Today, Christ enters the Jordan to wash away the sin of the world. John himself testifies that this is why he has come: “Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world.” Today a servant lays his hands on the Lord, a man lays his hand on God, John lays his hand on Christ, not to forgive but to receive forgiveness. Today as the psalmist prophesied: “The voice of the Lord is heard above the waters. What does the voice say? This is my beloved Son, in whom well pleased.”

Today as parishioners under the patronage of Saint Andrew, let us be renewed through the sprinkling rite and accept the role of pointing out that Jesus is truly present in our communi- ties! Invite others to understand the love, mercy and grace that Jesus can offer to those who follow Him as Andrew did.

RUMINATIONS BY FR. PAT

You probably can guess, since I grew up attending Mass at St. Anthony, that when I was Baptized, I was Baptized at the same Baptismal Font that is present in the front at St. Andrew – Monongahela. It was June 14, 1964. Don’t be silly, I don’t remember, but I do have a Bap- tismal Certificate!

When people think of Baptism, they think (rightly) of Original Sin. If Baptism is the re- moval of Original Sin, does it mean that Jesus had Original Sin, since He was Baptized? The answer is no. He did not have Original Sin. So why was He Baptized? While Original Sin in an integral part of the theology of Baptism, it isn’t the only part.

Besides the removal of Original Sin, another integral part of Baptism is the Death and New Birth of the individual. Through the waters of Baptism, we die to our old life of sin and arise a new creation. If sin was the only thing involved, the Baptism of would have been enough. Jesus showed us that there is more to a life with God. It is more than just getting rid of sin. Baptism entails a transformation of the whole of the person into a new Creation in Christ. St Paul states in 2 Corinthians: So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. He also states in Romans: Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Jesus was teaching that confessing sins is not enough. A drastic change of heart and Life- style was needed. Go beyond the parties, the pictures, the gowns, etc. See the new life that can only come from Christ. Die to your old life of Sin and become a new creation. THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 12, 2020

WOW! Are YOU being called to go deeper? THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 12, 2020 DID YOU KNOW!!

St. Andrew was a fisherman who lived in during the time of Jesus. He often followed John the Baptist and listened to his teachings. One day, John saw Jesus walking along the road. John said to his followers, “Behold the Lamb of God.” He told his followers to go and talk to Jesus. He wanted them to know that Jesus was the One for whom they had been waiting for. Andrew and another followed Jesus and spent an afternoon with him. Early the next day Andrew found Simon peter, his older , and told him, “We have found the .”

Both men gave up their work as fishermen to become apostles of Jesus. Andrew was one of the first to be called. He seemed to take delight in bringing others to Jesus. Andrew was the one who told Jesus about the little boy who had loaves of bread and the fish, the beginning of a meal that fed more than five thousand people. It was Andrew and Philip whom the Greeks approached when they wanted to see Jesus. These events indicate that Andrew was a man who was easy to approach, a man you could trust.

Like other apostles, Andrew became a missionary. He preached about Jesus in the area around the . Tradition tells us he preached in northern , , and (now the southern part of .)

Andrew died as a . Tradition says that in Greece he was tied to a cross shaped like the letter X. Ever since then, a cross in the shape of an X has been called St. Andrew’s cross.

The name “Andrew” is a Greek name meaning “courageous” or “manly.” St. Andrew lived up to his name. St. Andrew, pray that we live up to the name “ Christian”!

Did you know that St. Andrew the Apostle can help with your party or get together needs? Our three campuses offer you distinct options that will be perfect for whatever event you are planning.

In Charleroi: Marian Hall - A beautiful hall with full kitchen and table seating with round tables for 90 and rectangle tables for 250 - 275 people. This facility is perfect for baby and bridal showers, anniversary and birthday celebrations, or your next charity benefit.

In Monongahela: Parish Park - This gorgeous venue, home to our Summerfest , offers a large food booth area with 4 stalls and is equipped with freezers, refrigerators, fryers, and barbeque pits. The covered pavilion provides table seating for 180 - 200 people and its adjoined to the indoor café. The café has additional seating, bathrooms, and a spacious kitchen.
