Joseph Hindley is likely to have been born in the second quarter of 1867. The birth of a Joseph Hindley was registered at Northwich, Cheshire, (Vol 8A Page 230). In 1994 I searched registers at Northwich Registry Office and found Joseph in book 20 of Weaverham births, page 50. Unfortun ately I was only able to discover that his birth was between the dates 29.05.1866 and20.05.1868.

Joseph was baptised at Weaverham Church on 12 January 1868 listed on page 104 of the Church Register for Births (see below). He was the fourth child of twelve. BGGBGGBBBGBB

Joseph spent his early years in Weaverham at Keepers Cottage in Beech Lane (opposite Owley Wood), where his father was a Gamekeeper on the Marbury Estate.

The 1871 Census told us that Joseph was aged 3 years, born at Weaverham and he was living with his parents in Beech Lane, Weaverham.

In the 1881 Census Joseph was 13, and still living with his parents in Beech Lane, Weaverham.

By the time of the 1891 Census Joseph was 23 and working on Anglesey as a gamekeeper. He was described as a visitor at the house of Jane and family. It is quite likely that he was a lodger.

JOSEPH HINDLEY (1867 – 1949) 1867JOSE/2

Whilst on Anglesey Joseph met a Holyhead girl, Margaret Jane Evans. Margaret’s birth certificate is shown below.

Margaret Jane Evans was born on 27th February 1870, the daughter of William Evans (who used to be a Station Master) and Margaret Evans formerly Owen. She was living at 52 Forth y Felin, Holyhead.

1891 June 5th - Anglesey Marriages Joseph Hindley married Margaret Jane Evans at Llanfihangel-Yn-Nhowyn. (Just east of Holyhead)

Joseph was 24 and Margaret was 21 years old. Margaret was the daughter of William Evans, (a Book-Keeper in 1891). According to the marriage entry Margaret was also a gamekeeper. At the time of marriage they were living at Trosyrhllt, Mona Terrace.

During the next nine years Joseph and Margaret had 6 children; Margaret Mary (1892), Rose (1894), David (1897), twins Joseph Herbert and William Frank (1899), and Henry Gordon Roberts (1900). They were born at , east of Holyhead.

At the time of the 1901 Census Joseph and Margaret were living at 2 Warren Cottage, Boston Terrace, in the rural district of Holyhead, Angelsey. David had died but five of their six children were with them. Joseph was a gamekeeper,33, and Margaret was 31 years old.

The 1911 Census told us that Joseph and Margaret were at The Cottage, Holyhead, and that the five children were still at home. It is likely that “The Cottage” was the same as the Warren Cottage in the 1901 Census. Joseph was 43 years old and Margaret was 41. They had been married for 19 years.
