On the 19th June 2020, Pope Francis agreed the beatification of Father Jordan would himself come to be known by a new religious name that embodied his values and spirituality—Francis Mary of the Cross—and the communities he founded would come to be known simply as Salvatorians. Father Francis Jordan was born on 16 June 1848 in Gurtweil. After ordination to the priesthood on 21 July 1878 and motivated by a desire to make Jesus Christ known and loved by all people and everywhere, he founded the Society of the Divine Saviour (Salvatorians) in 1881, and the Congregation of the Sisters of the Divine Saviour (Salvatorian Sisters) in 1888. He also organized groups of lay people to take part in the Church´s mission of evangelization using all ways and means. Since Father Jordan’s death in Switzerland in 1918, the family of Salvatorian priests, brothers, sisters, and lay members have long honoured the holiness and witness of Father Jordan, seeking to live out his desire that Salvatorians act as “apostles for our times” and “diligently and wisely use all ways and means which the love of Christ inspires to glorify God.” Father Jordan’s life and ministry was marked by an expansive spirit of universality and inclusivity. His vision of what the Church could and should be was based on the conviction that every Christian, regardless of their state of life, was called to proclaim the Gospel in their own time and place. The beatification process of Father Jordan opened in 1942 and in 2011, Pope Benedict XVI officially announced that Fr. Jordan "lived a holy life," acknowledged the "heroicity of his virtues" and declared him "Venerable”. The ceremony of th Beatification will take place on 15 May 2021 at the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, Rome, and it will be presided over by Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, Cardinal Vicar of Rome. Anticipating what we now think of as the Universal Call to Holiness and the New Evangelization, Father Jordan is truly an Apostle of the Divine Saviour, inviting all others to come to know “the one true God” and Jesus Christ, whom he has sent. And which by permanently assuring-to the Holy See a position de facto and de jure which shall guarantee absolute independence for the fulfilment of its exalted mission in the world permits the Holy See to consider as finally and irrevocably settled the Roman Question which arose in 1870 by the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom, of Italy, under the Dynasty of the House of Savoy; Whereas it was obligatory, for the purpose of assuring the absolute and visible independence of the Holy See. Because abusive behavior has been going on and covered up for so long, it has entered into the system, and we are now observing something like an DEL VANGELO epidemic outbreak of a disease. What we see shows that the Church adminis tration to some degree had lost its compass. Priests used other people's lives Atti del corso annuale di formazione for their own purposes and needs, and the hierarchy was to some extent cov- per i nuovi Vescovi ering it up. It may be simplistic, but I think it is the correct perception, that what we do in terms of safeguarding measures, cleaning up and investigating, we don't do it with a fullycommitted heart and with full conviction; we hesitate to re ally get into the mess and admit the scale of its impact. We try to do it as if it were an add-on. We turn it on when we think we need it, switch it off when we don't. It's in the Church's DNA, it's inbuilt, but we don't use it; that's what people perceive. While it is true that for years many people in the Church have committed themselves to helping with healing and justice for victims, there is still the im pression that we are working primarily out of a sense of obligation, because the law and the public require certain measures.

Responding to questions on May 14 at a meeting with 1,700 priests and lay leaders of the Diocese of Rome gathered at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the pope said he realized the negative social implications of technology a few days earlier when Pope Francis he was greeting teens participating in a program of the international network of “Scholas Occurrentes.” “They were all there waiting for me,” he said. “When I arrived, they made noise, as young people do. • Wielding the Temporal Sword
WIELDING THE TEMPORAL SWORD AN ANALYSIS OF THE CREATION OF VATICAN CITY STATE IN RELATION TO THE CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE ON STATEHOOD AND CATHOLIC DOCTRINE ON THE RELATION BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE Master Thesis Political Theory Guido As August 15th 2016 Supervisor: Prof. dr. M.L.J. Wissenburg Abstract The Lateran Treaty of 1929 between Italy and the Roman Catholic Church constitutes the creation of Vatican City State. This thesis gives an account of the negotiations leading up to the signing of the Treaty. The creation of the City State draws our attention to two specific concepts: statehood and the separation of Church and state. The Catholic perspective on these concepts is presented and compared to other dominant theories of the concepts The Catholic perception of statehood in the early 20th century was based on the work of Fr. Taparelli, a Jesuit scholar who was heavily inspired by Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). The thesis concludes that there is a discrepancy between this theoretical conception of statehood, and the creation of Vatican City State. This can be explained by the fact that obtaining statehood was instrumental to the Holy See’s ambition of becoming sovereign. Catholic doctrine on the relation between Church and state has always rejected the idea of a full separation. Papal teachings have traditionally promoted a differentiation between a spiritual and temporal sphere of power, each supreme in its own domain, but cooperating in harmony. Depending on one´s interpretation, the creation of Vatican City is in line with this doctrine. Key words: Lateran Treaty, Vatican City State, separation of Church and State, statehood, sovereignty 2 Contents Chapter 1.
