Johnston This study seeks to examine the development of the Roman missal in order to contribute to the discussion of the methods and potential changes for the Holy Mass. The task for us in this work involves analyzing several key areas in order to understand the foundations for liturgical growth and demonstrate how these foundation can be applied in order to facilitate the growth of the Roman missal. Our first goal is to examine the historical account of how the Roman missal has developed, which is seen through what is called “organic development.” This often involves growth from the ground up; a gradual process that usually begins on the local level. Through the passage of time, some liturgical features mature and graft themselves onto the liturgy in a more permanent fashion, which may then be adopted Church-wide beyond the more local boundaries where it grew. Often, these developments have as their motivation some type of pastoral response involving the current situation in the Church. Therefore, this study will also examine the Liturgical Movement of the 20th century leading into the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. This pastoral maneuver establishes the precedent to move the Roman missal out of its nearly 400 year stagnation since the Tridentine reforms and respond to the need to generate the “active iv participation” of the laity. The movement quickly developed into a Church-wide entity calling for not only education and intelligent involvement with the Roman missal, but also a call to enact reforms and revisions to the Holy Mass in order to better facilitate this “active participation.” The concept of “active participation” and the laity was the banner of the 20th century liturgical changes and is still one of the major focuses today. Our study will also analyze and attempt to derive from the concept of “active participation” several subcategories. This is in an effort to identify other forms of active participation, which reveals the interior, individual, and unitive aspects that see “active participation” as not merely belonging to the category of external physical activity. This is an important feature to fully understand, as the 20th century reforms were based largely upon active participation and any future reforms and restorations should revolve around a better understanding of the major pastoral foundation of the liturgical renewal. Having established the foundations for our work, the organic development of the liturgy and the pastoral desires of the Church with regards to active participation, we will then examine the necessity to continue the development and reform of the Roman missal. This is explained by firstly investigating the Extraordinary Form, or what is essentially the Roman missal of 1962 which Pope Benedict XVI authorized for a wider use in the Church. Here, we will argue that it should continue its development, moving out of the year 1962, and follow Benedict XVI’s vision of its enrichment derived from the “Ordinary Form” or the reformed Roman missal of Paul VI. Conversely, pastoral issues surrounding the Ordinary Form will be examined in order to justify the reform and enrichment it can derive from the Extraordinary Form. The potential future development of each form of the Roman missal will be followed by various examples of how this process may begin and what fruits it may bear in the near future. The proposals given here will take into account the organic development of the liturgy, the pastoral desire of the Church with emphasis on the active participation of the lay faithful, the edification of the Body of Christ, and the glorification of God. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would first wish to thank my thesis director Dr. William Johnston for all of work in guiding me and being patient in the face of my personal issues.     O SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 29, 2018 Why a change in the Altar arrangement? I was visiting my parents and my father asked me what is this Benedictine altar arrangement and why are you changing it now? I have only known the liturgy since it’s reform after Vatican II. So first of all this is not some nostalgia of the Mass of my childhood. I have been inspired by the New Evangelization to consider seriously what we are doing to pass on the faith and why our youth are leaving the Christian faith and embracing secular society. How do we turn to Jesus and show them the way? This year I hope we can focus on the Liturgy as our source and summit. When the Liturgy was reformed it was promulgated in Latin and with the Priest was in unison with the people mediating the sacrifice of the Mass to God. It was special permission given to the conference of Bishops from Rome to allow: 1. Vernacular Masses and 2. To face the people. While both of these changes were embraced and became the norm of practice there were unexpected consequences from both of these changes. The Benedictine Arrangement is a compromise to continue the norm of facing the people while refocusing the Priest on the Sacrifice offered to God. The Ad orien- tum (facing East symbolically) through the placement of candles and cross is to refocus our hearts on our hope, the Sacrifice of Jesus.     