Moulsford Events Dave Reynolds Summer is on its way………. The Events Team are now working hard on the schedule for the summer socials, but looking back we have already had some great events so far this year, in particular the monthly winter socials have been very well attended and certainly shall be something that we shall repeat next year. Particular thanks to Jo Baker who stood in as our ‘Quiz Master’ in March and did a tremendous and entertaining job in leading our spring quiz night.

Looking forward to our summer socials, these start on Friday 26th April with our ‘Bangers and Bubbles Night’, please do come along to vote on the Fizz we serve throughout the season. Our summer socials shall be held every Friday night until the end of September. Their is a wedding, however, being held at the Pavilion on Friday 21st June, so we have booked an old London bus to have a trip to a number of pubs in the local area. This shall be a fun night where a pub meal shall be available if you wish. Tickets are £10 but are limited. Please contact Debbie on [email protected] or 07786 228627 to book.

There are a number of other events being planned for the summer socials and we do expect to be able to have a food offering at each. A particular highlight is our ‘Moulsfest Camping Evening’ on Friday 5th July where a band shall be playing in the pavilion and we shall have various competitions for villagers, both adults and children! (see page 7) We do also hope to have a number of stalls, if anyone would like to have a stall – please contact Bernie on [email protected]. Children are more than welcome to sell unwanted toys and books, or even run their own games stall. Please do come along and bring your tent! There will be hot chocolate and marshmallows before bed and bacon rolls in the morning!

On Saturday 18th May at 6.00pm we have a great presentation by Tom Williams. Tom who many of you will know, has grown up in the village and is an up and coming Rally car driver. Tom has kindly offered to share his experiences and this promises to be a great night (a bar shall be available).

Finally do put Saturday 13th July at 2.00pm in your diary, where we shall be screening the Women's final of Wimbledon- plenty of Pimms and strawberries shall be available!

If you have any questions or queries, please contact the Moulsford Events Committee Secretary, Bernadette Sachse on [email protected]. Also, keep an eye on the Moulsford Village Facebook page.

From Your Parish Council Miles Powell Parish Council activities in the last month have included completing the pavilion driveway project, replacing wooden posts in the car park, progressing repair to playground equipment, reviewing planning applications, dealing with ad hoc queries and planning for the forthcoming local elections in May 2019.

Parish Council Projects Pavilion driveway project has now completed and the full benefit of having an illuminated driveway to walk up (and down!) will most likely be seen in the later evenings. The high kerbing now in place is there to dissuade parking along the driveway and on the grass and we don’t now expect to have to buy and replace posts up the driveway every few months! The illuminated bollards that are in place are much more robust than the fence posts.

Getting Involved! As you’ll realise in this edition of Moulsford News, we have had six prospective candidates come forward to stand for election for the five Parish Councillor positions in the 2nd May local elections. Many thanks to these candidates for coming forward! As the sharp eyed will realise, all of the current Parish Council are stepping down after this 4 year team of office so my thanks to fellow Councillors for their support and efforts on behalf of the village over the last 4 years! Couple of diary dates as follows: Wednesday 8th May, 8pm at Pavilion – Annual Parish Council Meeting where formal handover to new Parish Council takes place. Wednesday 15th May, 8pm at Pavilion, Annual Parish meeting where village organisations report on their previous year of activity.

Finally! Enjoy the upcoming Moulsford Events Committee (MEC) events and the lighter evenings as we head towards another season of Pavilion socials. As always, any Parish queries then do get in touch with any of the councillors by email or phone and we’ll do our best to help or point you in the right direction.

From the Vicar Andrew Petit My Dear Friends, I am writing this just a couple of days after the terrible fire that caused so much damage to Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. If we imagine a similar thing happening to Westminster Abbey or St Paul’s Cathedral, we can begin to understand, the enormous shock this must have caused to the people of Paris and indeed the whole nation. Such a building not only contains so much of the nation’s history, but in a country which has had such strong Christian roots, it acts as a symbol of the nation’s very identity.

It might be argued that in recent years, France has strayed a long way from those Christian roots, even more so than in our own nation, having had the trauma of the French revolution which did its very best to destroy the Christian heritage of the nation. This was partly because they thought it was so tied up with the monarchy. Indeed the revolutionaries decapitated 28 statues of kings in Notre Dame because they believed them to be portraying monarchs of France when in fact they were portraying Old Testament kings from the Bible! In the light of all this, it is fascinating how so many Parisians felt such personal grief at the fire and threatened destruction of the cathedral and how so many have contributed so quickly and so generously to the restoration fund for the cathedral.

