ANDREW THE APOSTLE PARISH

Prayer to Saint Andrew the Apostle

O Glorious Saint Andrew, you were the first to recognize and follow the Lamb of God. With your friend Saint , you remained with for that day, for your entire life, and now throughout eternity. As you led your to and many others after Him, draw us also to Him. Teach us to lead others to Christ solely out of love for Him and dedication in His service. Help us to learn the lesson of the cross and to carry our daily crosses without complaint so that they may carry us to Jesus. Amen.

ANDREW THE APOSTLE Thoughts by: REV KEV It is almost Christmas! That thought can fill our hearts with HIGH anticipation. Yet during this Pandemic, we also may not be feeling as excited, but rather feeling more anxious, questioning and fearful. I invite each of us to open our hearts and trust in God. Like the that we hear this weekend of the proclaiming to Mary that she will be the Mother of God.

Can you imagine how nervous and anxious Mary and must have felt during her last days of her pregnancy and they would have to travel alone to the distant area of Bethlehem! WOW!

I invite each of us to reflect on the words of the opening collect of the Liturgy. Know of the Grace that can fill our hearts as we trust in God as Mary & Joseph did. Remember the reason for the Season, that Jesus came to save us through his Passion, Death & Resurrection.

Pour forth we beseech you, O lord your grace into our hearts that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son was made known by the message of and Angel, may his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection!!!!

May this year 2020 find each of us in prayer as we trust with God’s help, we too will celebrate Christmas. Yes, this year may not be what we anticipated or come to expect, but we will be able to let the WORD OF GOD come into out lives and home to offer a Renewed sense of Joy, Peace and Hope!

Remember that the Manger Baby Jesus laid in on Christmas will be like the Cross that Jesus will be nailed to!

Ruminations by: Fr. Pat

This week we will be celebrating Christmas and the Season of Christmas. Today is Christ born; today the Savior has ap- peared; today the sing, the rejoice; today the righteous rejoice, saying: Glory to God in the highest. Alle- luia! The word “Christmas,” as you might guess, comes from the phrase “Christ’s Mass.” It may have come from the Old English Cristes Maesse. Why do we have Christmas in December? The tells us that the shepherds tended their flock at night. It is sug- gested that the time of Jesus’ birth may have been in the Spring. Whatever the birth date of Jesus, it may have coincided with the , March 25. There was a tradition that the Annunciation was in March, so…nine months later is December. Another issue to consider were the pagan celebrations of the Winter Solstice. The Winter Solstice is the day where there is the shortest time between the sun rising and the sun setting. To pagans this meant that they knew that the days would start getting lighter and longer and the nights would become shorter – marking a change in the seasons. To celebrate people had a mid- winter to celebrate the sun “winning” over the darkness of winter. The Roman Festival of Saturnalia took place be- tween December 17th and 23rd and honored the Roman god Saturn. The Romans also thought that the Solstice took place on December 25th. It's also thought that in 274 the Roman emperor Aurelian created “Dies Natalis Solis Invicti” (meaning “birthday of the unconquered sun”) also called “Sol Invictus” and it was held on December 25th. Some say that these pagan festivals were “Christianized” as people were baptized and raised in the Faith. Think about it this way, instead of the pagan festivals of the sun, Christians celebrated the festival of the Son. Advent looked to the end of the world, but Christmas looked to the beginning of new life, Jesus, the . Also, if you didn’t know, at one time in the Church’s history the Season of Advent was a mini Lent. Just like Lent, there was . Christmas was the day that the fast ended and the feasting began. However you look at the Season, look at it through the eyes of faith. Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is and Lord. 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 20, 2020

ANDREW THE APOSTLE PARISH EVENTS As we continue to face the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, please take a moment to review the steps taken by St. Andrew the Apostle Parish.

These are the protocols mandated by the CDC, Commonwealth of PA, and the Diocese of Pittsburgh: All individuals who enter the Church for any reason (such as private prayer, the Celebrations of Mass or Confession), MUST WEAR A MASK, covering their nose and mouth. Masks are available at all entrances. All are asked to PLEASE USE HAND SANITIZER upon entering the church building. All are asked to be attentive to the seating restrictions, sitting at least 6 feet from anyone else in the pew, the exception being that you can sit in closer proximity to the people you came with (i.e. spouses, family members, etc.). We are allowed to seat 50% of our seating capacity. Be attentive to those pews taped off.