Latin spelling and pronunciation 1 Latin spelling and pronunciation Latin spelling or orthography refers to the spelling of Latin words written in the scripts of all historical phases of Latin, from Old Latin to the present. All scripts use the same alphabet, but conventional spellings may vary from phase to phase. The Roman alphabet, or Latin alphabet, was adapted from the Old Italic alphabet to represent the phonemes of the Latin language. The Old Italic alphabet had in turn been borrowed from the Greek alphabet, itself adapted from the Phoenician alphabet. Latin pronunciation continually evolved over the centuries, making it difficult for speakers in one era to know how Latin was spoken in prior eras. A given phoneme may be represented by different letters in different periods. This article deals primarily with modern scholarship's best reconstruction of Classical Latin's phonemes (phonology) and the pronunciation and spelling used by educated people in the late Ancient Roman inscription in Roman square capitals. The aim of this study are relations existing between ideas developed in material ethics of values and ethical views espoused by David Hume. The problem under analysis encompasses two issues. For the universal calendar that to be found at the beginning of the Roman Breviary and Missal has been used. For the diocesan calendars no such straightforward procedure is possible. The decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites of 26th July 1960 at paragraph (6) required all diocesan calendars to conform with the new rubrics and be approved by that Congregation. The diocesan calendars in use on 1st January 1961 (the date set for the new rubrics to come into force) were substantially those previously in use but with varying adjustments and presumably as yet to re-approved. Indeed those calendars in use immediately prior to that date were by no means identical to those previously approved by the Congregation, since there had been various changes to the rubrics made by Pope Pius XII. Hence it is not a simple matter to ascertain in complete and exact detail the classifications and dates of all diocesan feasts as they were, or should have been, observed at 1st January 1961.

    Cardinal: Archbishop Lefebvre Will One Day Be Recognized as a Doctor of the Church; Was “Prophetic” Professor Armin Schwibach, a teacher of philosophy and Rome correspondent for the Austrian website Kath.net, has reported on Twitter that a cardinal has recently made to him some supportive comments about Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the deceased founder of the Society of St. Pius X. On August 21, Schwibach wrote: “As a cardinal recently stated: Archbishop Lefebvre will one day recognized as a Doctor of the Church. Therefore, ‘others’ have to measure up to him.” Catholic Family News reached out to Professor Schwibach, and he confirmed that indeed these words have only recently been spoken to him by a cardinal of the Catholic Church. On another occasion, according to Schwibach, this same cardinal added that Lefebvre was “prophetic.” However, the cardinal spoke these words privately does not wish to say so in public. This reliable fact, as revealed by Schwibach, is of great importance for the Catholic Church since it shows that there are other high-ranking prelates besides Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò and Bishop Athanasius Schneider who are seeing the validity of Archbishop Lefebvre’s own sustained criticism of the Second Vatican Council, of aspects of the post- conciliar Magisterium, and of the Novus Ordo Mass. Time for a Respectful Hearing It is to be hoped that this cardinal, as well as other prelates who are thinking in similar terms, would come out candidly into the public. It is time that this traditionalist position, which has been suppressed and ostracized for so many decades, to now be respectfully heard.

    A Comparison of the Two Forms of the Roman Rite Mass Structures Orientation Language The purpose of this presentation is to prepare you for what will very likely be your first Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). This is officially named “The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” We will try to do that by comparing it to what you already know - the Novus Ordo Missae (NOM). This is officially named “The Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” In “Mass Structures” we will look at differences in form. While the TLM really has only one structure, the NOM has many options. As we shall see, it has so many in fact, that it is virtually impossible for the person in the pew to determine whether the priest actually performs one of the many variations according to the rubrics (rules) for celebrating the NOM. Then, we will briefly examine the two most obvious differences in the performance of the Mass - the orientation of the priest (and people) and the language used. The orientation of the priest in the TLM is towards the altar. In this position, he is facing the same direction as the people, liturgical “east” and, in a traditional church, they are both looking at the tabernacle and/or crucifix in the center of the altar. The language of the TLM is, of course, Latin. It has been Latin since before the year 400. The NOM was written in Latin but is usually performed in the language of the immediate location - the vernacular. It began on 11th October 2012, exactly fifty years to the day from the start of Vatican II, and continues to the feast of Christ the King on 24th November 2013, just before Advent that year. During the Year of Faith, we are recalling the events of the Council and studying its various documents. My particular interest being liturgy, I have spent quite a lot of time on that subject, re-reading the Council’s document, the Constitution on the Liturgy, usually called Sacrosanctum Concilium (the first two words of its Latin text).
