The Bornholm-Meeting September 2015 2 Purpose

Network of museums in the Baltic is a network between professional museums, following the ICOM standards, dealing with issues concerning Baltic Culture and history.

The aim is to strengthen the cooperation on an institutional level so that the museums in the network can take on common projects for the benefit of all.

The Bornholm-Meeting September 2015 7 Presentations and reports from the present museums  Foteviken Museum, a reconstructed Viking site and museum that is also telling about the area. The museum is open in the summertime, other times for schools and groups. Several projects, right now: Follow the Vikings. 4-year project www.destinationviking.com/projects/follow-the-vikings/about 19-20 November will be a conference. Time travelling, storytelling etc. Workshops.  Anders Wikström. Former Sigtuna Museum, now own company participating in projects: Concerning the church ruins in Sigtuna; how to use and how to preserve them. Report for the Swedish exhibition Agency about volunteers in museums.  Gotlands Museum. No volunteers, but 3 000 owners… The museum is run by an association, Föreningen Gotlands fornvänner. The latest exhibition a childrens’ exhibition: Ship & fun. It is about the sea and the maritime Gotland of all time and the target audience is children 3-10 years accompanied by an adult. Here children and adults can play together while learning what the sea has meant and still means to Gotland. Transport, fisheries, trade, tourism - but also how Gotland in all times has been dependent on and moved away to other countries and cultures for exchanges of different kinds. A true concept!

 Estonian Open Air Museum. Rural architecture and landscape, research. Counsellor for private house owners and NGO’s. Direct under the cultural ministry. Center for minorities. Work with integration. An actual project is to move a house from the Soviet time into the museum area.  Bornholms Museum. School-programs, lots of money in this right now. Three big projects:  New exhibition, building a new museum in cooperation with the art museum. In the fundraising phase right now.  Working on establishing a Baltic Archaeological center on Bornholm. Students from Warsaw, Gdansk, Lund, Århus. Funding through South Baltic Program.  Ceramics from 1869, new exhibition in the porcelain museum in Rønne.

The Bornholm-Meeting September 2015 8  Elblag Museum. Local and regional museum about archaeology and history. exhibition forming the most spectacular part. Old town was destroyed during WWII, and there’s lots of archaeology on the site.  Kunstmuseum Schwaan. Project on European Identity, tourism development in the rural area. ”Kuntsmühle” opened in 2002, 600 sqm exhibition space. Impressionists had an art colony in Schwaan. Member of Euro Art – Europäische Vereinigung der Künstlerkolonien. Also a museums park ca 1 ha. Also used for contemporary art exhibitions. 200 paintings and 300 drawings, security etc. follow modern standards. 10 000 visitors a year. Exhibitions: “Eau & Lumière”, the road of Impressionism in Europe. “North German artist colonies”

 Gävle Museum. Best collection of Swedish art outside Stockholm. Rebuilding the museum, now focusing a lot on cultural history. Regional museum, financed by the state and the region. Working with children and old people.  Stockholm City museum. 80-90 employees. The museum is being restored at the moment. Guided tours every day. Working with stories from Farsta, a suburb. Problem now that the government will introduce free entrance to the state owned museums – but not for the other museums. Also looking at for example opening hours and also how to handle social media.

Positive, to be further discussed during 2016.  Responsibilities for the board-museums. To be discussed at the board meeting 2016. New members – welcome & presentation  No new members since last year’s meeting

The web-site and other communication tools The network will never be more active than its members – the more you share the more benefits you’ll get! Since we do not have an employed coordinator, every museum contributes keeping the network going and active.

It was urged to start using the Facebook and to invite colleagues to like the page. Also every museum should have at least one administrator to the Facebook-page. The coordinator asked the museums to contribute to the page.

The web-page could be used more, by the communication forum http://balticmuseums.ning.com/forum etc. It’s there waiting to be used. It is an option to publish a new discussion also on the Facebook to activate it. Simply copy and paste the web-link into Facebook. It’s possible to use the forum and Facebook for all kind of information concerning museums. If there is an interesting event, please share it by publishing on the web http://balticmuseums.ning.com/events and then copy-paste on Facebook!

