CHAPEL ROYAL HAMPTON COURT

SERVICES FOR MARCH AND APRIL 2019

WELCOME

WELCOME to Her Majesty’s , for this service, and to a continuous tradition of worship that has been practised on this site for at least 800 years. This is one of the Queen’s Chapels, and as such, not a parish church.

The original chapel was founded by the Knights Hospitaller long before Cardinal Wolsey began rebuilding it in 1528. The fine vaulted ceiling, dating from 1535, was the major addition by Henry VIII. Most of the chapel furnishings date from the late 17th and early 18th century and were designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The organ (although much altered and re-built) essentially dates back to 1711 and retains not only its fine case but much original pipework.

The Chapel Royal was not originally a building but a body of priests and singers that traditionally accompanied the monarch wherever he or she went. Only later did the buildings this body used become known by that name. Today, as well as Hampton Court, there are Chapels Royal at The , The Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy, and St James’s Palace, which is the headquarters of the Chapel Royal. Services in all of Her Majesty’s Chapels are based on those from the 1662 , and you will have been handed an Order of Service with this booklet.

The Chapel Royal has an unrivalled continued tradition of choral music. Many of the greatest English have worked and composed pieces in and for this place, Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons, and Purcell among them. It is, therefore, wholly appropriate that worship is enhanced by music, which now may come from the English or European choral traditions. The texts are sung in their original language, usually English or Latin.

This booklet contains the details of that music, as well as the and lessons for each choral service. These are correct at the time of publication. The hymns can found in the green New English Hymnal. In a tradition begun at the start of the Great War, we always end by singing the National , asking God to send his blessings upon the Queen.

Litany to the Holy Spirit Ben Ponniah (b. 1984)

In the hour of my distress, When temptations me oppress, And when I my sins confess, Sweet Spirit, comfort me!

When I lie within my bed, Sick in heart, and sick in head, And with doubts discomforted, Sweet Spirit, comfort me!

When the house doth sigh and weep, And the world is drowned in sleep, Yet mine eyes the watch do keep, Sweet Spirit, comfort me!

Where thou reignest Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Where Thou reignest, King of Glory, Throned in everlasting light, In Thy courts no more is needed Sun by day nor moon by night.

Soon may we those portals enter, When this earthly strife is o’er, There to reign with Saints and angels, In Thy presence evermore.

Praise to God, th’eternal Father, Praise to God, th’eternal Son, Praise to God, th’eternal Spirit, One in Three and Three in One.

Honour, praise, thanksgiving, blessing, Now and evermore be done; God most Holy, we adore Thee, Ever blessed Trinity.

Morning Prayers Philip Moore (b. 1943)

O God, early in the morning do I cry unto thee, help me to pray, and to think only of thee. I cannot pray alone. In me there is darkness, But with Thee there is light. I am lonely, but Thou leavest me not. I am feeble in heart, but Thou leavest me not. I am restless, but with Thee there is peace. In me there is bitterness, but with Thee there is patience. Thy ways are past understanding, but Thou knowest the way for me.

O heav'nly Father I praise and thank Thee for the peace of the night. I praise and thank Thee for this new day. I praise and thank Thee for all Thy goodness and faithfulness throughout my life. Thou hast granted me many blessings: now let me accept tribulation from Thy hand. Thou will not lay on me more than I can bear. Thou makest all things work together for good for Thy children. Lord Jesus Christ Thou wast poor and in misery, A captive and forsaken, as I am. Thou knowest all man's distress; Thou abidest with me when all others have deserted me; Thou dost not forget me but seekest me. Thou willest that I should know Thee and turn to Thee.

Lord I hear Thy call and follow Thee; Do Thou help me. Chiefly do I remember all my loved ones, my fellow prisoners and all who in this house perform their hard service. Lord have mercy, restore me to liberty, and enable me so to live now that I may answer before Thee and before the world. Lord, whatever this day may bring, Thy name be praised.

[Three prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer]

Lord, let me know mine end Maurice Greene (1696-1755)

Lord, let me know mine end, and the number of my days: that I may be certified how long I have to live.

Behold, thou hast made my days, as it were a span long: and mine age is ev’n as nothing in respect of thee; and verily ev’ry man living is altogether vanity.

For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them.

And now, Lord, what is my hope? truly my hope is ev’n in thee. Hear my prayer, O Lord, and with thine ears, consider my calling.

Hold not thy peace at my tears. O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength, before I go hence, and be no more seen. 13

Vitam praesta puram, Keep our life all spotless, Iter para tutum: Make our way secure Ut videntes lesum Till we find in Jesus, Semper collaetemur. Joy for evermore.

Sit laus Deo Patri, Praise to God the Father, Summon Christo decus, Honor to the Son, Spiritui Sancto, In the Holy Spirit, Tribus honor unus. Amen. Be the glory one. Amen.

15

As truly as God is our Father William Mathias (1934 - 1992)

As truly as God is our Father, so just as truly is he our Mother. In our Father, God Almighty, we have our being; in our merciful Mother we are remade and restored.

Our fragmented lives are knit together. And by giving and yielding ourselves, through grace, to the Holy Spirit we are made whole.

It is I, the strength and goodness of Fatherhood. It is I, the wisdom of Motherhood. It is I, the light and grace of holy love. It is I, the Trinity, it is I, the unity.

I am the sovereign goodness in all things. It is I who teach you to love. It is I who teach you to desire. It is I who am the reward of all true desiring.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well. Amen.

