Sunday First Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 Is 55:1-11; 1 Jn 5:1-9; Mk 1:7-11 Isaiah tells of the Lord’s Servant, who will be inconspicuous, but will not rest Monday until justice is established. The Lord then tells his servant that he was formed Heb 1:1-6; Mk 1:14-20 to be “a light for the nations.” Tuesday Second Reading: Acts 10:34-38 Heb 2:5-12; Mk 1:21-28 Peter speaks to a group of pagans for the first time. He explains to them that Wednesday any person who follows God’s will is acceptable to God, regardless of Heb 2:14-18; Mk 1:29-39 nationality. Thursday Heb 3:7-14; Mk 1:40-45 Gospel: :7-11 Friday John the Baptist had claimed one would come far more powerful than himself, one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit rather than water. When Heb 4:1-5, 11; Mk 2:1-12 Jesus came to John and was baptized, the Spirit descended on him and a voice Saturday said, “You are my beloved Son. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Classes are in full swing with in-person classes meeting Monday at 5:00 pm, Virtual classes Tuesday at 5:00 pm, Eighth Grade virtual class Wednesday at 5:00 pm, and RCIA Thursday at 6:30. Home School classes are continuing. These parents have taken on the task of teaching their own children under our supervision and guidance.

CONFIRMATION: Eighth Grade classes meet on Wednesdays at 5pm. This year we are using a text that is very well known in Germany, but has not really taken hold in the U.S. It is based on the Youth Catechism (YOUCAT). Just before the Christmas break, we had a Zoom “Meet the Ministries”. At this Zoom our eighth graders were able to hear directly from our Ministry Leaders. Each one explained to the candidates what they do in their ministry and how the candidates can help them in this Pandemic. Each candidate went away with an assignment to fill out their Service Plan and submit it to us for approval. Just a reminder, each Confir- mation Candidate must spend a year in service to one of the ministries. If there are any questions please contact the CCD office at (856)783-0550. NOTE: To help the Eighth Graders we purchased a copy of the YOUCAT for each student. We cut costs by purchasing slightly used books in very good condition. If you have not done so, please pick up your copy in the CCD Office any afternoon after 2:30pm.

RCIA: ARE YOU AN ADULT WHO WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION, OR HOLY COMMUNION, OR ARE YOU SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING OF ENTERING THE CHURCH? Our online classes and discussion groups will pick up on Thursday January 7. Please contact Jim at [email protected] if you would like to “sit in” and see what it is all about, no pressure and no obligation.

NEW PARENTS WANTING THEIR CHILDREN BAPTIZED Please contact Jim at [email protected]. We can get your required instruction done via video conferencing and emails.

Beat the cold with some warm friends and fun activities! This week we decided to focus on some of the Saints! They are our friends and advocates, and their lives are an example of courage and strength. Many of us know that they walk with us through difficult times! You will hear some detailed descriptions of two saints, and we are asking that you gather a few facts about your favorite saint! Then on Thursday, Mary Lou has a new game called “Chronology!” In this game, you will win points if you can guess the timeframe of historical events! This looks like a lot of fun. What else are you doing on Tuesday and Thursday mornings? Please sign on and join in the fun! With the vaccine on the horizon, we will be able to meet again soon! If you would like to join our Zoom group, send an email to [email protected] and I will add you to the list. Lots of love!

Through Faith Direct you can make all of your contributions to St. Andrew the Apostle via automatic payment from your checking account or credit card – just as you may do now with your mortgage, household bills, and other monthly payments. This is a great way to simplify your giving – and it’s the most cost-effective, environmentally-friendly way for us to receive your gifts. Good News and Notes

THE BAPTISM OF JESUS is attested to in the of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The account that appears in Matthew is the only one to include the dialogue between Jesus and John, however. Another difference in Matthew’s presentation of this event is the announcement made by the voice from heaven, which says, “This is my beloved son”. In Mark and Luke, this voice addresses itself to Jesus: “You are my beloved son .”

The baptisms that John performs prefigure Christian Baptism. John baptizes for repentance from sin. In accepting this baptism, Jesus unites himself with all sinners even though he is sinless. In Matthew’s Gospel, John the Baptist distinguishes his practice of baptism from the Baptism that the brings: “I am baptizing you with water . . . He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” (:11). This Sunday marks a transition from the Christmas season to Ordinary Time. In a way, today’s feast is the high point of the Christmas season. Before Jesus’ birth, angels announced to Mary and to Joseph who Jesus would be. At his birth, the shepherds and the Magi recognize Jesus as the Messiah. At his baptism, Jesus accepts that he is God’s son and inaugurates that mission. We celebrate our baptism, when the Lord reaches down to us, elevates us, making us members of His family, fills us with the gift of grace, and echoes the same words, ‘you are my beloved, on you my favor rests.’ Jesus began His ministry on the banks of the river, and we begin our lives as disciples, not just the day of our baptism, but again today as we offer thanks for God coming to us with His grace.