Additional steps we are facilitating here at St. Andrew the Apostle: We have instituted Pandemic Porters, who help the parish ensure Safety Compliance and Accountability. All clergy have been wearing masks to distribute Communion. While you may exit the church by any door, you will find that each church will only have ONE set of doors opened: Charleroi - please use the main doors with the handicap ramp. Monongahela - please use the side door with the handicap ramp. Donora - please use the front door of the Church. To assist in the safety of everyone in the congregation, if you choose to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, please wait until everyone in the Congregation has received Communion. Afterward, you may come to the priest or deacon so that he may sanitize properly. PLEASE WHEN LEAVING USE ALL DOORS, AND DO NOT CONGREGATE!! Finally, we are still providing an Online Mass for the Weekend, as noted in the bulletin. Check the parish website at https://saintandrewmidmon.org. All Doors to the offices will be locked during business hours, you must either ring the door bells at the Monongahela and Charleroi sites or call the office in Donora and someone will answer the door. The offices are closed to the Public.

IF YOU FEEL SICK, WE ASK THAT YOU STAY AT HOME. 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 20, 2020 Reflections by: Deacon Al Advice from An Old Farmer

Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong. Keep skunks and bankers at a distance. Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. Words that soak into your ears are whispered… not yelled. Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight. Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads. Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge. You cannot unsay a cruel word. Every path has a few puddles. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. The best sermons are lived, not preached. Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway Don’t judge folks by their relatives. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good, honorable life… Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time. Don ‘t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none. Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance. If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’. Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got. The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin’. Always drink upstream from the herd. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment. Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in. If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God. Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you. Most times, it just gets down to common sense.

Food Bank Needs for the Holiday Season*

May our Lord continue to Bless our parish of St Andrew, as we continue to follow Jesus’ command “Feed my Sheep.” ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE 4th Sunday of Advent: Seminarian Tom

Alma Redemptóris Mater, quæ pérvia cæli Porta manes, et stella maris, succúrre cadénti, Súrgere qui curat pópulo: tu quæ genuísti, Natúra miránte, tuum sanctum Genitórem Virgo prius ac postérius, Gabriélis ab ore Sumens illud Ave, peccatórum miserére. The above prayer, known by its first three words, “Alma Redemptoris Mater”, is the Marian antiphon that is sung or recited at the end of each day. Compline is a part of the . The Liturgy of the Hours is the official set of "marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer". It consists primarily of psalms supplemented by hymns, readings and other prayers and antiphons prayed at fixed prayer times. Together with the Mass, it constitutes the official public prayer life of the Church. All clergy (Deacons and Priests), seminarians and most religious are bound to pray it five times every day. Compline is also known as night prayer and is the concluding “hour” of the day. After it is celebrated, the person prays a Marian antiphon, basically a short hymn dedicated to Our Lady and it changes seasonally. During Advent we sing the Alma Redemptoris Mater, which calls on the Incarnation and begs Our Lady, Star of the Sea to pray for us. Calling the Holy the “Star of the Sea” dates all the way back to St. , and since then countless have referred to her and fostered devotion under this title. While all things around us are growing darker we know that out of the darkness, Our Lady came to give birth to the Christ Child, all we need to do is call out to her. Loving Mother of the Redeemer, who remains the accessible Gateway of Heaven, and Star of the Sea, Give aid to a falling people that strives to rise; O Thou who begot thy holy Creator, while all nature marvelled, Virgin before and after receiving that "Ave" from the mouth of , have mercy on sinners

As we celebrate our Patron ---Saint Andrew here is a powerful that we can pray!

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother. Amen. 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 20, 2020 ADVENT A TIME TO PREPARE Mark’s Gospel begins with crying out “‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his path’” (:3). We prepare by repenting, making a straight, joyful path into our hearts. In Matthew (3:2), John heralds Jesus’ coming saying, “Repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” And the first words of Jesus in Mark (1:16) also call us to “Repent!” Advent is preparation to encounter Christ, a conversion of heart, turning from sin to Jesus for his Mercy and forgiveness. Advent is a season of reconciliation through Jesus. He wants us to know His Father (:7) and to know there is nothing we can ever do that would make the Father love us any less. Hear that? There is nothing we can ever do to make the Father love us any less. Nothing!

