Page Four February 28, 2021 THE THREE BASIC LENTEN PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF ST. DISCIPLINES Holy Joseph, guardian of Jesus , : Expresses our desire to find happiness in God rather than in the husband of the Blessed Mother and patron of the satisfaction of our physical needs. The Catholic Church, we pray to you for guidance this control we gain over our appetites helps “Year of ” proclaimed by us recognize more deeply that all true Francis. and lasting pleasure comes from God. Knowing this we are freed to gratefully accept food You have showed us by your loving ways, the and savor it, or to avoid or limit foods that we know value of work and the joys of fatherhood. By are unhealthy for us. Through fasting, our relationship to ourselves is reoriented toward God. teaching God’s Son to do the will of His Father you have given us the path to do the same. By ALMSGIVING: Provides assistance to the poor your example, you have encouraged us to accept among us and helps us recognize God others as they are, without exception. as the true source off our security. Property and wealth exercise less To you, Saint Joseph, our heavenly Father control over us hen we give away or share our wealth out of love for God entrusted his only Son, Jesus Christ, to your tender and for others. Almsgiving is a way of care and upbringing. In you, our Blessed Mother bringing our relationship to others into the orbit of Mary placed her love and trust. Christ’s love. Through your mentoring, Jesus Christ became man. PRAYER: Changes our relationship to God. Through prayer, we admit our need for a power that is greater than ourselves. We praise you and ask of you to We acknowledge our limitations and let defend us and our loved ones go of the drive to control everything. In from every evil and guide us with the process, we open ourselves to all your grace and mercy. that God has to offer us.

Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.

Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self- discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).

In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics. Page Five February 28, 2021

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor”. Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.

Your almsgiving to St. Vincent dePaul will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Thank you to everyone who has already pledged a gi to the 2021 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Every gi, large or small, brings us closer to our parish’s 2020 CMAA goal of $58,200.

If you have yet to make your gi, please prayerfully reflect on how you can best support the CMAA. If we raise more than our goal, 70% of the amount over the goal will be returned to us for our use. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish.

Our pastor recently mailed a pledge envelope to everyone in our parish. Please either return it, or the pledge card you received from the diocese, in the mail. You may also make a secure gi online at jolietdioceseappeal.org or text DONATE to 815-205-1949.

Catholic Relief Services Collection

Laetare Sunday, March 14, 2021

Dear and Sisters in Christ,

On Laetare Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Lent (March 14th), our diocese will take up the Catholic Relief Services Collection. Your support of this collection serves Jesus in the guise of the poor and vulnerable in some of the most marginalized communities in our world. Catholic Relief Services was founded in 1943 by the Catholic of the United States to serve World War II survivors in Europe. Since then, with the generous support of our parishioners, CRS has expanded and served over 130 million people in more than 100 countries across five continents. It is the official international humanitarian agency of the Church in the United States. This past year during the global pandemic, CRS is responding in the world’s most vulnerable communities; distributing soap, hygiene kits and personal protection equipment, sharing prevention messages that help minimize risk, and ensuring access in these communities to food and clean water. For over 75 years, their mission has been to assist impoverished and disadvantaged people overseas, working in the spirit of Catholic social teaching to promote the sacredness of human life and the dignity of the human person. They serve people based solely on need, regardless of their race, religion or ethnicity. Within the United States, CRS engages Catholics to live their faith in solidarity with the poor and suffering people of the world. Your support of this collection makes a difference for so many around the globe.

Paz y bien, Most Reverence Ronald A. Hicks of Joliet
