The Morris in May Bampton has three world-renowned Morris dance teams. On the Monday of the Spring Bank Holiday (25th May), the Bampton Traditional Morris team start the dancing at 8:30am at the junction of Bushey Row and New Road, and continue through the day at various locations in the village – including many of the grand old houses and outside the pubs. The programme for the day’s events can be obtained from The Horseshoe Pub and The Town Hall. In the evening, visiting teams join in the dancing and ‘make merry’. And do try the ‘fertility cake’, which is carried on a sword around the streets with the dancers. (Beware if you are a lady, as rumour has it that if you eat it you may return next year with a baby in tow!) Also. watch out for the Fool, or he may hit you with his swinging bladder!

Going wild for recycling These inquisitive lemurs had fun investigating recycling boxes and food recycling bins as they helped to launch a new waste collection service at Cotswold Wildlife Park, provided by West Oxfordshire District Council. The Park, near Burford, has signed up to the service to further increase their recycling as we continue to expand our commercial waste and recycling in the District. Staff at the park, which is home to around 260 different animal species and attracts around 330,000 visitors each year, will use the service to recycle as much waste as possible including food waste from the restaurant and leftovers from the animal feed. Jamie Craig, Curator of Cotswold Wildlife Park, said: “We’ve always been keen to recycle as much as we can and the service provided by the District Council offers an extensive range of opportunities for us to do this. “Being a large visitor attraction, with almost 100 staff and additional volunteers, waste is inevitable and we want to make sure it is dealt with in a way that protects the environment. Most of the food waste will come from the restaurant. The animals tend to eat most of their food – but there will be the odd bits of peel and shells from species like the fruit bats, which are a bit fussier about what they eat!” The Council provides commercial waste and recycling services to around 900 local businesses, as well as some secondary and primary schools, in addition to household collections across the District. Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Cotswold Wildlife Park is an important visitor attraction and one of the largest businesses of its kind in the county, and we are delighted to have them on board with our commercial waste and recycling services. “We are always looking at ways to improve recycling rates and offer more opportunities for recycling and believe this will be a successful partnership. I am sure visitors to the Park will be pleased to know that everything is being done to ensure as much waste as possible is being recycled.” 25

Be in the know about what’s going on in your neighbourhood Residents in West Oxfordshire are being encouraged to ‘Be in the know’ about planning applications near their homes by registering for email alerts from the District Council. By signing up to the free service online at www.westoxon.gov.uk/beintheknow, people can receive email notifications of planning applications registered within 500 metres of their home in West Oxfordshire. At the click of a button, you can then find out more information and register to track the application, submit and view comments simply online and follow its progress from start to finish. The Council is running a ‘Be in the know’ campaign to inform residents about the service following the recent launch of a new online planning system. Cllr Warwick Robinson, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Housing, said: “Planning is such an important issue and many of our residents are interested in what is going on close to their homes. The email alerts service gives them the chance to keep abreast and ensure they do not miss out on any applications registered with the Council. “With the new planning system in place, it’s now very simple to follow applications online and what’s more it gives people an easy way to have their say during the consultation period. It’s quick and easy to register, and we hope people find it helpful.” As well as planning alerts, residents can also sign up to receive information about changes to bin collections due to bank holidays and/or weekly reminders about waste and recycling collections to help when putting their bins out.

33 Bampton officially one of the best places to live While Chipping Norton is still licking its wounds from being included in the latest ‘crap towns’ list, the village of Bampton is celebrating after it was named 5th in the Sunday Times 50 Best Rural Places to Live in Britain. The list, which put Aberaeton in Caredigion in the top spot, named the ‘real Downton’ in 5th place for its traditional market square, stone cottages, local butcher and fantastic pubs. It was also noted that the village is surrounded by good quality state and private schools. The parish of Bampton is probably best known for being the setting of Downton Abbey. Aside from this though, the parish is a vibrant community with plenty of amenities, traditions and shops. There is a youth club, which has its own venue in the former primary school building, as well as a skate park to keep the teenagers happy. There is also a thriving football team, which also has an under 16s team. But Bampton also has some quirky traditions which welcome newcomers to the village, such as the Pumpkin Club, which holds a weigh-in to find the largest local pumpkin every October. There is also an annual ‘shirt race’ in which teams have to wear night shirts and race each other in un-powered transport, such as a pram. There are also some more traditional social activities in the parish as well, such as a thriving Morris side and a gardening club. The parish also has a regular magazine called The Bampton Beam, which has information of all the events and clubs in the area.

