On a steep rocky promontory at the northern tip of Bornholm sits the impressive medieval fortress of Hammershus. It is a perfect destination for the whole family, offering an exciting mix of adventure and history, nature and relaxation in the comfortable visitor’s center powered by green, geothermal energy. The Hammershus Castle Ruins The largest castle ruin in Northern Europe Hammershus is Scandinavia’s largest medieval fortification. It is situated 74 meters above sea level on Hammeren at the northern tip of the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. The site consists of the main castle residence and the imposing Mantel Tower, and is surrounded by a great wall of stone that stretches 750 meters around the castle grounds. Hammershus yesterday Top view of the Hammershus Visitor Center Originally constructed in the early 13th century, it was long believed that the castle was built as a private residence for the Archbishop of Lund. However, recent evidence uncovered at the site suggests that it was constructed as a royal residence for Valdemar II of Denmark and as a base for the Danish crusades. The Hammershus fortress was fought over by various Danish and Swedish kings and changed hands several times throughout its storied history.

It’s about finding the wonder in the things you see and the places you go. One of the wonders, that we at VisitDenmark are particularly proud of, is our nature. Denmark has hundreds of islands, each with their own unique appeal. • Bornholms Middelaldercenter
Når man besøger Bornholms Middelaldercenter, imponeres man over kulturinstitu- tionens høje aktivitetsniveau.

TWO MILLENNIA OF COIN FINDS AND COIN USE – A CASE STUDY OF VESTER HERRED, BORNHOLM Helle W. Horsnæs*, Michael Märcher* & Michael Vennersdorf** Abstract – ﬈e project ‘A stepping stone in the Baltic Sea’ aimed at investigating coin finds from a specific area from two points of view. From a methodological point of view it investigates the potentials and pitfalls in the use of archaeological material deriving from detector surveys undertaken by amateur archaeologists and the integration of these finds, in casu coins, with finds deriving from other types of investigation or from accidental finds. In the interpretative level this is the first diachronic analysis of coin use covering a whole region of Denmark from the first appearance of coins in the archaeological material until the present day [1]. ﬈e paper is divided into three main parts: first an introduction to the material, detector archaeology and Bornholm, followed by the analysis of coins and contexts and conclusions based on the finds, and finally close descriptions of the sites used as main cases.