It seems to me this is because Notre Dame is far more than a quintessential part of the Parisian skyline; far more even than a beautiful building embodying much of the history of France. There is a deeply felt recognition that Notre Dame embodies the very soul of the nation. This suggests to me that despite only a relatively small proportion of the French population continuing to be practising Catholics and indeed many outwardly ignoring or even opposing the Christian faith, when a crisis hits like the fire in Notre Dame, many realise that the loss of something of incalculable spiritual value is threatened.

Whilst Notre Dame is only a building (and Jesus himself was notably unimpressed by the great religious building of his day – the Temple in Jerusalem), perhaps it takes the threatened destruction of something visible and tangible to make people realise not only the value of the building but the value of all that it represents – in particular the Christian roots of the nation and the values that have grown from those roots, which in turn have shaped the very character of France.

The UK is not the same as France, but nevertheless we share a similar Christian heritage and culture. Like France, we too have seen many in recent decades turn away from an active Christian faith. As we share in the sadness of our French cousins, perhaps we also should reflect on the infinite value of our Christian beliefs, history and values and on what we are doing to preserve that heritage. With warmest regards,

Andrew Petit, Vicar of Moulsford [email protected] Tel: 01491 651216

Westminster Update Ed Vaizey MP

Some very good news – the Government have announced a £218million investment in roads and bridges for southern . This is not only great news for and the Vale of White Horse but for the whole of Oxfordshire. This is a great example of how councils working together with MPs, local businesses, community groups and residents can submit a significant bid to the Government resulting in success.

A number of constituents have contacted me with their concerns about the proposed change in Scanning services available at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford: the service was previously provided by Oxford University Hospital Trust but it was recently announced that NHS had accepted a tender from a private provider InHealth to run the services. Whilst in principle I do not oppose competitive tendering for medical services I am concerned about the handling of this tender process by NHS England. I wrote to NHS England to ask for an explanation and I am pleased the decision is now under review. No changes will be made to the current PET- CT service at the Churchill while this process is ongoing.

In Parliament Brexit continues to be the issue that dominates both the headlines and Parliamentary time. As I write this column some weeks in advance of its publication it is difficult to predict where we will be when you read this. I will continue to support the Prime Minister’s efforts to secure a workable withdrawal agreement and, if need be, vote to increase Parliamentary control of the process to avoid a no deal exit. I provide regular Brexit updates via email so please do contact my office if you would like to be added to that list.

In the constituency I have enjoyed visiting the Railway Centre for the unveiling of their new train (by none other than Prue Leith), Wallingford Museum, and the reopening of the recently renovated The Extraordinary Hare Pub in West Hendred. I have also met with GPs in Didcot, taken a walking tour along the A420 to see first-hand residents’ concerns, and been campaigning alongside local colleagues for the Council elections.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any pressing issues that you would like help with. Either myself or one of my team will get back to you as soon as possible and do what we can to assist. You can contact me on any matter at the House of Commons, SW1A 0AA, [email protected] or 01235 768 888. Email is the quickest and most reliable way to get in touch, as I keep a very close eye on my emails and can reply very quickly. Details of my activities in Parliament can be read on my website, https://www.vaizey.com. I also send out occasional general interest emails about developments in the Wantage and Didcot Constituency. If you would like to be added to the distribution list, please complete the online form at http://bit.ly/EdVaizeyMP.

Parish Council Elections - 2nd May 2019 Following on from Miles’s article on page two, please see here a short introduction from each of the candidates who are standing for election to Moulsford Parish Council on 2nd May. Joanne Baker - Hello! I’m Joanne Baker. I’ve lived in Moulsford for nearly 10 years. I’m married to Nigel and we have two young children. I’ve always felt at home in Moulsford and feel privileged to be bringing up my family in this community. Contributing to that community is important to me. For me, that has involved being on the Events Committee, helping to establish and maintain the Pavilion wildflower meadow and more. I love where I live and want to help others enjoy it, but also to appreciate and care about our village environment - natural and built - and what makes our place special. I am standing for election as I believe it’s vital that we the villagers of Moulsford have our own Parish Council to ensure that Moulsford’s interests are represented in the face of local and regional development. I am deeply concerned about the impacts of developments, especially housing and traffic, on our local environment and access to services, especially education. I want to ensure the PC has a strong say in local planning issues and also to engage with other local councils to ensure Moulsford and other surrounding villages are properly represented in local education planning. I also believe the PC has a crucial role in supporting and enhancing our community. I do appreciate that things change. However, my strong view is that a balance must be kept so that the distinctiveness of our village and its community is not lost and that it remains a great place to live.