A new web-exhibition was discussed, but without a decision being made. To be further discussed next year. The previous web-exhibition is still available on the web-site: http://balticmuseums.ning.com/page/web-exhibition

Also a project-bank was asked for. Here already ongoing projects can be presented, and ideas and search for project-partners set up. (The coordinator has created a peoject- and ideas page and its open for every museum to add to it. http://balticmuseums.ning.com/page/projects-ideas )

The Bornholm-Meeting September 2015 10 Discussions  One common : the Baltic Sea  The network is an added value for each project, since we already have the network. Very important for Creative Europe. One can be full partner or associated partners  “What you pay is what you get” – a network is a resource ready to be used and it starts unfolding and sharing the more it is activated by the members  The purpose is the Baltic Sea Area- culture and history. We should stick to that. Bring together different kind of professions.

Planning for the coming year

Activities  The Board-meeting in spring. Dates 6-7 April  The autumn network meeting and conference. Dates still open – coordinator will check out other events to possibly avoid clashes.

Projects

Vikings in the Baltic - the age of innovation The exhibition will show the routes for trade and communication in the Baltic – built by the Vikings in the 8th-11th century AD. We will follow the Viking trails from the Baltic through the Finnish Gulf, Lake Ladoga and further down the Russian river systems. During these voyages, trading and alliances were formed during the meeting of different people. Themes like governance but also daily life reflects the result of these encounters. But what were the premises for this active communication and expansion around the Baltic. The explanation for such an expansion should be sought in the contemporary society and with the supreme skills of shipbuilding and navigation. How did they navigate in these new territories and how did the cultural meeting take place. The exhibition will tell this story, highlighted by significant archaeological finds. The Bornholm-Meeting September 2015 11 Follow the Vikings The objective of the Follow the Vikings project is to make the transnational Viking heritage accessible and understandable to a world-wide audience. This will contribute to maintaining and developing Europe as the No. 1 Global Heritage Tourism Destination. It will boost local economies and local employment and, through the networking activities, will help knowledge transfer and quality improvement at heritage sites throughout Europe. From Apprenticeship to mastery The project would assemble the existing knowledge and methodologies of practical conservation/restoration of museums and other organizations dealing with restoration/renovation/conservation as well as specialised educational institutions in different countries. The aim of the project is to raise competence in the sphere of restoration and conservation as well as to continue practicing historic techniques which could be integrated into the results of studies on new technologies. Presentation of the next network-meeting; place, time and topic Is there a Baltic identity? might be a topic but the topic is to be decided by the board at the spring-meeting. Place discussed was Russia/Novgorod, but there might occure some difficulties with visas etc.

The Bornholm-Meeting September 2015 12 Guided tour on Bornholms Museum Bornholm Museum has the responsibility of the cultural history of Bornholm from both prehistoric as well as recent times. The museum works within the five pillars set in the Museum Act: Collection, Registration, Conservation, Research and Communication. The geographical context dictates a culture sphere with artefacts not only covering Bornholm, but the entire Baltic region.

Especially interesting is the vast collection of gold foil figures from the Late Iron Age settlement Sorte Muld on Bornholm

Strengthening the museums through partnerships Museums are expected to fulfil a number of responsibilities in respect of safeguarding the heritage, the collections etc. But the museums are at the same time expected to fulfil a role as a local/national and international tourist attraction.

How can we secure the constant (dual) development of our institutions? Can partnerships with other actors in e.g. the tourist industry expand our impact and strengthen the business model

Partnership with private sector in running “The Farm-Bornholms food cultural house” Jacob Bjerring Hansen, Bornholms Museum 5 years ago a big problem with the farm – not enough visitors and too little money. Difficulties for museums to create credibility and respect from politicians. By creating Public-Private Partnerships – politicians got interested. Have to convince the business about the value-chain. All year round activities. The success is partnership and shared responsibility and use. Total cost 1, 5 million Euro; EU-money and private foundation.

