  • Monks Horton Parish Meeting From
Monks Horton Parish Meeting from . Councillor, Vice Chairman SUBMISSION TO CSR. FHDC. JULY 2020. This document, published some 18 months ago has been reviewed to account for weather conditions over the past year. POTABLE WATER SUPPLY. I would begin by prefacing this document with a brief description of where we are now in terms of water scarcity and potable water supply for a growing community. The South East of England has always been, in relation to the rest of the UK, water stressed. With a growing local population, certainly over the past 30 years, measures have been taken to try to limit water usage which has, for the most part, been successful. Metering has played a big part in the water intake of households, made compulsory by the designation of our local water company, Affinity Water, of having ‘Water Scarcity Status’. Some 90% of supplies are now metered. Over recent years we have seen drought measures instigated by way of hose pipe bans, car washing facilities restricted or shut down and so forth. Affinity Water has persuaded us to use hippo bags in WC Cisterns, and even today are promoting (FOC) water saving shower heads and similar products to save water. There was even a plan to import water through the channel tunnel fire hydrant system and tow water filled barges across the North from Scandinavia in the mid nineties given the local drought situation. The scenario of severe drought has not yet fully been experienced, but with a growing local population, would the attempted measures of resilience being mooted be enough to alleviate and reduce such a situation happening in the near future? Migration from cities is definitely not one of them and would only serve to exacerbate the water scarcity situation even further.

PARISH OF POSTLING ANNUAL PARISH MEETING 2016 DRAFT Minutes of Postling Annual Parish Meeting held at Parish Village Hall on Wednesday 25 May 2016 starting at 7.30pm. PRESENT: Cllr Frank Hobbs (Chair), Cllr Christine Hobbs, Cllr John Elphick, Cllr Helen Calderbank, Jo Maher (Clerk), County District Councillor Susan Carey, KALC Chairman Ray Evison, Clive Adsett, Christine Webb, Tony Van Eldik, Marieke Van Eldik, Pat Elphick, Jan Wood, Derek Wood, Jenny Mannion 1) APOLOGIES: District Councillor Jenny Hollingsbee, Cllr John Pattrick, Cllr Charlie Wilkins, Cllr Jane Reynolds, Chris Reynolds, Gill Dixon 2) MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING: The Minutes of the previous Annual Parish Meeting held on Wednesday 20 May 2015 were approved and signed by the Chair. This was proposed by Cllr Elphick, seconded by Cllr Christine Hobbs and unanimously agreed. 3) CHAIRMAN’s REPORT: Your Parish Council had another busy year. We are currently threatened by major developments in the area. The on-going consultation about the lorry park at Junction 11 was expected to report some time ago on the preferred site, but there is no news yet, and now probably won’t be released until after the referendum. This could have a knock-on effect on the sand extraction site if they chose Option 2. And now there is the proposal from Shepway DC for a “garden town” running on the southern side of the motorway from Junction 11 to the western edge of Sellindge, no doubt Cllr Carey will enlighten us more in her report. We have been invited to a meeting at SDC early next month, along with the other affected parishes, to be briefed fully on the proposed project.

  • A History of Ash and Its Churches
A History of Ash and its Churches The present parish of Ash, more than 7,000 acres in extent and one of the largest in Kent, was once only a part of the great manor of Wingham. Originally a royal manor, Wingham was given by King Athelstan of Kent to the See of Canterbury about 850 : it covered the present parishes of Ash, Goodnestone, Nonington, Wingham and parts of Staple and Womenswold. In a list of churches probably made in 1071, in which 'Aesce' is said to belong to Wingham, mention is also made of an apparently more important church 'de Raette', as well as one at 'Fleota' belonging to the manor of Folkestone. If, as seems likely, 'de Raette' refers to Richborough, this is the only record of that church; but the chapel of Fleet, actually within the 3rd century Roman walls of Richborough Castle, continued in use until the 16th century. Leland in the time of Henry VIII wrote that 'withyn the castel is a lytle paroche Chirch of S. Augustine'. It was believed that when St. Augustine first stepped ashore in England in 597 the impression of his foot was miraculously left upon a stone. This relic was afterwards kept in this chapel dedicated to him, and pilgrims flocked there upon the anniversary of the landing to pray and to recover their health. Excavations have uncovered the ground plan of the chapel, and confirm that it was pre-Norman in origin. Excavations in the northwest comer of the Roman fort have also, revealed the foundations and font of an even earlier church of c.400, one of the earliest Christian structures known in Britain.

  • Notes on the Probable Course of the Roman Road from Lympne to Dover
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 62 1949 NOTES ON THE PROBABLE COURSE OF THE ROMAN ROAD FROM LYMPNE TO DOVER By IVAN D. MARGARY, F.S.A. THE existence of a Roman road connecting Lympne with. Dover is attested by its actual appearance upon the diagrammatic map known as the Peutinger Table. No traces of the road had, however, been identified, and the growth of Folkestone and its outskirts has now put much of the probable route beyond direct investigation. Some notes were put forward by the late S. E. Winbolt in his book Roman Folkestone (Methuen, 1925) as a tentative approach to the subject, and it was with a view to testing these on the ground that the present investigation was made. There is general agreement that the existing road along the old cliffs at Lympne represents the Roman road. East of Shipway Cross it bends a good deal and is probably an old ridgeway track rather than an engineered road, but there seems no reason to disregard it as a part of the route on that account. We thus arrive at the crossing of the Brockhill Stream, just at the western entry to Hythe, and it seems clear that the trackway is directly continued by an old lane, now in part only a footpath, straight up the hill north-eastwards to Saltwood, making no doubt for the hills inland. Consideration of the eastward course of a Roman road from this point is very largely determined by the topography, which here shows marked features some of which would entirely preclude the making of a direct road.