Let my complaint (1557-1602)

Let my complaint come before thee, O Lord, Give me understanding according to thy word. Let my supplication come before thee, Deliver me according to thy word. My lips shall speak of thy praise When thou hast taught me thy statutes. Yea, my tongue shall sing of thy word, For all thy commandments are righteous. Let thine hand help me; For I have chosen thy commandments. I have longed for thy saving health, O Lord, And in thy law is my delight. O let my soul live, and it shall praise thee, And thy judgements shall help me. I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost; O seek thy servant, for I do not forget thy commandments.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Give ear to my words Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656)

Give ear to my words, O Lord : consider my meditation, O Lord, my God. Hearken unto my voice, to the voice of my cry, my King and my God : for unto thee do I make my prayer.

Vexilla Regis

Vexilla Regis prodeunt: The royal banners forward go: Fulget Crucis mysterium, The Cross shines forth in mystic glow, Quo carne carnis Conditor Where he in flesh, our flesh who made, Suspensus est patibulo. Our sentence bore, our ransom paid.

Impleta sunt quae concinit Amidst the nations, God, saith he, David fidelis carmine, Hath reigned and triumphed from the tree. Dicendo nationibus Fulfilled is all that David told Regnavit a ligno Deus. In true prophetic song of old.

Te summa Deus Trinitas To thee, eternal Three in One, Collaudet omnis spiritus: Let homage meet by all be done: Quos per Crucis mysterium Whom by the Cross thou dost restore, Salva, rege per sæcula. Amen. Preserve and govern evermore. Amen.

[Venantius Fortunatus 530-609, Bishop of Poitiers; translation by John Mason Neale 1818-1866]

Hosanna to the Son of David (1576-1623)

Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest heavens, Thou that sittest in the highest heavens. Hosanna in excelsis Deo.

Pueri Hebræorum Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611)

Pueri Hebræorum vestimenta, The children of the Hebrews threw prosternebant in via, their garments into the road, et clamabant dicentes, And cried out, saying, Hosanna filio David: Hosanna to the Son of David: Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord

Drop, drop slow tears (1583-1625)

Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet, Which brought from Heav’n the news and Prince of Peace.

Cease not, wet eyes, his mercies to entreat; To cry for vengeance, sin doth never cease.

In your deep floods, drown all my faults and fears; Nor let His eye see sin, but through my tears.

22

Venite, comedite William Byrd (1538-1623

Venite comedite panem meum, et bibite vinum quod miscui vobis.

Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine which I have mixed for you.

Salvator mundi (1649-1708)

Salvator mundi salva nos, Qui per crucem et sanguinem redemisti nos: Auxiliare nobis, Te deprecamur Deus noster.

O Saviour of the world, who by Thy cross and precious blood hast redeemed us: save us and help us, we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord.

Solus ad victimam Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988)

Alone to sacrifice thou goest, Lord, giving thyself to Death whom thou hast slain. For us thy wretched folk is any word? Who know that for our sins this is thy pain? For they are ours, O Lord, our deeds, our deeds. Why must thou suffer torture for our sin? Let our hearts suffer in thy Passion, Lord, that very suffering may thy mercy win. This is the night of tears, the three days’ space, sorrow abiding of the eventide, Until the day break with the risen Christ, and hearts that sorrowed shall be satisfied. So may our hearts share in thine anguish, Lord, that they may sharers of thy glory be; Heavy with weeping may the three days pass, to win the laughter of thine Day.

23

Crucifixus Antonio Lotti (1667-1740)

Crucifixus etiam pro nobis sub Pontio Pilato: passus et sepultus est.

He was crucified even for us under Pontius Pilate: he suffered and was buried.

[The ‘Credo’]

God so loved the world (1840-1901)

God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoso believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; But that the world through Him might be saved.

Praise him with trumpets Judith Weir (b. 1954)

For as long as I live, I will praise the Lord; I will sing psalms to my God all my life long. Put no faith in princes, in any man who has no power to save. He breathes his last breath, he returns to the dust: Praise him with fanfares on the trumpet The Lord feeds the hungry and sets the prisoner free. The Lord loves the righteous and watches over the stranger; Praise him with fanfares on the trumpet, Praise him with tambourines and dancing, Praise him in the vault of heaven, the vault of his power; Praise him with the clash of cymbals; The Lord shall reign for ever.

Ye choirs of new Jerusalem Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924)

Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, Your sweetest notes employ, The Pascal victory to hymn, In strains of holy joy.

For Judah’s Lion bursts His chains, Crushing the serpent’s head; And cries aloud through death’s domains To wake th’imprison'd dead.

Devouring depths of hell Their prey at His command restore; His ransom’d hosts pursue their way Where Jesus goes before.

Triumphant in His glory now To Him all pow’r is giv’n; To Him in one communion bow All saints in earth and heaven.

While we His soldiers praise our King, His mercy we implore, Within His palace bright to bring And keep us evermore.

Be ye sure that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves: we are his children and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. Magdalen, cease from sobs and sighs Arr. Peter Hurford (b. 1930)

Magdalen, cease from sobs and sighs; Wipe the teardrops from off thine eyes: Simon the leper’s feast is o’er; Christ today needs thy nard no more. Now thousand times mays’t thou rejoice; Now thousand times uplift thy voice. Alleluia.

Magdalen, bind up on thee now Garland of gladness o’er thy brow: Banish’d afar is grief and pain: Welcome is sunshine after rain. For Jesu Christ the world hath freed, Triumphing over Death indeed. Alleluia.

Blessed be the God and Father Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed at the last time. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. Love one another with a pure heart fervently. See that ye love one another. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away. But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. Amen.
