PARISH

Prayer to Saint Andrew the Apostle

O Glorious Saint Andrew, you were the first to recognize and follow the Lamb of God. With your friend Saint , you remained with for that day, for your entire life, and now throughout eternity. As you led your to and many others after Him, draw us also to Him. Teach us to lead others to Christ solely out of love for Him and dedication in His service. Help us to learn the lesson of the cross and to carry our daily crosses without complaint so that they may carry us to Jesus. Amen.

Within this month we have many feast days like; Saint Blaise, , to Cyril and Methodius. Our Journey of Faith rooted in the word of God and yet celebrated in our Sacred Traditions. I would like to invite each of you on our Lenten Journey of Purification and En- lightenment.

Please continue to pray for those who are discerning and studying about our Catholic Faith in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Pray especially for our future of the Church as our youth are preparing for their reception of new Sacraments of Confirmation and the gift of First Eucharist.

Finally, as a parish may we continue to be open to the changes as we work and pray togeth- er as one family. Many hands can help us in our projects, gatherings of faith, fundraising and ministries in our daily liturgies.

RUMINATIONS BY FR. PAT

Last week we were talking about Sin in general and also of Venial Sins. We were reminded that venial sin weakens grace in the soul and damages our relationship with God. Venial Sins do not cut off the relationship with God; however, they do stretch that relationship to the limit. Mortal sins destroy the grace of God in the heart of the sinner. By their very grave nature, a mortal sin cuts our relation- ship off from God and turns man away from his creator. St. Paul’s letter to the Hebrews tell us that “if we sin willfully after having the knowledge of the truth, there is now left no sacrifice for sins” (Hebrews 10:26). When we commit mor- tal sin, we are deliberately saying “no” to God and His invitation to a life of Unity. There are three aspects of mortal sin that separate us from God. The first is that it is a grave matter, for example, diso- beying the Ten Commandments. Secondly, the person must know it is a grave matter. And, thirdly, with that full knowledge, the person chooses to commit the sin. We deliberately separate ourselves from the Life with God. The Catechism states: Mortal sin is a radical possibility of human freedom, as is love itself. It results in the loss of char- ity and the privation of sanctifying grace, that is, of the state of grace. If it is not redeemed by repentance and God's forgiveness, it causes exclusion from Christ’s kingdom and the eternal death of hell, for our freedom has the power to make choices for ever, with no turning back. However, although we can judge that an act is in itself a grave offense, we must entrust judgment of persons to the justice and mercy of God (1861). It is not God that makes us sin, nor is it the Devil. We, ourselves, are responsible for our actions. We have Free Will. Sin is always an exercise of the Will. Just as we can choose to follow Christ and be His , we can choose NOT to be that disciple. Love of God and neighbor and choosing to sin are those choices. The phrase “What would Jesus do?” can apply here. If one considers making a mortal sin, it would go against the an- swer to this phrase. If one chooses to be a disciple, it would be following that phrase. Go through the Ten Commandments when you are making an examination of conscience. They can be the foundation for whether you have committed a mortal sin or venial sin. ST. “Souper” Bowl Sunday Includes Food Drive

The “Souper Bowl of Car- ing” will be held this weekend February 1 and February 2, 2020. Please support our students’ efforts by making a monetary contribution and a donation of food for the Food Bank. For several years our Confirmation Can- didates have participated in Souper Bowl Sunday. The Souper Bowl of Caring pro- gram is a nationwide, ecumenical movement that equips and mobilizes youth to positively impact their communities by collecting mon- ey or food on or near Super Bowl weekend. One-hundred percent of the collections are donated directly to the charity of the stu- dents’ choice. This year, in addition to taking up a mon- etary collection for their retreat day efforts the students would like to include a Souper Bowl Food Drive for our local Food Banks. Oftentimes in January and February, follow- ing the generosity of so many people during the Christmas Season, donations for our lo- cal Food Banks begin to decline. The stu- dents would like to highlight the continued need for food donations over Souper Bowl weekend.

Family Connection Today we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Discuss with the family the persons of and Anna as they meet Jesus. (: 25–40)

Because Simeon and Anna lived lives of prayer and in the Temple, they were filled with the Spirit of God. That is why they were able to identify Jesus as the Savior even though Jesus was only a baby. To these two holy people, he was recognizable as the Redeemer who had been promised. Simeon described Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” We too are called to recognize Jesus as Lord. Together as a family discuss ways to recognize Jesus as Lord by praying and attending Mass, fasting, and serving others. As a family, decide on one specific sacrifice you can make in order to alleviate the suffering or need of someone you know. ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE PARISH EVENTS The Patronage of St. Andrew who was a Fisherman with his brother Simon Peter. As one Parish we are joining our efforts as volunteers and sharing in the work of ONE FISH FRY!

Volunteers are very critical for any fundraiser and so let’s share in this opportunity to work, laugh, share our gifts and our time. The Finance Council has asked that Saint Andrew Parish sponsor one Fish Fry at One Location throughout Lent, beginning with Ash Wednesday and ending on Good Friday!

If you have any interest in assisting in the community event from getting sponsors, advertisements, delivery, preparing the food, cleaning up, to greeting and clearing tables. Please let us know if you have any interest in helping our New Parish 1 Fish Fry.

Did you know that as we maintain our status of One Parish, your contributions here at St. Andrews helps pay all of the various bills we have for 10 buildings; Electricity, Heat and Water. The amount of bills that we face for all of the buildings and machinery we use in Monongahela, Donora and Charleroi can be overwhelming .

We are very blessed to have had the staff to maintain all of the business correspondence, the banking and the maintenance of the buildings. Our new Parish Business Manager has taken on the role to oversee all of the personnel, buildings, activities and the many layers of bills to be paid.

Over the past 20 plus years Judy Bartley has been a loyal and very helpful staff personnel for the parish community of Donora. In her time with the parish she maintained all of the books, the budget and parish activities. Judy has requested to begin to enjoy her life and step back from the busy work of Bookkeeper. Judy will be seen in our community in some of her current roles, like counting the money from the weekend offertory collections. She would like to have the option to work on a flexible schedule.

We cannot begin to thank Judy for her years of dedicated, conscientious and meticulous work as Bookkeeper and we wish her the very best. On behalf of the many priests we wish Judy many years of health and happiness.

DID you know that every First Friday we offer EUCHARISTIC ADORATION ALL DAY at our Donora church?

When the Blessed Sacrament is on the altar for ADORATION the church asks that someone is praying at all times. If you would like to come to pray for 30 minutes or a Holy Hour please contact the secretary in Donora.

The Sunday before the First Friday we will publish an insert with a reminder and a list of times with those who have committed themselves to pray in church with the Blessed Sacrament.

Please consider to come and Pray! THE PRESENTATION FEBRUARY 2, 2020 COMMUNITY EVENTS WWII comes to Donora!
