The North Downs West ward encompasses the former Shepway ward of the same name, and includes parts of the former Tolsford, Elham and , and and Stanford wards. It is located inland, to the north-west of the District, and shares a boundary with both City Council and Ashford Borough Council districts, as well as the new Shepway wards of North Downs East, Hythe and Hythe Rural.

The ward covers a large geographical area, and comprises several rural villages of various sizes. These include , , Stelling Minnis, Stowting, , Etchinghill, , , Stanford and . Despite the largely rural nature of the ward, it is well connected within the Shepway District, and Kent as a whole, with good transport links and easy access to , Canterbury and Ashford.

Key characteristics of the ward are the village communities, offering a range of clubs, societies and organisations to get involved in, and the provision of open spaces, whether in the form of Open Access land, woodland, playing fields or recreational areas. A large part of the ward is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, reflecting it’s picturesque nature.

The 2013 mid-year population estimates published by the Office of National Statistics gives the total population for the North Downs West ward as 6250, with 3030 males and 3220 females across all age groups. The ward has a greater proportion of its population aged over 50 than the Kent average. Its largest population group is 65-69.

There are five Primary Schools within the ward, based in Bodsham, Lyminge, Sellindge, Stelling Minnis and Stowting.

Bodsham Church of Primary School25 is a small school, with an intake of 10 children each year. The school is based in a rural setting in an historic building dating from the 19th century.

Lyminge Primary School26 is a medium sized village primary, with an intake of 30 children each year. The Church of England school is based on a site in the heart of the village, adjacent to the village playing field, Tayne Field.

Sellindge Primary School27 is located on the A20 and admits up to 15 children into the Reception class each year.

Stelling Minnis Primary School28 is located close to the Parish and District boundary in a rural setting, and serves families of both Stelling Minnis and neighbouring . The school has a maximum intake of 15 children each year.

Stowting Primary School29 is located in a rural setting, and admits up to 15 children into their Reception class each year.

Secondary Schools

There are no Secondary Schools within the ward. Pupils living in the ward predominantly attend secondary schools in Folkestone, Ashford or Canterbury.

Pre Schools

There are four pre-schools in the ward, located in Lyminge, Postling, Sellindge and Stelling Minnis.

Lyminge Pre-School30 runs from Lyminge Village Hall and is open from 8am until 6pm, with provision available during school holidays. The preschool caters for children from the age of 2 to 5 years old.

Badgers Bridge Nursery and Forest School31 operates from Postling Village Hall. Some sessions are held in the forest-school outdoor setting in Lyminge, where weather permits.

Little Learners Pre-School32 is based in Sellindge, within the grounds of the village Primary School. It offers care from 8am until 6pm, and includes the school holidays.

Bossingham Pre-School33 is located adjacent to Stelling Minnis Primary School in a purpose-built facility. The preschool is open from 9am to 3pm, with breakfast and after-school provision available at the neighbouring primary school.

Across the North Downs West ward, there is a good spread of young people across the age range, with slightly lower numbers of preschool children recorded.

GP Surgeries

New Lyminge Surgery41 is located on Greenbanks in Lyminge. The practice has three GPs and various clinics, including asthma and new baby clinics.

The Surgery42, Lyminge is located on Church Road in the heart of the village. The practice has two GPs and offers other clinics and services. Both Lyminge surgeries serve Lyminge residents, as well as those in nearby Etchinghill, Posting, Rhodes Minnis and further afield.

Sellindge Surgery43 is located on the A20 and has four GP’s. The practice offers patient services to Sellindge residents as well as other villages in the ward, most notably Stowting and Stanford North.

Pharmacy

There is one pharmacy in North Downs West. Lyminge Pharmacy is located on Station Road in Lyminge and is open 6 days a week.

Dentist

There are no NHS Dental practices in the North Downs West ward.

Care Homes

There are no care homes in the ward. There is some provision within social housing for more vulnerable, older people in the form of Nailbourne and Everest Courts.

Nailbourne Court is located in Lyminge and is a Council-owned sheltered housing scheme for the over 60s, with communal facilities and garden.

Everest Court is also located in Lyminge and is a Council-owned semi-sheltered housing scheme for over-50s.

There is also a private complex of flats and bungalows at Wentworth Close, Lyminge for those over 55 years of age, which is warden attended and has communal facilities.

There are no walk-in-centres in the North Downs West ward. The closest walk-in-centre is located at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Folkestone.

A Planning Application for residential development in the village of Sellindge, on land adjacent to the existing Doctor’s Surgery and car park on the A20, has been approved by the Council’s Planning Committee72. The development also includes plans to expand public car parking, increasing the size of the primary school and doctor’s surgery, adding retail units, a village green and new Parish Council offices, and improvements to the A2073.