Home sweet home Helene Westin, Stockholm City Museum Which are the obstacles for new visitors’ groups and how to overcome them? To arrange a space where all can feel relaxed, feel at home. The project worked with new families arriving in Stockholm from other cultures. They were invited to the museum, but they needed help and even sub-way tickets to get there. The town and systems were too unfamiliar to them, no experience of leaving theit new “comfort zone”. After the museums-visit a visit at their home was made by the

Key-factors for the museum-staff to get accepted : small talk with the adults about housing, children etc. Usually the first contact with Swedish people who were not government officials! The staff was asked: When are you coming back? When are we going to visit the museum again? But the summer holidays occurred. And in Sweden we don’t work then. Hard for the new- comers to understand this custom. And then the supervisor quit the job, the new one was not interested… All faded out… Due to organizational structures it vanished (vacation, new job; project not implied in the organization.

Hard lessons learned – how to build sustainable initiatives within the museums.

Business as unusual - collaboration with the local business Lars Sjösvärd, Gotlands Museum The new childrens’ – exhibition “Skepp & Skoj” was created together with the Gotlandic shipping company Gotlandsbolaget. Not only were they supporting with funding, moreover they supported with knowledge and feed-back.

The Bornholm-Meeting September 2015 16 Museum as a coordinator of the national network of counsellors on traditional building. Elo Lutsepp, Estonian Open Air Museum The Centre of Rural Architecture of the Estonian Open Air Museum has implemented the project “Practical trainings for the owners of rural houses” since 2008. A strong network has been developed within the framework of the project enabling cooperation to preserve rural farm houses. The work resulted in the Europa Nostra-Award in 2015, which is an honour to the museum and also to all cooperation partners, craftsmen, specialists and also the owners of the houses who have allowed the museum to carry out activities in their yards.

Visit and lunch at Bornholm Art Museum The group got a splendid guided tour by the director Lars Kærulf Møller. Bornholm Art Museum building was designed by architects Fogh and Følner A / S. (Lyngby) and covering an area of approximately 4000 m2 spread over 3 levels. It was constructed in 1993 and expanded in 2003.

The architects have integrated the old sanctuary source in the building as a symbol that relates to the art museum. The old sanctuary source was in the Middle Ages known for its healing power. Today it symbolizes the experiences, recreation and spiritual development. The source has its origins in the foyer, right when you enter into the museum. All the way down through the building's granite stairs a small channel The well at the entrance of the art museum. leads the source down and ends in a wishing well in the museum's lower level.

Bornholm Art Museum's permanent collection consists of arts and crafts related to Bornholm. Visual art in the collection range in time from the early 1800s to the present day with the centre of gravity of Bornholm painters - a group of artists who worked on the island in the first half of the 1900s.

Right now a physical co-location of Bornholm Museum and Museum of Bornholm is planned. This creates one in the Danish context unique entity: the vision is not just a single building, but a rethinking of the role of museums as well as joint interdisciplinary communication and joint operations. Therefore, the establishment of an Archaeological Center on Bornholm is planned. The Archaeological Center will provide facilities for the field excavation studies. The network of universities has the ambition to submit archaeological field studies to the island, which will allow field work and thematic excavations in multiple time periods simultaneously, which has not previously been possible.

A new life of Museum of Archaeology and History in Elbląg Grzegorz Stasiełowicz, Elblag Museum The Elblag museum is newly opened the completely restored locations after a water- accident some years ago. But also there are several new exhibitions and concepts, all revitalizing the museum supporting the contacts with society.

The Bornholm-Meeting September 2015 19 Follow the Vikings project at Foteviken Björn M Buttler Jakobsen The objective is to make the transnational Viking heritage accessible and understandable to a world-wide audience. This will contribute to maintaining and developing Europe as the No. 1 Global Heritage Tourism Destination. It will boost local economies and local employment and, through the networking activities, will help knowledge transfer and quality improvement at heritage sites throughout Europe.

The project will create a large and lasting network among cultural actors involved in the preservation, presentation and marketing of Viking heritage throughout Europe and further afield. The project will take advantage of the network already established by the Destination Viking Association and support the extension of this. The project will also support an intensified exchange of knowledge and experience between these actors, as well as supporting the creation of joint transnational presentations and products on Viking legacy.

The project aims to broaden the audience to major and less well-known sites, museums, attractions, etc. relating the Viking story and to the legacy of the Vikings. It also aims to stimulate interest in the Viking world beyond the partnership and the Cultural Route.
