Musical Assemblies: How Early Christian music functioned as a Rhetorical Topos, a Mechanism of Recruitment, and a Fundamental Marker of an Emerging Christian Identity by Jade Brooklyn Weimer A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department for the Study of Religion University of Toronto © Copyright by Jade Brooklyn Weimer 2016 Musical Assemblies: How Early Christian music functioned as a Rhetorical Topos, a Mechanism of Recruitment, and a Fundamental Marker of an Emerging Christian Identity Jade Brooklyn Weimer Doctor of Philosophy Centre for the Study of Religion University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This dissertation examines the various ways in which early Christ-followers incorporated music into their religious discourse and ritual practice. Scholars have primarily focused on two particular areas of inquiry: the cultural and religious 'origins' of early Christian music and the history of music within the context of church liturgy. Music, however, played a much greater role within Christian assemblies than simply existing as part of religious liturgy. I contend that music helped shape an emerging Christian identity within early Christ-following assemblies and collective singing became a vital component in defining in-group and out-group boundaries. Early Christian writings also demonstrate that hymn compositions were used as pedagogical tools, rhetorical devices, and mechanisms of recruitment to attract new members. I begin by examining Greco-Roman and Jewish primary source materials that reference or describe the nature of musical practice in antiquity in order to contextualize my study of musical references in early Christian texts. The next section utilizes recent developments in cognitive science to illustrate the importance of collective singing in establishing a group identity, creating cohesive social bonds, and evoking particular emotional responses.

  • People, Look East! Celebration of Mass Ad Orientem at Good Shepherd Advent and Christmas 2020
PEOPLE, LOOK EAST! CELEBRATION OF MASS AD ORIENTEM AT GOOD SHEPHERD ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS 2020 INTRODUCTION Angels announce with shouts of mirth Him who brings new life to earth. Set every peak and valley humming With the word, the Lord is coming. People, look East and sing today – Love, the Lord, is on the way.1 1. In the normal course of events, outside of pandemic restrictions on our Masses, we would put these words on our lips at least once during the Season of Advent. People, look East, and sing today – Love, the Guest, the Rose, the Bird, the Star, the Lord, is on the way. Why look East for the coming of the Lord? 2. Part of that answer may come readily. “Because Bethlehem is to the East!” During this Season of Advent, we prepare to welcome the Christ Child, who was born in that direction. Just as those magi from the East set their sights West toward Bethlehem to find him, we in the West set our sights East for the same reason. We look East so that we may encounter the Lord who comes to us in gentleness, in mercy, and in love. 3. There is, however, another reason to look East during Advent – a reason why people both West and East of Bethlehem look in that direction. For we also enter into this Season of Advent preparing to welcome Christ when he comes again2 “in glory to judge the living and the dead.”3 Love, the Lord, tells us that when he comes again, he will come from the East.

  • Prayers &Spiritual Practices
PRAYERS & SPIRITUAL PRACTICES Silence, Solitude, and Meditation We live in a world in which we are judged by what we “DO”. When we ask each other how we are doing our usual response is “I’ve been really busy.” Many times we say this as if it is a badge of honor. Unfortunately, the statement is true. Silence, Solitude and Mediation are not words we are accustomed to in our hurried lives. We all think that they are wonderful things that we hope to do someday, but never really experience. Even when we have some time we fill it with TV, Movies, iPods, iPhones, etc. If we sit still at all we feel that we are unproductive, we feel that we have “wasted” our time. However, it is during these times that we learn that God’s love for us has little to do with “doing” but is more about “being”. JUST BEING. Most of us are really good at being “HUMAN DOINGS” but really bad at being “HUMAN BEINGS”. All our tasks in life truly boil down to this: “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) The late author Henri Nouwen writes: One of the most obvious characteristics of our daily lives is that we are busy. We experience our days as filled with things to do, people to meet, projects to finish, letters to write, calls to make, and appointments to keep. Our lives often seem like over-packed suitcases bursting at the seams. In fact, we are almost always aware of being behind schedule.

  • Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish
SAINT ANDREW THE APOSTLE PARISH Prayer to Saint Andrew the Apostle O Glorious Saint Andrew, you were the first to recognize and follow the Lamb of God. With your friend Saint John, you remained with Jesus for that day, for your entire life, and now throughout eternity. As you led your brother Saint Peter to Christ and many others after Him, draw us also to Him. Teach us to lead others to Christ solely out of love for Him and dedication in His service. Help us to learn the lesson of the cross and to carry our daily crosses without complaint so that they may carry us to Jesus. Amen. DECEMBER 20, 2020 - 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT ST. • A Service of Word and Prayer November 1, 2020 St
ALL SAINTS’ DAY A Service of Word and Prayer November 1, 2020 St. John’s Episcopal Church Powell, WY 1 WELCOME Today’s service is one of praise, prayer and scripture. Current guidelines for worship in the Episcopal church do not allow us to sing, even with masks on. Communion, too, is a challenge during pandemic. But we are here as the people of God, to worship and to encounter the holy in each other. There is nursery care for children 3 and under, and Godly Play for 4 and older. Godly Play goes outside when weather permits, and masks are required for all kids. All Saints Day Today is a “principle feast” day. The Episcopal Church has seven such important days: Easter Day, Ascension Day, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, All Saints' Day, Christmas Day, and the Epiphany. All Saints’ Day is always on November 1 and celebrates all the saints, known and unknown. November 2 is All Soul’s Day, a time to remember and commemorate family and friends who have died. The Christian celebrations of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day stem from a belief that there is a powerful spiritual bond between those in heaven (the "Church triumphant"), and the living (the "Church militant"). We are better together. Stay healthy. Use hand sanitizer, avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, and mouth, and cover coughs and sneezes. Refrain from touching each other. Handshakes? Hugs? No, sorry. Avoid touching the backs of chairs; please leave chairs in place. If you know you have been in contact with someone who may have been exposed, or have traveled outside of the state, we recommend you wait to come to church for 10 days after you have returned.

Johnston This study seeks to examine the development of the Roman missal in order to contribute to the discussion of the methods and potential changes for the Holy Mass. The task for us in this work involves analyzing several key areas in order to understand the foundations for liturgical growth and demonstrate how these foundation can be applied in order to facilitate the growth of the Roman missal. Our first goal is to examine the historical account of how the Roman missal has developed, which is seen through what is called “organic development.” This often involves growth from the ground up; a gradual process that usually begins on the local level.
