Captain William Thomas (1822-1893) was the son of Lewis Thomas, Cae Pant. By 1858 he was involved in shipbuilding and by the mid 1860s was managing more than a dozen vessels. By 1870 he was living at Pone Taldrwst and the owner of a warehouse and yards at Amlwch Port. By 1872 he had bought the Treweek yard and dry dock and had a ship chandlery business and close connections with Duddon/Millom in Cumbria and William Thomas of (born ). In the 1880s the firm base established by Captain Thomas was expanded and developed by his sons William (who had trained as a naval designer) and Lewis. The collection also includes family papers including documents about Bryn Eilian and other family business interests. Some documents cover both the shipping business and the household. [The majority of the documents are badly damaged by previous damp storage].

WD 2/113 1949 Feb. 14 COPY LETTER: [Messrs.Wm.Thomas and Sons, Amlwch Port] to Mr.Oakes following a visit by Mr.Oakes to the yard and asking if there was any prospect of work. Attached LETTER: Admiralty Regional Officer (), Imperial Buildings, Mount Stuart Sq., to Messrs.Wm.Thomas and Sons, Amlwch Port stating that Mr. COakes had passed their letter on to him. He states that the provision of additional employment in Amlwch Port was bound up with the more general question of providing employment in Anglesey which was being considered by the District Committee of the Welsh Board for Industry. No action re Amlwch Port was planned or envisaged by the Admiralty. If the dry dock was to be brought into use again it would have to be done by private enterprise but any proposals for this would be considered by the Admiralty on their merits and might receive support. He would continue keep to the need in mind.

WD 2/120 n.d. COPY of letter received from Captain Arthur T.Jones originally sending amended paysheets and apologising for the errors. They had been told at that they were entitled to mileage/run money but was returning it as the recipient did not think they were entitled to it. He details his attempts to sort out the income tax and suggests settling the matter when he re-joins the vessel. He asks if he can find A.B.s. and firemen in that area as 'the crowd to be found generally in Glasgow have been found to be trouble makers and agitators of the worst kind, and cause trouble at the slightest excuse'. He hopes the repairs on the vessel had started.

The amount the railway charged and the inconvenient access to the station and increasing traffic with Liverpool made the steamer a good prospect, calling at Amlwch to deliver goods on the way. It was calculated that the two places will keep a good steamer going regularly with goods and passengers and pay a good profit. It was proposed to offer shares to the trades ? persons, and suggested that a public meeting be held. Document defective: Torn.

He had had a long chat with Frances and Co. and he was to let them know his decision in a week or so: Both partners talked matters over favourably to his side, as he understood they had good connections and they could give him plenty to do and offer 30s. per week and 25 % commission. Since then he had seen their late chartering clerk who had not given a good account of them. He had since seen his cousin John D.Thomas who confirmed what the clerk had said but had intended to try Messrs.Frances and Co. again rather than be out altogether. Every Captain he met wanted him to start by himself and if all who he had seen kept their promise he was convinced it would be a good success. He had found a suitable office, he asks for his uncle and cousin's views and asks what they think of the name John Edwards and Co.
