Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (815) 886-4165 ext. 317 My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

As one person put it, “ Francis’ hymn to love and family life is more like a country song than a Disney tune”! Last month, Pope Francis published His Apostolic Exhortation on Love in the Family entitled Amoris Laetitia, meaning “the Joy of Love.” After a two-year process of discussion on the question of the family in today’s world and of input from people across the globe, including two meetings or Synods of from around the world, Pope Francis wrote his postsynodal apostolic exhortation on the family, where there is passion and devotion, but also heartache and sweat, just like a good ol’ country song! The “magic” he wrote about is not momentarily sparkly, but the result of prayer, grace, hard work and a willingness to apologize — time and time again. Pope Francis wrote, “Committing oneself exclusively and definitively to another person always involves a risk and a bold gamble.” But the payoff is huge! The Christian family is Good News indeed! The exhortation speaks about the family's strengths and gifts, and also the contemporary challenges faced by families throughout the world. It encourages married couples, families, and pastoral ministers to accompany and care for families and others in need of the Lord’s mercy and healing. It includes an extended reflection on love and what it means in the day-to-day reality of marriage and family life. This exhortation gets into the nitty-gritty business of life when a man and a woman leave their parents’ home and try to make one of their own, and speaks to the whole arc of married life from new and exciting young love to old age, sitting on the porch watching the grandkids play. “Young love needs to keep dancing toward the future with immense hope,” he wrote, and the “path to the porch won’t be easy,” but “each crisis has a lesson to teach us; we need to learn how to listen for it with the ear of the heart.” This exhortation is directed toward the whole Church — it is addressed to Bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated persons, Christian married couples and all the lay faithful, and in particular, to remind married couples of their call and mission in the family — and is worthy of a reflective reading by all of us. While realistic about late nights and colic, this papal document is lyrical in its reflections on the blessings and challenges of welcoming children into families. Pope Francis invites readers to join him standing in awe of God’s gift of children, marveling that “God allows parents to choose the name by which he himself will call their child for all eternity.” Of course, Pope Francis says, “No family drops down from heaven perfectly formed,” so all must learn to grow together, including by making frequent use of the words, “Thank you,” “please” and “sorry,” spoken with a tenderness that is a virtue “often overlooked in our world of frenetic and superficial relationships.” He wrote, “The right words, spoken at the right time, daily protect and nurture love.” These are especially difficult times for understanding the fullness of the gift of family life. Of course, family life always has been challenging, the pope wrote — just read the Bible, which “is full of families, births, love stories and family crises.” So much of the confusion we face today is based in the crisis of the identity of the human person. Today’s difficulties have come from the Industrial Revolution which brought certain blessings, but also began to pull the family apart by taking the father away for a great amount of time from the family, and it began seeing a person as someone who produces, acquires and consumes things instead of as primarily a member of a family. The Sexual Revolution did a similar thing for mothers, pulling them away from family life, and added the destructive elements of so called free-love, the pornography industry, the contraceptive pill, no-fault divorce, abortion, human embryonic stem cell research, fatherlessness and same-sex “unions.” In other word, the Sexual Revolution separated marriage from sexuality, and sexuality from love. The human person was understood as someone whose meaning came not just from acquiring things, but from acquiring pleasure. Commitment, especially that of marriage, was seen as the enemy of pleasure. Yet “marriage” isn’t simply a label that can be attached to different types of relationships. Instead, “marriage” reflects a deep reality – the reality of the unique, fruitful, lifelong union that is only possible between a man and a woman. The body is part of the full and complete personal reality of the human being. Gender matters for marriage because the body matters for love. My body is not simply “the shape of my skin.” Instead, my identity as a person (my “I”) is inseparable from the reality of my body – a body-person. As John Paul II said, the body reveals the person. It is a deeply personal reality, not just a biological fact. Just as oxygen and hydrogen are essential to water, sexual difference is essential to marriage. The attempt to “redefine” marriage to include two persons of the same sex denies the reality of what marriage is. It is as impossible as trying to “redefine” water to include oxygen and nitrogen. In the end, the Pope’s “country song” about family includes the “twang” of yearning for that perfect, forever love. That yearning, present in most people from every culture and religion, shows that a stable, faithful union is what responds to human nature and to God’s plan for humanity. May we, as members of families, never lose the yearning for that perfect, forever love, that has it’s ultimate source and goal in the unity of God’s love within the Holy Trinity.

Journey Of Faith

We are on a long and eventful journey. Today’s readings for Trinity Sunday succinctly cover the depth and breadth of our human travels.

The very beginnings of our journey are revealed in the reading from Proverbs. God’s plan filled with divine wisdom was born before the earth was made. In today’s , Jesus speaks of his own personal journey. He has come from the Father and will return to the Father. Only then will the Advocate—the Spirit of Truth—take us onward.

This does not diminish the fact that the journey will be hard. The very setting of the Gospel is the night before Jesus died. As Paul writes to the Romans, “[W]e even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4).

Ultimately, our human journey is modeled by the Holy Trinity—a family of love among Father, Son, and Spirit that we are all called to emulate. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. May 22, 2016 Page Seven

8th Grade Field Trip on Friday May 13!

From the train ride to downtown Chicago, the visit to Willis Tower Walk Out, the Blue Man Group Show, and a relaxing ride on the Chicago River and Lake Michigan via the Wendella Boats, the 8th grade students enjoyed great scenery, great food and great fellowship.

We are very proud of 8th grader Katie Nguyen. Katie will receive a scholarship from Joliet Catholic Academy for being high Scorer on the Entrance Exam. She is the first recipient in nine years of the Joliet Diocese Catholic Woman's Club scholarship in the amount of $3,200. Katie represented St. Andrew the Apostle School in the Illinois State Science Fair on May 13th. Katie has also been selected to participate in the Integrated Science program this summer at the Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA).

Katie Nguyen represented SAS at the State Science Fair on May 13. Her parents, , and Mrs. Johnson were all there to support Katie. Mrs. Nguyen shared their adventure with us...

"We had a wonderful trip downstate accompanying Katie to 2016 State Science Exposition, which took place at Millikin University in Decatur, IL during May 13-14. Katie coolly delivered her research paper entitled “Hard Water Is Not Ice” and won a Silver Award among some 1,500 participants across Illinois.

In addition to her individual award, Katie also brought home a special award for St. Andrew School. The school award states: “The Illinois Junior Academy of Science awards the Dr. Lyell J. Thomas Memorial Award to St. Andrew The Apostle – Romeoville for supporting outstanding student research in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at the IJAS State Exposition.”

Many thanks to Mrs. Johnson for her guidance, and also to Mrs. Lifka and all other teachers for your support and encouragement."

We are always proud of our students who strive to achieve their very best. Great , Katie!
