Panto Battle

Southam College’s Drama department are never one to do things too traditionally, so take one tradition and turn it on its head and you have the Southam Panto Battle. Initially sounded a crazy idea but some how works. All that was needed was a dedicated group of Year 12 students supporting their peers, countless hours of rehearsals by dedicated cast and lots of audience participation. This was a lovely event in a relaxing cabaret atmosphere where we were treated to some fabulous performances from y7-13 who made this very memorable. Whilst Godiva and Webb Ellis won, it highlighted some very talented performers who were all brave to give it their all.

Girton Colleges Theology, Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies Taster day

Southam College students have had a wonderful day visiting Girton College as part of Cambridge University. Amy, Izzy and Emily were selected from hundreds of students who applied to take part in Girton Colleges Theology, Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies Taster day.

They have experienced talks from various lecturers and also discussed how they can aim to study Theology at university.

Introducing our Heads of House

Mr Adkins - Head of Godiva As a house, Godiva are renowned for being ‘the ones to beat’ and for competing well in all the house competitions and activities, however this year Shakespeare are already in the lead and we need to catch up and over take them. As we look ahead to Southam’s Got Talent, House Sport, Charity Week and Sports Day, we need to keep up our enthusiasm and ensure that we are all working together to reach that end goal of victory over the other houses.

Miss MacLachlan - Head of Shakespeare Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.’ Having been in post as Head of Shakespeare for the last 2 years I have been overwhelmed with student’s effort and generosity to support their house. As last year's champions Shakespeare is going for back to back wins! Currently in the lead, this house has more determination than ever to beat the other three houses. With our continued team work and enthusiasm we will ensure our successes in the upcoming competitions to become the winning house...again!

Miss Pratley - Head of Webb Ellis Being the head of Webb Ellis house for the past 2 years has been incredible. My aim this year is to continue to work with Webb Ellis staff in order to continue to develop a community where students are appreciative, motivated, kind and aspire to be the best they can be. Webb Ellis students have a great reputation for their participation and support at school events and competitions. If we all work together to live up to this reputation, we can have a fantastic year! Come on Webb Ellis!

Mrs Morten- Head of Whittle Whittle has a history of excellent participation and I am so proud of all the students who get involved in the wide range of house activities. It is always so fantastic to see the enthusiasm that Whittle students have when it comes to completing competitions. We have had such a great start to the year, with wins in House Sport and other competitions, let's get back to the top! By working together, we can be the best we can be and get back to our rightful place as the winning house! 6

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! 98 Sports News Year 10 Netball Southam v Bloxham 6th February - A tough opposition this evening, Southam however, started off extremely strong. Amazing shooting from E.Cumberbatch, with some excellent work bringing the ball up the court from I.Fairhurst, S.Costa and B.Crump. K.Black had an outstanding first half at GD/GK, this was the best I’d seen her play - brilliant marking of the attack and intercepting the ball regularly! S.Costa read the game well and consistently pressured the C of Bloxham, forcing errors from the opposition. A.Lyle came on and continued the shooting success from quarter 1 as Southam looked to be in control of the game. O.Constable and R.Hill pressured the attack with C.Furey jumping to outstanding heights as WD to block feeds into the circle. C.Wain had some lovely movements in the circle as she teamed up with A.Lyle and E.Cumberbatch. As third quarter hit, Southam began to tire and Bloxham started to show more consistent play. Unfortunately for the girls, we gave away possession with simple mistakes and Bloxham used this to capitalise their goal difference. A tough match with lots of positives and a few things to improve. Final score 28-17. Well done to the whole team, looking forward to representing Southam at the County Tournament at the end of Feb! Miss MacLachlan

Year 10 Football Southam Cruise to a comfortable win over 6th February - The Yr 10 football team produced an impressive display over an under-strength Kineton team yesterday. With both teams down to 10 players, there was lots of space on the pitch, and we were able to exploit it as earlier as the first minute when Lennon C. broke through the Kineton defence to finish low into the bottom corner. This set the tone for the game, and although Kineton did manage to mount a few attacks and force some saves from Callum V in goal, they were always comfortable. Southam were 4-0 up at the break with a further 2 from Lennon and a Corbin M. debut goal. Southam took a little longer to establish control in the 2nd half, failing to get the ball down on the deck under control, but once their passing game was back, the goals quickly followed. Joe W. added a brace of well taken goals and Lennon C. completed his rout with 6 individual goals. Mr MacGibbon Year 8 Football 12th February -Year 8 Football Work rate wins out as cup run continues After an impressive 5-2 win against Kineton in the league the year 8 team looked to keep form going in the cup against . On a large home pitch Southam started brightly and played to the width winning early corners. However, Alcester sucked up the early pressure and began to play the ball with more confidence. James P and Callum S broke play up well and timely challenges from Cameron B. shut the door. Ben D. also made a good save to keep them out. Southam began to play on the break a little more feeding Paul H. and Oli H. down the middle as well as wide on the wings. A Southam corner from Sam H. saw the ball evade everyone resulting in a strong tackle from Jake H. and the ball bundled into the net. 1 -0 Southam at half time. The second half saw much of the same with Alcester playing the ball well with not much in the way off outcome. Southam grew in confidence and started to thread balls through. Cameron M. showed strength out wide. If we could have switched the ball from left to right we could have got more gain. Oscar W has to be noted for the champagne moment with a lovely run from right back cutting in to give the ball into the path of Oli H. on the edge of the box who tucked the ball away with a neat calm strike to the left corner. With 10 minutes to go Southam then played the best football of the match, linking at communicating with each other and could have scored another. The score line would have been a little unfair on Alcester who did work hard. However, Southam’s sheer work rate at breaking up play, movement off the ball towards the end and more clinical finishing meant a deserved win. Man of the Match was James P. in midfield who worked like a trojan through out the game. Final score Southam 2 Alcester Academy 0. Schools Cross Country Championships, Moreton Morrell 21st January - A massive congratulations to our hardy runners who represented the school at the Warwickshire Schools Cross-Country Championships. The weather was a little damp and cold, but our runners battled on, producing some excellent results and many will now go on to represent at the English Schools Championships in Leeds and Prestwold Hall. Performance of the day came from Madeleine Jacks (Yr 8), who tore away from the field on the second lap to win comfortably. Madeleine was running against Yr 9 students and still has another year in this year group, making her win all the more impressive! Elspeth Unitt suffered a fall during the race, but recovered well to finish 14th, and Poppy Lister (22nd) and Mae Quinney (31st) completed the Southam Junior Girls team. Other runners to gain selection for the Warwickshire teams were: Oliver Wetherall – 6th in the Minor Boys (Yr7), Emily and Ana Lovett finished 5th & 6th respectively in the Inter Girls (Yr10/11), & Georgina Hurt was 8th in the Senior Girls (Yr 12/13). We also had a number of runners finishing just outside the top 8, who will be reserves for the Warwickshire Teams. Our other runners, who all competed fantastically were: Zoe Sayer (13th), Scarlett Sanders (20th) & Elsie Palmer-Boyd (34th) in the Minor Girls, James Eatough (16th) in the Minor Boys, Sam Hobbs (28th) in the Junior Boys, Rositsa Gugutkova (10th) in the Inter Girls, and Sam Lambert (13th) in the Inter Boys.
