In presenting to our friends and the stamp collecting public ingenerai the first edition- of our price catalogue, the eighth publication of Its kind issued in the United States, wo make no special claim that the meritorious features it presents render It vastly superior to the publications of other dealers. Whatever we ourself may think on the subject, we have both the good taste and the modesty to leave that matter to the verdict of our patrons, satlsfled that our claims on their attention and consideration will not have been made in vain. In compiling this work we have endeavored as far as lay within our power, to produce a pnce catalogue in which the only attractive features would be the moderation of the scale of prices, and which would owe none of its merits to the dubious attractions of glittering show. How we have succeeded, the catalogue will best show for Itself; those persons who want an ornamental creation will be disappointed, but the consciousness of the lad that on the vital point of moderate prices our catalogue will meet the approbation of many stamp collectors, will more than compensate us for the pain we experience In thinking that the well-meaning persons who love display should have been disappointed. The tendency of prices In stamps has for the last two years been in common with everything else, downward, a"d our catalogue has been compiled on that basis. We have not catalogued the varieties existing through shades of color, watermark, or perforations of stamps, as there are but few collectors of all these varie­ ties. In order to make this work permanent, we shalllssue from time to time supple­ mentary leaves of newdy Issued stamps, which will be sent gratis to purchasers of this edition.
