Lyminge Heritage Questions and Answers

Last month’s piece about the trader’s token produced a lot of interest (Q3alt – Are there any objects that reflect the locality’s heritage [eg the gates at Yew Tree Cross]?) It is certainly fascinating not only because of its age but also because of its connection with our locality. I have been told since last month that the larger letters in the centre of the coin often reflect the initials of the trader’s surname and first name as well as the first name of the merchant’s spouse. On the other side of this coin is the trader’s name which we think is Richard S S Symonson. This would suggest that the initials on the first side are R M rather than B M as I interpreted them last time. On reflection, it would appear that indeed the letter is R rather than B. My confusion arose because the bottom of the R is a little unclear and the end of the right downstroke is a little higher than the left. With some smudging at the base of the letter, it first appeared be a B. In summary, this token tells us that probably Richard Symonson was, in 1664, a grocer from Elham. The first letter of his wife’s name was M. Was she Mary? Martha? Perhaps some one knows of some records of 17th century Elham and can enlighten us further about these two past residents of the Valley? I have depicted both sides of the token below.

Derek Boughton has written to me about the origin of the name of Loughborough Lane. He says, “No doubt the former connection with Lord Loughborough is the justification for ‘poshing-up’ the name, but I am quite sure that it was originally ‘Louseborough Lane’. It was very common for areas in parishes to be given pejorative names, and there was an exact parallel in Elham, where the area below the vicarage was known as ‘Fleaberry Corner’.” As we get near to the fortieth anniversary of Lyminge Association I am receiving some information about its early days. If anybody has any more details about those times in the 1970s then please contact me (Q12). I will write about those groundbreaking events for our community after the Summer. Finally, a new question. As some of you may know, I am interested in folk music. (Yes, I know all those jokes about morris dancing!) What I would like to know is if any reader remembers singing any ‘old’ songs; remembers any songs that many people knew (perhaps you sang them on coach trips) or recalls any songs that would tend to lodge in the mind and you would find yourself humming (Q23)? There are many definitions of folk music and mine is very broad. Do you have any answers or want to ask any questions about the local heritage? If so then please contact me. Alistair Bailey (email: [email protected] tel: 864235)

Lyminge Weather Statistics March 2010 Thanks to Mr D Godden Maximum Minimum Temperature (oC) 16.4 (15/3/10) -4.9 (3/3/10) Air Pressure (hPa) 1022 (6-19/3/10) 886 (30-31/3/10) Wind Speed (mph) 41 (NW on 10/3/10) (SW on 30/3/10) Total Monthly Rainfall 80mm (3.15 inches) (Highest day 15mm on 30/3/10) NB The rain and snow over this Winter meant that the Nailbourne rose in the week preceding Easter and was in full flow through Elham, Barham and Kingston. There has been flooding of the fields around the former Palm Tree public house and beyond.

8. Letters to the Editor

In response to Simon Filby’s letter, April 10 issue, I disagree with his attack on Liz Coleman’s public spirited letter published in the March newsletter. He obviously does not understand the overall situation, living happily remote from the area in question. Of course everyone was concerned about the welfare of the staff and their future, they are held in high regard and their products are second to none. However, I completely agree with Liz Coleman’s comments. North Lyminge Lane is far too narrow for container trucks, backing almost daily and causing disruption. A factory developed to such a size in output, especially operating with inflammable products, should not be in close proximity to village properties. The Fire Brigade were so efficient and worked so hard over four days. We were warned by the Commander, that if the building collapsed, there would be a fireball in our direction. Fortunately this did not happen. If the wind had been in a different direction neighbours and ourselves would have been in real trouble. We could feel the heat through our windows Yours faithfully Alan Stubbs

For the attention of all residents, Planning Application Y10/0234/SH

This information is for all residents that receive the Newsletter but in particular those in Etchinghill. The Etchinghill Village Hall Management Committee have submitted a planning application to Shepway District Council for the installation of an Advertisement Board. This Board is to be erected in the car park for the carpet shop and garage, and will be in the corner next to the road about where the skip is at the moment and will be facing the traffic entering the village. The Board is similar in design to the one at the entrance to the Etchinghill Village Hall car park. The height of the board will be 2.4 Metres (8 Ft), with the size of the poster display area being 2.4 Metres (8 Ft) wide by 1.2 Metres (4 Ft) high, this is twice the width and one and a half times the height of the display area of the one at the Village Hall. By the time you read this the Planning Officer's report will I suspect be written, however you can still make known your views for or against by writing to Planning & Building Control, Shepway District Council, Civic Centre, Castle Hill Avenue, Folkestone, Kent, CT20 2QY. To look at the plans, either contact the Planning Office on Tel 01303 853000 to obtain a suitable time to view, or for those on line the link is http://www.ukplanning.com/ukp/showCaseFile.do?councilName=Shepway+District+Council&appNumber=Y10 /0234/SH You can also enter your comments on this web page. If the Planning Officer recommends approval of the application the matter will be referred to the Shepway District Council's Development Control Committee and the District Councillors on that committee will make the final decision. I personally would be interested in your view for or against as I believe this is an important decision for the village that all should have a say on. You can contact me on Tel 01303 862015 with your vote for or against. Regards, Richard Chubb.

Around 4.30pm on Saturday 17th July 2010 , we will be arriving as newly-weds to the Jubilee Field in a helicopter, ready for our wedding reception at the village hall. Safety staff from the helicopter firm, Manston-based Sky Charter, will cordon off a section of the field for a brief time to allow for a safe landing and take off. Lyminge Parish Council has kindly given us its authority for the landing and we thank villagers in advance for their understanding. Please do not think we are a Wayne and Coleen or a Posh and Becks; we just thought we would treat ourselves to a bit of a once-on-a-lifetime experience on our special day! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us on 07877 483718. Thank you and kind regards, Jo Robertson and Mike Godden

Samuel Jacobs Hair Salon On 1st June we shall be celebrating ten years hair dressing in Lyminge. We would like to thank you for your support (long may it continue) and invite you to pop in for a drink and nibbles or just to say ‘Hello’
