LLANEILIAN SLIPWAY Since the start of the County Council powered craft registration and launching scheme Council have been responsible for the distribution of keys for the bollard at Llaneilian Slipway through the Llaneilian Slipway Partnership. This was originally established as a partnership between local residents, the Community Council and Anglesey County Council to allow local residents to continue to launch and recover craft from Porth Eilian. Unfortunately, due to the lack of warden and enforcement support from the Maritime Department of Anglesey County Council, the bollard system has been abused and was seen to be no longer working. At a meeting arranged at the end of the 2015 season to discuss these issues with the Maritime Department the Community Council were informed that the longstanding scheme was unlikely to continue for the 2016 season due to the department being challenged to maximise income and minimise expenditure. The Community Council subsequently received a document from the Maritime Department presenting four possible options for consideration: Option 1. Suggested closing the slipway Option 2 / Option 3. Suggested that Llaneilian Community Council take over all the responsibility for the slipway. Option 4. That the slipway become part of the powercraft launching scheme administered centrally by Anglesey County Council. Following long and detailed discussion of all four proposals at a special Slipway Partnership meeting option 1 was recommended to the Community Council and that the slipway should no longer be available for the vehicular launching of vessels. The main factors considered were: large combinations parking on the road, beach and car park; intimidation of council members and staff; lack of respect for the bollard and the system; conflict with other users of Traeth Eilian; and no enforcement and management of slipway users. Following further discussion at a Community Council meeting the Slipway Partnership’s recommendation was ratified and the decision passed on to Anglesey County Council. A senior member of the Maritime Department was invited to, and attended, the following month’s meeting where the implications of the decision were discussed. It is regrettable, that due to financial austerity, arrangements agreed between the Community Council and Anglesey County Council at the very start of the powercraft registration and launching scheme will not continue for the 2016 season or the foreseeable future.