Andrew Bryan - My family and I have lived in Moulsford for 13 years and appreciate the benefits and challenges of living in this lovely part of South Oxfordshire. Having spent most of my life in villages I understand the need to maintain the balance between preserving our way of life while ensuring we get the advantages of infrastructure developments, for example high speed internet and the Underhill sewage plant. As housing development expands across Oxfordshire the pressure on local services is increasing so we must ensure Moulsford residents have access to the schools, doctors and services we need. There are also things we can do as a community. Moulsford is a very supportive village but let’s not be complacent as there is always more we can do, from welcoming new residents, helping neighbours or picking up litter (as a dog owner my pet hate is dog poo!) On a personal level, I am a professional business advisor and have dealt with sensitive council matters including building planning. I am also a Trustee for Acre Housing, a charity providing and managing housing for the local charity Style Acre. I’d love to use my broad experience for the benefit of our community.

Sarah Elvy - I moved to Moulsford in 2004 with my husband Jon, our two sons and our two Westie dogs, just in time for the inaugural Friday night social. Our new neighbours took us along and introduced us to their friends, our sons were immediately welcomed to play football on the rec and I was invited to join the Events Committee which I quickly discovered, like many other newbies, is a great way to get to know Moulsford. We couldn’t believe our luck at finding such a friendly and thriving community. As well as living here in Underhill, I’m a director of two successful family businesses based in Moulsford so much of my life is invested here. The level of development planned for South Oxfordshire will undoubtedly have an impact on our lives, my particular concerns are traffic management, lack of parking, overwhelmed health and education services, plus - that old bugbear for rural businesses – poor internet speed. I’m keen to see that our parish council business – planning, crime prevention, maintenance of community property and spaces, campaigning for improved services and facilities – continues to be well run and provide good value for the village. I think that my experience of working across disciplines, working in small teams and finding effective solutions on tight budgets would serve me well if I am elected as a councillor for Moulsford Parish Council.

Moulsford News: May 2019 Page 4

Ben Partridge - My name is Ben Partridge. I work as a Systems Accountant for CRM Students, a property management company specialising in student accommodation.

In my spare time I play hockey for Wallingford and chess for Didcot Chess Club. I also enjoy getting out in to the country side and open water swimming at lake and the Thames. I am married with two daughters aged 7 and 3. We have enjoyed living in Moulsford for 5 years. Getting involved as much as possible in the social activities, for example, the Friday Night Social, the litter pick and other activities. I also attend the Men's Night at the Beetle and Wedge. The demographics of the village have changed even in the 5 years we have lived here. The increase in families and children have led to a greater need for the provision of child focused activities and improved safety along the main road. If elected to the Parish Council I see two priorities that I would promote: 1) a base for youth activity at The Pavilion. 2) a means to reduce speeding through the village. I look forward to serving the Parish.

Bernadette Sachse - I have lived in Moulsford for almost 10 years with my husband Mark and we have a 4 year old daughter Lucy. I work as a Personal Assistant. We are very happy living in such a friendly community and I am already keenly involved in keeping the thriving community spirit alive.

I started my involvement by becoming editor of this very newsletter and that was shortly followed by my joining of the village events committee as Secretary. I very much enjoy these roles which have led to my interest in becoming a parish councillor.

Whilst Moulsford’s social community is important to me, there are many other village matters I want to ensure we have a voice in such as major planning applications, infrastructure, social care, technology and preparing for the next generation. Our current parish councillors have done a great job of keeping affairs of the village in order over the last term and I hope to have the opportunity to continue this sterling effort serving as a councillor on behalf of everyone in the community.

Julie Twibell - I've lived in Moulsford for 24 years, moving from Hampshire in 1995. During my time here I have served on the village events and pavilion management committees and spent several years as distributor of Moulsford News. Since coming south from the Inner Hebrides in 1978 I have followed a career in community and hospital pharmacy, working variously at Frimley Park, Royal and Battle Hospitals, Broadmoor secure hospital and more recently local doctors' practices.

Outside work I enjoy walking my two Labradors Humphry and Blake whom some of you will have met, either on local footpaths or occasionally beside the river at The Beetle and Wedge. I also enjoy keeping fit having competed in local 5K and 10K events, finished the gruelling Commando challenge in Devon and climbed North Africa's highest peak, the 14,000-foot Mt. Toubqal. Now I've moved to a part-time job I want to spend some of my free hours working for and supporting our lovely village. The parish council is an important part of the community and its work goes largely unnoticed and unrecognised, yet we would be a much poorer place without it. Just as we would be without the volunteers of the events and pavilion management committees, the Moulsford news team, our footpath wardens and countless others who freely give of their time to make this village the welcoming, friendly and sociable place we are today. If I am elected, I will do what I can to make sure it stays that way.
