Evensong 12 July 2018 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the Seventh Week after • 12 July 2018 • 5:15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In this form, it was created by , in the 16th century, as part of the simplification of services within the newly-reformed of . The Episcopal Church, as part of the worldwide , has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on the business of the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God’s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you.

Evening Service in G Choir My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. – Luke 1: 45–55 Luke 10:1-11,16-20 The people sit. The Apostles’ The people stand. Sung by all on a monotone. All I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
