The of is the first in that promoted a crowdfunding platform dedicated to projects with high social impact in the city.

A new way for a Public Administration to fund projects of public and social interest and at the same time engage citizenship that can directly support projects. The steps towards the crowdfunding

The initiative was possible thanks to the collaboration between two departments within the Municipality: • Labour Policies, Economic Development and Commerce • Social Policies, Rights and Health

We received 5 proposals 2 operators excluded from the competition for formal shortcomings; 3 operators admitted to the selection:

• Anteprima S.r.l. won the selection for hosting the crowdfunding service • Platform EPPELA hosts the projects and supports the activities of communication and promotion of the projects

We decided not to open “our” platform in order to save resources and to access to the big network of users that already is active on Eppela (450.000 monthly users_ 2015)

SELECTION When the call closed, 53 projects were received. 22 were selected based on following criteria:  innovation,  economic sustainability,  impact,  adaptability of the project to the online campaign April 29 - June 18, 2016 ON THE PLATFORM We decided to publish projects June 13 - August 2, 2016 September 15 - November 3, 2016 selected in four different slot (50 days), in order to give October 31 - December 19, 2016 them more visibility. 18 projects to go on the platform

THE GOAL The project needed to collect donations for more than 50% of the total budget amount. If this target is reached, the City of Milan donates the other 50% of the total budget amount

“All or Nothing” method Final results

• 53 projects received • 22 projects selected • 18 projects on the platform (4 withdrawn before going on the platform) • 16 projects funded and 2 failed • 88,8% of the projects were funded • Eppela reports that the index of success of projects on their platform is usually around 60% Money raised on the platform

Up to 50,000 euro for each project. Total budget at disposal: 400,000 euro Some of the projects that reached the goal:

COSTRUIRE L'IMPROVVISO («Setting up suddendly») Setting up a public space of aggregation in the farmstead Torrette. The envisaged interventions concern three conceptual areas: 1) green, 2) ICT and 3) community development. MARE SRL Objective of the project is to give back the city a space that is IMPRESA SOCIALE open to the public and encourages events of gathering and connection among citizens Project Budget: € 28.638 Collected through donations: € 14.975 GALLAB («Lab for ») Creation of a “neighbourhood’s FabLab” through the renovation of a space in the Gallaratese Neighbourhood; the place will become a NON RISERVATO APS hub for locals for designing, sharing and exchange. Project Budget: € 50.000 Collected through donations: € 25.225

SICUREZZA D'ARGENTO («Silver Safety») Planning of a service that will ensure the safety of the elderly living alone in their homes, supporting their families with non- PUNTO SERVICE invasive systems and through the support of qualified operators. Project Budget: € 44.000 Collected through donations: € 22.765 Some of the projects that reached the goal:

CHILD EXPLORER Realization of a service for the protection of children within the city, through a device consisting of an App, a smartwatch and a ENBELIVE SRL pervasive game to make children protagonists of their welfare. Project Budget: € 10.000 Project Budget: € 5.255

FACCIAMO LA FESTA ALLA MAFIA («Let’s celebrate, against the mafia») Project based on the reuse of Casa Chiaravalle, a space formerly CONSORZIO SIS used by criminals for their practices and therefore confiscated by the State. The aim is to bring the space to its dimension of ““usual urbanity» («urbanità consueta”), enabling the local community to regain its possession. • The total raised by the four crowdfunding campaigns € 333.136 • The contribution from Comune di Milano € 323.413 • The potential investment in the territory € 656.549 • The project that has collected the largest amount of donations is "CINEWALL" project with € 50.147; • The highest donation was collected from the «Il cantiere dell’» project, with € 6.000; • The total number of donors is 1.308