The Oxford Hearing Centre is a totally independent hearing aid dispensing practice that specialises in individually designed hearing health care rehabilitation, auditory training programme, and hearing instruments not available through the NHS. You are guaranteed completely impartial and professional advice for a complete and holistic solution to your hearing difficulty. Oxford Hearing Centre is able to select systems and instruments from a range of internationally recognised manufacturing companies worldwide to ensure that you can confidently receive the most up to date help available. All new technologically innovative hearing instruments are assessed and evaluated very carefully before they are included to ensure they are reliable and of good quality before they are offered at the Oxford Hearing Centre. There are many different reasons for acquiring hearing impairment, and the correct solution to an individual’s needs is equally varied. That is why it is of the utmost importance to have your hearing properly assessed and evaluated thoroughly before a decision is made about which hearing system and rehabilitation programme is the most appropriate for you. On many occasions, it is a build-up of wax preventing the sound from reaching your eardrum in the first place. It is also the main limiting factor to the continued satisfactory performance and operation of a hearing aid and up to 80% of all hearing aid repairs are as a result of wax ingression to the device. The Oxford Hearing Centre has a dedicated and fully equipped treatment room for the provision of ear-canal examination using a video-otoscopic camera, excessive earwax can be removed safely and effectively either by specialist water irrigation system, or by an instrument under the camera.

Cat survives epic attic adventure A Woodstock family are giving their cat Boo a lot of love and cuddles after the little five year old moggy went missing for six weeks and was eventually found….in the neighbour’s attic! Living up to her name, the little cat gave its owners quite a shock when she went missing. Seven-year old Darcey Groves was devastated when Boo didn’t come home for several days. And then the whole family became more and more worried when there was no sign of Boo for a month. The whole family put up posters and Darcy’s mum, Katharine Grives, admits that even the dog had started to miss Boo. Six weeks after the cat went missing, a local vet called to say a neighbour found Boo in their attic and rushed her in, but was sadly quite unwell after her ordeal. But after just three days of antibiotics and fluids, the cat was back on its feet and feeling better. She is now back with her family and doing well. 48 Return on the Auction of Promises The fantastic Auction of Promises is back! This yearly event raises a substantial amount of money for the upkeep of Chipping Norton Lido and is hosted by arguably the most famous/controversial town celebrity, journalist and presenter Jeremy Clarkson. He will once again be taking the hammer and auctioning off some great lots from a nights out to a once in a lifetime holiday. Jeremy has been a long-time supporter of the Lido and even drove a car into it as a stunt for Top Gear. The Lido was saved by local people in 2002 when the Council opened a leisure centre in the town and decided it was time to close the pool. Both current generations and many before it have had the Lido as an essential summer meeting place and so for years, a charity has been run to keep it open. Today the pool is thriving and the company of volunteers were awarded a West Oxfordshire Business award in 2013 in recognition of their efforts to make the pool environmentally friendly. But the good work can only continue with annual donations and the Auction of Promises earns a great deal towards the yearly amount needed to keep the outdoor pool open. To grab your ticket, head to Jaffe and Neale Bookshop. Tickets are £15 which includes wine and nibbles.

The grade II listed building has rotten sash window frames which had to be replacing as well as crumbling concrete that needed rendering and internal walls over-due a white wash. The building has also been repainted on the outside and all the entrances have got new doors. When the old outside rendering was being removed, a previously undiscovered entrance was revealed, which has not been used for so long, there are no records of the door existing at all! The Building Records have been amended to include the new entrance. After playing out of a less than perfect building for some time, Chippy FC will now be getting a brand new building thanks to the Walterbush Road housing development. Plans for 228 houses were approved by West Oxfordshire District Council at their March meeting and part of the agreement is to build a new clubhouse for the team. Along with the clubhouse, Archstone and Bellway Homes will also build a skate park, update recreation equipment and make improvements to the existing recreation ground. Under the agreement, there will also be funds to provide ‘creative education space’ for the general public, and this will be in association with Chipping Norton Theatre. The development will also see a pedestrian/cycle route built between the football club and the rugby club as well as the development of several ecological spaces to keep the area vibrant.

