difficulties and sorrows, He will comfort and relieve you. If you are sick, He will either cure you or give you strength to suffer so as to merit Heaven. If the devil, the world, and the flesh are making war upon you, He will give you the weapons with which to fight, to resist, and to win victory. If you are poor, He will enrich you with all sorts of riches for time and eternity.” How simple and practical is St. John Vianney’s advice, gleaned from Jesus’ words in Scripture: “God commands you to pray, but forbids you to worry.” Every Wednesday from 5:30 pm to 7pm, there is an opportunity to pray in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament and go to Confession. First Fridays throughout the day and sometimes in the evenings also give us an opportunity for loving adoration before Jesus, the Blessed Sacrament. St. John Vianney encourages us: “If we really loved the good God, we should make it our joy and happiness to come and spend a few moments to adore Him, and ask Him for the grace of forgiveness; and we should regard those moments as the happiest of our lives.” At the Day of Judgment we shall see the Flesh of Our Lord shine through the glori- fied body of those who have received Him worthily on earth…. After Communion, if you are asked, “What are you carrying away to your home?” we might answer, in the words of St. John Vianney, “ carrying away Heaven.” St. John Vianney, pray for us!

Customs surrounding wedding rites are often in tension with our liturgical tradition. Sometimes practices are almost forced on engaged couples. Anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows how quickly the invoices expand. A hundred dollars here, a hundred there, often for non‑essentials, when more deeply traditional practices, like an expression of charity for the poor, fall by the wayside. One such practice often labeled as “deeply Please consider joining the September 22-27 Joliet traditional” is the aisle runner for the bride.