God “does not want to beat us and condemn us,” but rather “he always looks for a way to enter the hearts” of those who are repentant, the said in a homily Feb. 27. “When we priests — in the Lord’s place — hear confessions, we also must have this attitude of goodness like the Lord, who says, ‘Come, let us talk, there is no problem, there is forgiveness,’ and not with a threat from the beginning,” he said. Through the sacrament of reconciliation, he added, Jesus “does not threaten but rather calls us with kindness, having confidence in us,” which allows people seeking forgiveness to take “a step forward on the path of conversion.”

Jesus invites us to encounter Him in the merciful embrace of the Father’s boundless love in Reconciliation. Find joy!

During the day of preparations we offer this week, there are additional times and Priests for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Confessions are heard:

Monday evenings during Eucharistic Adoration in Charleroi 6:00 to 6:45 (with an additional Priest) Wednesday evening during Eucharistic Adoration in Monongahela 6:00 to 6:45 (with an additional Priest) Saturday afternoon in Donora 3:00 to 3:30

We will offer an opportunity after the Morning Mass in Donora on Tuesday & Thursday.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK During the COVID –19 PANDEMIC

Since the Pandemic started last Spring, society has seen not only an uptake in physical sickness but an increase in emo- tional uncertainties. There are many people who are afraid, for the welfare of others and for themselves. There are some who may also be affected spiritually.

In these troublesome times, there are a couple of things that remain constant - the love and the mercy of God. He is the calming agent that is the foundation of our fears and anxieties. Uncertain of the trials of life, people find peace through prayer and through the reception of the Holy Communion. The Sacraments have been, and will continue to be, the foun- dations of our life in Christ. They bring us healing and strength.

Because of the serenity that the Sacraments bring, we, the clergy team at St. Andrew, have decided to offer to anyone who desires the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The reception of the Sacrament unites us to the Cross of Christ. Through Christ we suffer, die and rise again. We are made one with the Divine Healer, who forgives us of our sins.

The Sacrament is intended for anyone who is in need of healing - physical, emotional and spiritual. Remember, the Sac- rament is a life - giving Sacrament for those in need of Solace and is referred to the Healing Sacrament meant for the living, to bring Christ into their lives.

Therefore, at each of the Parish Sites, we will be offering the Sacrament of the Sick after the daily Mass for those who are in need. Young or old, physically sick or emotionally/spiritually in need, the Sacrament is there for you, Christ is there for you. If the Sacrament helps relieve any anxieties that the pandemic brings, let it. Christ is there for us all. Within time we will offer this once a week in the new year.

Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE Madonna Catholic Regional School www.madonnacatholic.com 731 Chess Street Monongahela, PA 15063

On the birthday of the Lord, may his blessings and peace be with you. May his love descend on you. May you have a very, Merry Christmas season!

From all of us at Madonna Catholic Regional School, MERRY CHRISTMAS! 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 20, 2020 FAITH FORMATION/FAMILY CONNECTION/KIDS CORNER

Family Connection

One of the challenges of faith is to recognize God’s plan for us and to remain open to God’s will and God’s actions in our world. Filled with God’s grace, Mary models for us the kind of faith that is needed to cooperate in God’s plan of salvation. Like Mary, we are given the awesome opportunity to cooperate in God’s saving plan. On this final Sunday of Advent, our Gospel invites us to consider how our preparations for Christmas have made us more aware of God’s grace working in our lives. Gather together your family and talk about what you have been doing as a family to prepare for Christmas. How have these preparations helped you to better celebrate the central mystery of Christmas, the Incarnation? Our Gospel today talks about how Mary was prepared for her role in Christ’s birth. Read today’s Gospel, :26-38. Consider the question: What enabled Mary to say yes to God? Which of your Advent activities have made you more aware of God’s grace in your life? Conclude in prayer together that God’s grace will en- able your family to be more faithful and obedient to God. ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE
