My dear Fathers, I'm connec ng to you once again through this video message, as I plan to do so con nuously while the Coronavirus crisis persists. Our Communica ons Centre is an invaluable help for this.

It is essen al at this stage that we ourselves do not panic or get fearful. We need to give wise and prudent leadership to our people. All should take adequate precau ons, and this is important. The Prime Minister hit the right note in his television address on Thursday, when he said: "Do not think that we have escaped because we do not have so many cases." Mr Uddhav Thackeray was also very prac cal in his message yesterday. From a study of what has happened in other countries, the next couple of weeks are crucial, and if we can control the situa on now, we will be spared a long-term lockdown which could become inevitable and necessary.

I aff ec onately urge all our priests not to expose themselves to this infec on. has cancelled all his mee ngs and engagements, and I have done so here, including our ' Team Mee ngs. Our Clergy Recollec on has been cancelled, and the Ordina ons and the Chrism Mass stand postponed.

Therefore, please, please take the threat seriously, and stay at home for the next few weeks. The Church, the Archdiocese, all of us, and I need you. Make do with minimum staff . Your cook/a endant should be careful not to bring infec on into your house. I request that you give leave to all non-essen al staff , and treat this as extraordinary leave with pay. Do not cut their salary, because they do not report for work. There are two urgent ma ers about which I want to speak to you today. The fi rst is Funerals and the second is Confessions.

1. Funerals: A er studying Government advisories, I am issuing the following direc ves: a. People should be encouraged to pray for the deceased, but there is to be no public Requiem Mass now. The body may be taken directly to the burial ground where all the Funeral Prayers can be said before the burial. Keep the number of mourners to the minimum. Please keep the Police informed of the funeral. b. In case of death due to a suspected coronavirus infec on, avoid any physical contact with the body; the rela ves too should be advised the same. c. This is a moment of great sadness for the family of the deceased. Assure them that once the crisis is over, we will have a proper Requiem Mass in the church with the Eulogy, etc. We will give direc ves about this later.

2. Confessions: In the present situa on, it is not advisable to hear individual confessions. I think the condi ons given in Canon 961#2 for General Absolu on are fulfi lled for those suff ering from the coronavirus infec on. However, it will not be possible to get them (together) for an Absolu on without individual confession. Hence if you are able to, and I will do this at the Archdiocesan level, catechize the people about the necessity and adequacy of perfect contri on for the forgiveness of sins. This is Catholic Doctrine.

Norms have been received from for Holy Week Services and the possibility of obtaining Plenary Indulgences. I will get back to you on this. This video message was to address issues needing our immediate a en on. Thank you; take care of yourselves; and we are united in prayer.

My dear Fathers, I am happy to be once again connec ng with you. I hope each one of you is well in your parishes. I repeat my aff ec onate direc ons to you: Do not move out unless necessary, maintain social distancing even in the parish community. And please wash your hands with soap and water repeatedly. This seems elementary advice; but even the interna onal TV channels are stressing that this is a sure way of controlling the spread. CNN yesterday even gave a tutorial on how to wash hands during this Coronavirus crisis.

Dear Fathers, the lockdown is scheduled to end on April 14 - Easter Tuesday. But seeing what is happening in other countries, I foresee that the Government might be compelled to extend the lockdown. So do prepare yourselves psychologically for an extended lockdown. Hence, please do not schedule any Bap sms, First Communions and Marriages immediately a er April 14. It would not be prudent to do so.

In Mumbai, the Municipal Commissioner has ordered that the bodies of all coronavirus vic ms be cremated. Burial is not allowed. Also, mourners are to be restricted to fi ve. The police should be informed about the death and crema on.

On television, we have seen the human tragedy of thousands and thousands of migrant workers heading home on foot, in the north of the country. It does not appear to have happened in Mumbai, but keep your eyes and ears open for any migrant workers in distress in your parish. I am also concerned about the elderly who may be alone at home. Could our SCCs ensure that they have suffi cient provisions?

Today, I want to share with you some guidelines for our Holy Week Services: Palm Sunday: You may celebrate the Eucharist without a congrega on. Rome has indicated that a parish church may use the third form given in the Roman Missal. Make sure that you do not contravene the restric ons of Sec on 144, if you have lectors for the reading of the Passion.

Maundy Thursday: The service could be short, omi ng the washing of the feet. The direc ves from Rome have given the op on of praying the Vespers of the day in place of the Eucharist. But I do encourage all our priests to celebrate Mass, as this Feast commemorates the ins tu on of the Eucharist by our Lord. A er Mass, you could take the Blessed Sacrament directly to the tabernacle without any procession.

Good Friday: The service would be less solemn because there is no congrega on. During the Universal Prayer, do include a special Coronavirus prayer in the last sec on—the prayer for those in tribula on.

Easter: The Vigil service can be celebrated the previous evening. The service is shorter. The Paschal candle is lit without the blessing of the fi re and prepara on of the Candle with the grains of incense. Immediately a er this, the Exsultet is proclaimed. We could have just three readings from the Old Testament; the reading from Exodus is obligatory. For the Bap smal Liturgy, we have just the renewal of Bap smal promises (no blessing of water). The Mass follows as usual. On Sunday morning, you could celebrate the Easter Mass. If your people know at what me you are celebra ng the liturgy, they can be spiritually united with you at that hour in their homes. They could profi tably read sec ons of Scripture or pray the Rosary, while you are offi cia ng at the Service. As these are detailed norms which you have to follow, I am having my offi ce make these guidelines available to you on the Archdiocese of Bombay website and all our Archdiocesan media portals, so that you can refer to the text when you are preparing your liturgies. Have a spiritually fulfi lling week, and we con nue to pray for each other. I will get back to you soon.

My dear Fathers, I am contac ng you once again, as we prepare for Holy Week. I missed the Chrism Mass which would have been celebrated yesterday. It is one of the high points of the year, where we all meet. I had given liturgical guidelines for Holy Week; I hope they were clear and helpful. I got a few queries about the Easter Candle. Most of you would probably not have an Easter 2020 Candle. You can use last year's Easter Candle, changing the 19 into 20 by pas ng a s cker. This makeshi arrangement could later remind us of the extraordinary mes that we are going through. Looking at the Candle, we can later give praise and thanksgiving to the Lord. Similarly, since no oils have been blessed this year, please use last year's Holy Oils.

I am livestreaming the Liturgy of the Holy Week from the Cathedral. It will also be televised. The Mass on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday will be at 9:00 a.m. On , Good Friday and Holy Saturday, we will have the Service at 7:00 p.m. live from the Cathedral. I invite those of you who can, to join me in these services, and I will be conscious of your par cipa on.

It is important that we feel strengthened by bonding with one another in these trying mes. I have a sugges on: Generally, every morning, unless I have an important ma er to a end to, I will be in my Chapel from 12:30 p.m. If you are able to, you can join me in prayer at the same me. Similarly, every evening at 8:00 p.m., we pray in the Cathedral Chapel; you could join us from your place. We can grow closer to the Lord and to one another at the end of this lockdown.

Earlier this week, I wrote a le er to the Prime Minister, off ering full assistance from the Church at this cri cal moment. The Prime Minister later had a video conference with health workers, including representa ves from the Church— the Director of Caritas India and the Director General of the Catholic Health Associa on of India. Last evening, the Prime Minister's Offi ce held a video conference with representa ves of selected NGOs and Civil Society Organisa ons. I par cipated in this discussion; the case of migrant workers was highlighted. This a ernoon, I spoke to the Director General of the Home Guards about assistance to migrant workers, which is the immediate human problem. They wanted some facili es in the city, where they could distribute food to the migrant workers in distress. This is an immediate need, and very essen al to prevent the danger of a further spread of the Coronavirus, which must be se led in a day or two. I will discuss this with those concerned this evening, and get that organised. In the mean me, I am se ng up a Crisis Management Team, so that we can respond to the rapidly changing scenario on a day to day basis.

In conclusion, once again, please take abundant cau on, and advise our people also to do so. Social distancing is essen al for our safety. If apart from the bigger centres which are helping, you no ce any cases of migrant workers in your parish, please help immediately. Bp Barthol has wri en to the SCC Coordinators about this. Our Prime Minister has appealed to us to come out with lights on Sunday, April 5 at 9:00 p.m. We could make this an occasion of prayer, as also for our people. I wish you a very grace-fi lled Holy Week, and let us con nue to pray for each other.

6 · THE EXAMINER · APR 04 - 17, 2020 CARDINAL'S EASTER MESSAGE

As heirs of God's promise of new life in the Resurrec on of Christ, we are called even in these dark days to hope for God's deliverance from the power of sin and death. This hope is a bold and fi rm confi dence in God's promises, when discouraging news fi lls the air, and tragedy itself threatens to squelch our spirits. The recent Coronavirus pandemic has increased the focus of our awareness of this tragic state of aff airs. Repentance calls us not to avoid this reality, but to make room for a grieving that orients us to metanoia. This is not a fatalism which panics, and gives up at the sight of death. Chris ans mourn, but not without hope. points us to Easter, turning from Death to Resurrec on.

The Chris an life is always a challenging one. It is a perilous journey in the desert, in the wilderness, where the devil a acks and tempts God's children. Times of crisis especially should make us vigilant and watchful. Tempta ons can make us despair over tragedy, doubt God's promises of protec on, provision, and life. A bold confi dence in God's promises is about faith in Christ and His life, because God is faithful and true. Chris ans are also reminded that the wilderness is the place of God's presence, the place of tes ng, where He refi nes us to be resilient and stand fi rm in His promises when mes are tough. We are in the desert, but not alone. God's Spirit accompanies and leads us. It is a me for seeing God alone as our oasis in the desert, to grow in our dependence on His mercies through prayer and the Word of God. In moments of tempta on and tes ng, set aside me to call upon the Spirit in prayer for protec on from all assaults of the devil and for guidance and strength in His Word.

When, due to preven ve measures, we are deprived of visible and tangible signs of His invisible presence in the Sacraments and restricted to virtual reality, we should discern His real presence, even in the absence of these consola ons, which calls for a deeper level of spirituality of the dark night of the soul. God works, even if we cannot observe the le er of the Law, but keep the spirit of the Law, with regard to the Eucharist - the source and summit of our Chris an life. In fact, there are more people par cipa ng devoutly in the Eucharist in interior and spiritual communion, realising a deeper level of reverence and in macy with the presence of God online. The faithful are se ng me aside for confessing their sins to God in a spirit of perfect contri on and genuine purpose of amendment, with the sure hope of forgiveness from a merciful God. God can draw greater good through the shortcomings and limita ons of our situa ons.

The Chris an life is one of conformity to Christ in His sacrifi ce, in His self-giving to others, even unto death. It is really about joyfully sacrifi cing for others. In unprecedented mes, sacrifi ce may take diff erent forms. Some serve ailing pa ents in the frontlines, o en at the risk of their own personal health. Many are learning that it can also mean staying home and keeping a safe distance from neighbours, so as not to put them in harm's way. In mes of crisis, we die to self in order to make room for the more needy neighbours in our midst. We learn to put on the form of the servant, and put the interests of others before our own. It is honest to think of ourselves as a communion of both givers and receivers of divine generosity in the manner of our unity with Christ. It is indeed a me for authen c Chris an hospitality and charity.

The Chris an life is one of devo on to God in good and bad mes. Living in isola on might not be enough to give us much needed rest—literal rest to keep us healthy, to take care of our minds and bodies, but gives us me to go into contempla on and spend me with God in prayer, praise and thanksgiving. These are defi ant acts of an Easter people who hope against all hope—acts of bold faith in Christ, our Lord, who's got the whole wide world in His hand!

t Easter, we will celebrate the high point of the glorious saving message of our Faith that promises New Life in Jesus, our Risen Lord. In the face of the challenge of the A Coronavirus calamity, we are called to wrestle with a Resurrection response of hope that life will prevail over death. Confronted with the rapid exponential growth and mortal strikes of this insidious and treacherous virus, can we draw light from the Resurrection event to contain the underlying cause of the new COVID-19 pandemic? There is panic in grocery stores—an insane and insatiable greed to hoard food and other basic necessities beyond our needs. We see a proliferation of anxiety and fear of fi nancial crisis and the loss of jobs and lives. Many are asking where is God, in the darkness and despair the world is currently experiencing. There are harmful speculations that see plague and virus solely in pharisaic simplistic terms as the wrath of an angry and fi ckle God for the hardened transgressions of others. This paranoid anxiety and morbid fear of death arise from our own free choices of turning inwards towards self, while excluding others and God’s plan for wholesome happiness and for harmony in His Creation. The prevailing scenario of panic fl ows from the folly of collective acts of humanity repeating the underlying pattern of original sin of the world. We have succumbed to the temptation of overly self-protection, self-glory and vaulting ambition. Our lifestyles have become an obsessive focus on ego, through which suff ering and the evil of death enters the world. This is contrary to the message of self-giving service even unto death for values of unity and equality for the common good that the New Life of Easter beckons us to. A life of community- caring and sharing, mirroring His unending Love ensures this solemn Easter promise of eternal happiness. Our preparation for the Easter event provides us insights into recognising the fallibility of our fallen nature, owing to human disobedience of His life-giving laws. It has caused a concrete alienation within self and relational fi ssures between man, Creation and God. Surely our acts have consequences, but God is much more graceful than we are. Evil and suff ering have never been willed by God our loving Father, who always saves; He has revealed His all-embracing love, merciful forgiveness and compassion in the life, death and Resurrection of His Son Jesus. The One who seeks to bring us abundant life (John 10:10) is not a party to an un-redemptive suff ering. He may not take away unavoidable suff ering and inconveniences, but He can transform it to draw greater good out of it. The clarion call of the mystery of salvation to the fullness of life is the need for conversion and repentance for our many failings, and concrete actions of reconciliation and restoration of our disordered orientations.

8 · THE EXAMINER · APR 04 - 17, 2020 On our part, there has been a failure to become aware of the rising peril of Climate Change EDITORIAL and a gross neglect for the Earth by our destruction of eco-systems and environmental pollution. There is a wilful focus on profi ts and not on human development. Due to our unbridled technological endeavours playing God, our experiments have gone awry and have endangered human health. The traumatizing of children and economic injustice are all a human malaise, responsible for bringing on the present state of distress. The Easter event of the great salvifi c act of His Son Jesus Christ convinces us that God is at work in the world. We need to discern where God is moving in our lives and in the current pandemic to bring healing to the vulnerable, preventing of future illness, and join God’s arc of morality, spirituality and healing. This surely involves trusting faith and persevering prayer, unwavering hope and action. God is at work in the world, seeking healing and wholeness, inspiring physicians, researchers, nurses and other healthcare givers, fi rst responders and compassionate friends. God’s work involves us. Prayer is not an excuse for passivity or inaction. While it is important to pray, to trust and to hope in God’s grace and loving power to heal us and our situation. We are called to be responsible stewards of our personal lives and the lives of our fellow human beings. We are God’s agents in healing the world. Passionate faith calls us to mission. Prayer calls us to action. Our Easter faith in the dying and rising of Christ is not just to recall it but committedly live it. The frightened and dispirited Apostles after the Crucifi xion, who locked themselves behind closed doors, discovered the Risen Christ appearing in their midst, summoning them to go out and preach with courage the Good News of the reality of undying Hope and healing through the action of building communities in love, caring and peace. We live in an interdependent world. There is no solitary or isolated person or nation. We are all part of an intricate fabric of relatedness; our joys and sorrows are one. Accordingly, we are to balance localism with global concerns, and evaluate all our decisions in terms of the common good, as well as personal gain. Our response to the Coronavirus must include larger and larger circles of a caring community, focusing on other nations, as well as our own. As we continue our battle to eliminate this global affl iction, we will begin to weaken the equally dangerous virus of personal and communal individualism and balance our self-affi rmation of a narrow and restricted concept of ‘self fi rst’ with an equally powerful and inclusive love of all. We are all in it together in a transparent solidarity, sharing our eff orts and expertise to mitigate the dreaded destructive force of this recent plague’s visitation on humanity. God is at work, seeking our well-being and enlarging our spirits. While we need to take care of our own self, we must look beyond our own immediate family relationships and our communal and national good to the largest circles of planetary care. Our Resurrection response should be one that is of a human-Divine participation and collaboration.

The Synop c Gospels are deliberate when they narrate the fear of Jesus in Gethsemane before His arrest (Mk 14:34; Mt 26:37). The Gospel of Luke shows the fear of Jesus even more vividly (Lk 22:44).