New eBook about life at the MG factory released A new pictorial study of life at the MG factory has been written by ex-employee – Brian Moylan. Having started work at the factory in 1950, Brian went on to have a successful career in the racing department and worked on several cars, including the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally winner. The book, Those Were The Days, contains 160 photos depicting factory life and the people who came from all walks of life to work there. Many of the pictures in the book have never been published before and show the factory from its opening in 1930 until its closure in 1980. The book was originally published in 2007 and has been an essential part of an MG fan’s bookcase ever since. Now, Veloce Digital has published Those Were the Days as an ebook so you can download it onto your digital device. The book is available on amazon, Google Plan and is also in the iBookstore. 51 Bond fans have focused their attention on recently as rumour has it several scenes from the new James Bond film have been shot there. Film crews were spotted in the area and there were rumours on twitter that several rather fancy sports cars were also spotted as well as crew with 007 badges, which was frankly quite a giveaway! Bond himself, Daniel Craig, was also seen filming at the palace. However, he arrived and left in a car with blacked out windows, which meant fans were unable to get a closer look at him.

007 spotted at the Palace

The shoot was allegedly one of the car chase scenes for what will be the 24th Bond movie, due to be premiered next winter. Further rumours suggest there was also a casino scene being shot at the Palace. Blenheim Palace is no stranger to the movies and has been a location for over 20 films. Notable appearances include Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Avengers and Gulliver’s Travels. There have also been numerous documentaries filmed there, most centering around it as the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill. There was also a French movie about time travel filmed there as well as the 1994 series of Black Beauty. Oh, and of course Inspector Morse also paid a visit in 1995. 52 Carterton Groups and Organisations

Local brewery aims to crack the crisps market Wychwood Brewery, based in Witney, is teaming up with crisp experts Burts to produce the perfect bar snack to accompany one of its ales. The crisps are spit-roast steak flavoured and are exclusively available in Marston’s pubs. Simon Knight, sales and marketing director for Burts Chips, said: “At Burts we are passionate about introducing new and innovative crisp flavours, never compromising on quality to produce the nation’s tastiest chips. “With a proven track record of extremely successful license partnerships with Guinness and Levi Roots, we are confident that our collaboration with Hobgoblin, as one of the fastest growing premium cask beers, for their maiden snack launch will perform exceptionally well. We look forward to helping the Hobgoblin brand bring taste to the nation, a goal also close to the heart of Burts.” Chris Keating, marketing manager for Wychwood Brewery, added: “In our first step into the UK snack market we are certain that Burts’ moorishly crunchy crisps will prove popular with current Hobgoblin fans as well as attracting new customers to the brand.”

61 Pooh Sticks World Championships moves to Witney One of the more quirky Oxfordshire sporting events, the annual Pooh Sticks World Championship, has found itself a new home in Witney. The competition has been held annually at Day’s Lock near Wittenham Clumps for over 30 years. However, a decision was made earlier this year that the event has grown too popular for the current location and organisers warned this March’s event will have to take place somewhere else. The Rotary Club of Oxford Spires, who have organised the competition in recent years, started looking for a new location right away. Langel Common, based between Witney town and Cogges estate, met all the criteria for the new site. It has ample car parking, a nice long bridge and most important of all, a gentle current to carry the sticks under the bridge. The location has been used for the filming of Downton Abbey and nearby are planning to organise events to accompany the day. But best of all, for the first time ever, the competition can take place in the summer! High boat traffic at Days Lock in the warmer months meant that the competition could only take place between October and March. However, there are no boats on the new stretch of river, which means it will hopefully be a warm, sunny day. Pooh Sticks is a game that originated in the work of A.A. Miline in one of his famous series of Winnie-the-Pooh books. Although the bridge in the book where Pooh Sticks originated is in Sussex, Long Wittenham has been the home of the official championships for 31 years. The championship was started by lockkeeper Lynn David, who noticed that a lot of visitors to Days Lock played the game over the bridge. Lynn was a strong supporter of The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and so he set up the event to raise money for the charity. The Rotary Club of Sinodun took over the organisation after Lynn retired and in more recent times, the Rotary Club of Oxford Spires took over.
