Hallelujah! The Lord is risen from the dead!!! Hallelujah! In awe and wonder, we hear the words Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany after her brother Lazarus had died and was buried four days in the tomb, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (Jn 11, 25-26). These words of Jesus beautifully displayed in a mosaic are highlighted above the main altar of the Church of St. Lazarus in the village of Bethany (see picture to the right): I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE. This present Catholic church, with mosaics depicting the events that occurred here, was built in 1954. Architect Antonio Barluzzi contrasted the sadness of death with the joy of resurrection by designing a crypt-like, windowless church, into which light floods from the large oculus in its dome. The little village of Bethany, on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives about 3 miles from Jerusalem, was a favourite place of rest and refuge for Jesus (the original village was probably higher up the hill to the west of the tomb of Lazarus). Here Jesus knew the intimacy and friendship of his friends Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Many pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem would find this Bethany a place of rest and comfort, especially those who were sick and travelling to Jerusalem for prayers and healing. And here, in the cemetery just below the village not far from the current day Catholic Church, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. At right is a picture of the entrance to the tomb, and below it, the stairs that lead to the tomb’s vestibule, with the burial chamber to the lower right. And below that is a picture of one of the pilgrims on our Holy Land Pilgrimage entering the burial chamber this past February. Today’s pilgrims enter from the street down a flight of 24 well-worn and uneven steps to a vestibule. Three more steps lead to the burial chamber, little more than six feet long. Tradition says Jesus stood in the vestibule to call Lazarus from the grave. When Lazarus was dying, as John’s Gospel (11:1-44) recounts, his sisters sent for Jesus. But Jesus delayed his arrival until four days after Lazarus had been buried, “so that the Son of God may be glorified”. Arriving at the tomb, Jesus called: “LAZARUS, COME OUT!” To the amazement of mourners who had witnessed the burial, the dead man walked out. This miracle confirmed the determination of the religious leaders in Jerusalem to have Jesus put to death. A week before the crucifixion, at dinner in the house of Simon the Leper in Bethany, Lazarus’ and Martha’s sister Mary took a jar of expensive ointment and poured it over Christ’s feet — an act he saw as the anointing of his body for burial. (John 12:1-8). What an amazing grace to be at the place Jesus proclaimed: “Lazarus, come out!” Of course, Lazarus was brought back to this life, not the resurrected life, but what a powerful witness he was to the truth that Jesus is the resurrection and the life! Pilgrims have been drawn to this place of Lazarus’ resurrection because they see how it prefigured the resurrection of Christ, and heralded their own return from the grave. Since 2005, Bethany, in the West Bank, has been cut off from Jerusalem by Israel’s separation wall. So what used to be a 10-minute drive from the Mount of Olives to Bethany now requires a lengthy detour. So much has changed since Jesus walked that part of the world! But one thing certainly has not — He still is the RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE, and He still lives calling us to a new life with Him already here and now, and also with Him forever on the last day. Life is a pilgrimage filled with lengthy detours. But through them all, Jesus calls us to new life. Hallelujah! The Lord is risen as He promised! He is alive! Hallelujah!

Jednocześnie pragnę podzielić się z Wami wspaniałą nowiną. Jak doskonale wiecie, trzy tygodnie temu zakończyła działalność nasza polska kawiarenka, która odbywała się w każdą trzecia niedzielę miesiąca po naszych Mszach św. rodzinnych. Ideą tego dzieła było przedłużenie Stołu Eucharystycznego i stworzenie okazji do lepszego zapoznania się z innymi członkami naszej wspólnoty, budowanie nowych znajomości i przyjaźni, a także stworzenie przestrzeni służącej lepszej integracji wspólnoty. Jakby efektem ubocznym działalności kawiarenki były fundusze, które zasilały działalność naszego Polskiego Duszpasterstwa. W latach poprzednich, fundusze te pozwoliły nam między innymi na: zakup mikrofonów dla naszego chórku dziecięcego (ok. $1000), zakup kwiatów i dekoracji na wiele różnych okazji, organizację przepięknego Grobu Pańskiego, obraz dla Księdza Biskupa w dniu koronacji a także wiele innych drobnych rzeczy, które były potrzebne do zorganizowania tej doniosłej i historycznej uroczystości. W bieżącym roku zebraliśmy 2536 dolarów (wrzesień 300$, październik 420$, listopad 460$,grudzień 400$, styczeń 315$, luty 400$, marzec 241$). Wydaliśmy 1022.88 (kwiaty na Wszystkich Świętych $98, Kwiaty do M.B. $14.99, Anioły-świeczniki $372, Mikołaj dla ministrantów $394.85, Mikołaj dla dzieci $102, dekoracje na Boże Narodzenie do M.B. Częstochowskiej $41.04), a pozostała suma $1513.12 została zdeponowana na koncie parafialnym i dalej będzie służyła potrzebom Polskiego Duszpasterstwa. Już dziś antycypujemy koszt 610$ za nowe naczynia liturgiczne i jest to nasz wkład w większą ogólno-parafialną składkę, która mam na celu wymianę naczyń liturgicznych w kościele. W tym miejscu jeszcze raz bardzo serdecznie chciałbym podziękować wszystkim prowadzącym naszą kawiarenkę za ich trud i oddanie, wszystkim piekącym za wspaniałe, przepyszne ciasta i desery, a także wszystkim klientom naszej kawiarenki za zaangażowanie, wsparcie i budowanie wspólnoty na Andrzejowie. Polish Café

Three weeks ago, we had the last session of Polish Café, which is a monthly community-building event that follows Polish Family Masses on the third Sunday of the month. One of the fruits of that event are funds that support Polish Ministry. Thanks to them, we were able to do many wonderful things for the Polish community as well as for the whole St. Andrew’s Parish Family. In the past years we were able to purchase microphone system for Polish children choir (around $1000), sponsor flowers and decorations for many occasions, support the Jesus’ Tomb project, sponsor the gift for Bishop during Coronation ceremony and support the preparation for that historic event in the life of our parish. This year we have collected $2536. Our expenses were $1022.88 (All Saints flowers $98, Flowers for OLC $14.99, Angel candlesticks $372, St. Nick for altar servers $309.85, St Nick for Children $102, Christmas decorations for OLC $41.04) and remaining balance of $1513.12 has been deposited on the Parish account and will serve the needs of Polish Community. We an- ticipate the participation in the Parish collection for the new Sacred Vessels and de- cided to contribute $610 to that collection. I would like to express my gratitude to all Café leaders, our wonderful bakers and all participants. May God bless you for everything you do for our community. Fr. ESPERANZA RESTAURADA Hoy, los cristianos de todo el mundo se reúnen para celebrar el aspecto central de su fe —que el Señor Jesús sufrió, murió y resucitó de entre los muertos para dar vida nueva a todos los que creen. ¿Qué diferencia puede hacer la Pascua en nuestra vida? Todo lo que la Pascua puede traer se resume en una palabra: esperanza. Imagina que eres uno de los se- guidores de Jesús de Nazaret, por el que renunciaste a todo, pusiste toda tu confianza y pensabas que te con- duciría del miedo a la libertad —pero murió de la manera más horrible posible. Lo clavaron en una cruz, donde parecía que la esperanza misma dio su último suspiro. ¿Te has sentido así alguna vez —que la esperanza se acabó? Para muchos que perdieron un buen trabajo, su cónyuge por la muerte o el divorcio, un hijo por las dro- gas o la enfermedad, parece que ya no hay esperanza.
