A Prayer for the Good of Our Country

ost Holy Trinity, we place the United States of America into the hands of Mary Immaculate in order that she may present the coun- Mtry to you. Through her, we wish to thank you for the great resources of this land and for the freedom which has been its heritage. Through the in- tercession of Mary, have mercy on the people of America. Grant us peace. Have mercy on our President and on all the officers of our government. Grant us a fruitful economy, born of justice and charity. Protect the family life of the nation. Through the intercession of our Mother, have mercy on the sick, the tempted, sinners—on all who are in need. Mary, Immaculate Virgin, our Mother, patroness of our land, we praise you and honor you and give ourselves to you. Protect us from every harm. Pray for us, that acting always according to your will and the will of your divine Son, we may live and die pleasing to God. Amen.

(Excerpt from a prayer attributed to Archbishop John Carroll, first bishop of the United States)

The or Divine Office is the official set of prayers "marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer.” It consists primari- ly of psalms supplemented by hymns, readings and other prayers and anti- phons prayed at fixed prayer times. Together with the Mass, it constitutes the official public prayer life of the Church. The Liturgy of the Hours also forms the basis of prayer within . Priests and deacons are obligated to say the Divine Office, but it is available to all members of the Church. Over the centuries, the “” have been modified, giving us three major hours: the Office of Readings, Morning (or Lauds) and Evening Prayer (or ), and two minor hours, Daytime Prayer and Night Prayer ().

An easy and meaningful way to incorporate the Divine Office into your prayer life is to pray Night Prayer, the shortest and simplest of all.

Night Prayer is on a simple 7-day repeating cycle. It does not change during Advent, Lent, or for feast days. Praying at bedtime invites us to reflect on our day, ask for forgiveness, express our confidence in God’s love, and pray for a restful night and peaceful death. The psalms of Night Prayer are just about the best ones there are in terms of beautiful imagery and inspiring one-liners that will soon become part of your spontaneous prayer language. For example, Psalm 130 (“Out of the Depths”), and Psalm 91, the "Warrior's Psalm." If you have the myParish app, you can access the Liturgy of the Hours for each specific day of the week. Another option is to go to https://universalis.com/

Night Prayer follows these steps and takes about ten minutes: 1.Begin with the and recite O God come to my assistance. O Lord make haste to help me. say the Glory Be, and unless it is lent, you may add Alleluia. 2. Do a brief examination of conscience and make say the Lord Have Mercy or the Confiteor (I confess to Almighty God). 3. Read or sing the optional poem or hymn. 4. Recite the antiphon. Recite the psalm and the Glory Be. Repeat the Antiphon. 5. Do this with the second psalm if there is one. 6. Read the reading. Pause a moment for reflection. 7. Recite the responsory (Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit, etc.) 8. Recite the Canticle of Simeon (the ultimate bedtime prayer) the Antiphon, canticle, Glory Be, and Antiphon. 9. Recite the final prayer, and then the concluding verse: May the all-powerful Lord grant us a restful night and a peaceful death. Amen. Then recite one of the traditional Marian Prayers listed. (Hail Holy Queen, Hail Mary).
